I mean, I grew up in Belhar for a long time. I have seen a lot of bad things happen around me. It would be nice to chan- ge the community somehow,” Graham told TygerBurger on Friday. We caught up with him and fellow Top three contestants Buhle Madlala and Sivu Xabanisa before they took to the stage at the TygerValley shopping centre for the Valley of the Stars concert. Graham, who shares a name with his fa- ther and has two elder brothers, is deeply grounded. “I was fortunate enough to grow up in a household that, regardless of what was going on around us, had a lot of love,” he says. “My father and mother taught us correc- tly. But regard- less of the situation, parents need to play their role.” Graham said children also needed to “step up”, especially if they are not fortunate enough to have parents. “I know, it’s easier said than done, but it’s all up to what they do with their education.” He wants to give youngsters hope. “The main thing is that if you have the right attitude and mindset, you can overco- me any situation you’re in. “You just need to start from within, to make a decision to uplift your life. Graham started his new job when he got back from the island, and is planning on marrying long term girlfriend Erin Arendse after he was proclaimed winner on Sunday. He says the experience has changed him, but he remains with his feet planted firmly on terra firma. “I think people recognise me now to take a picture,” he said, but added that until Fri- day, there had been no fan fun yet. All that may change after Sunday’s announcement, though. But it won’t change him. “I just feel like a normal guy.” Fellow top three contestants Buhle and Si- vu say they also learnt a lot from the 28-day island experience. “I learnt so much more about me, things that, one, I took for granted, or two, didn’t really acknowledge, or three, never really knew existed,” said Buhle. At Delft Academy Football Club soccer ismore than a game, it’s making a differenceto the relationship between parents.Brent Fisher is one of the fathers taking

the time to be at the Voorbrug Sports Fieldin Delft every Saturday and the biggest re-ward is his son’s love.He explained that he is a recovering drug

addict who is now converted but was stillstruggling to get acceptance and love fromhis son.“Up to a few months ago he still hated

me,” says Fisher.“I was looking for a way to get through

to him that I wanted to make up for the losttime that I had not been a proper father andknew that sport, especially soccer, could beone of the ways.”He discovered that the Delft Academy

club was going through tough times withchildren leaving the club and fewer mem-bers joining up.“What impressed me was that even

through tough times coach Harold Philan-

der andwifeVicky stillmanaged tokeep theteams together and the community notifiedwhen and where games took place.“I saw the potential the children had on

the soccer pitch and knew I wanted to bepart of it to help childrenmake the right de-cisions and avoid the peer pressure of get-ting into drugs and gangsterism.”Fisher enrolled his son in the team and

that is when their relationship startedchanging for the better.“He has experienced that I am now here

to support himand it ismaking a huge diffe-rence. It made me think of how much morefathers there are who are not there for theirchildren.“I started approaching fathers I knowand

encouraged them to start being a part of thedifference in their children’s lives, and theclub is growing again.“Myplea is that all parentsmust takenote

of how our children need us to guide theminto a positive future.“Its not just about money, its about ma-

king time to let them know how much youcare.Wemust invest this time in their livesto keep them off the street,” says Fisher.

A plan to foster the fightagainst crime and gang-sterism is in full swing asthe City of Cape Town’sMetro Police Departmentis gaining ground in its ef-forts to prevent crime. The department has, in

recent years, expanded itsstrategy to curb gangste-rismanddrug abuse by in-corporating a number ofsocial crime preventioninitiatives aimed at theyouth. In the most recent initi-

ative, 160 learners fromfour primary schools inElsies River participatedin a three-week child safe-ty project, amid concernsfrom the communityabout a lack of after-school activities and theimpact of anti-social beha-viour on the children.Metro Police, with the

assistance of the Cape He-art Theatre Company, spent three weeks atthe Uitsig, Tygersig, Holy Trinity and ClarkPrimary schools, putting together producti-ons focusing on different themes like bully-ing, peer pressure and gangsterism. Thehighlight was when learners performed theplays at a special event in Cravenby on Sa-turday 17 May 2014.“The idea was to keep the learners occu-

pied in ameaningfulway, but also to addressthe very real issues that they face in theircommunities on a daily basis,” said the ci-ty’s mayoral committee member for safetyand security, JP Smith.“In fact, the themes dealt with during this

project are crucial to the social crime pre-vention narrative that the Metro Police De-partment has woven into its interactionswith young people.”The department is also wrapping up a se-

ries of Youth Academy camps that have as-sisted youth at risk between the ages of 13and 16 from schools across Cape Town, inconjunctionwith theWestern Cape educati-on department. The Youth Academy waslaunched in 2013 and to date, more than 300learners have already attended 11 camps atthe Rotary Club in Simons Town in this fi-nancial year and the department will haveexceeded 500 attendees by the end of June,at a total cost of just over R1,4 million. This includes accommodation, food,

transport, entertainers, sleeping bags, toi-letries and staff costs. This past weekend 25learners from the Bishop Lavis School ofSkills and 25 learners fromWest Cliff Schoolof Skills in Bellville attended the weekend-long camp.“We cannot underestimate the importan-

ce of these initiatives in the overall fight

against substance abuseand gangsterism,” conti-nued Smith.“Positive reinforce-

ment, options and exposu-re to opportunities outs-ide their everyday reali-ties can act as a powerfulcatalyst for young peoplewho want to plot a diffe-rent path for themselves.“These initiatives also

underscore our commit-ment to law enforcement, but also addressing theroot causes of crime aspart of the Mayor’s Gang,Youth Violence and DrugPrevention Campaign, which includes numerousinterventions and pro-grammes by almost everydirectorate in the city.“Every young person

needs to undergo a rite ofpassage into adulthoodand as society we are fai-ling to offer that option for

school-leaving youth who find themselvesunemployed after school and end up loite-ring on street corners until the gangs wooand recruit them with promises of prospe-rity and a sense of identity and belonging.“Metro Police will play its role in hel-

ping offer an alternative rite of passagethat involves joining a different “family”when they join us on these camps, the fol-low-up activities through ourMetro PoliceNeighbourhood Safety Officers thereafterand ultimately when they join the MetroPolice Cadets.”Another major focus area is awareness

campaigns in schools and communities.Between January 2012 and mid-May 2014,the department conducted 56 search opera-tions at schools across the Cape Town me-tropole as well as 115 drug awarenessshows with the K9 Unit.

which was made, but to their dismay whenthey arrived at the destination at Easter theywere confronted by the real owner who hadnevermade his property available for holidayaccommodation.Anyone who has experienced similar pro-

Holiday nightmare

Drag racers. A cop party dropping in. Ahigh-speed chase. Five arrests. This was the high-adrenaline stuff of

an integrated police and traffic operationwhen they disrupted an illegal drag raceon Robert Sobukwe Road near the Uni-versity of the Western Cape last Sunday.During the blitz operation four arrests

were made, but a fifth suspect first tookofficers on an unwanted tour of the hig-hwayat breakneck speed, said city trafficservices spokespersonRichardColeman.“Officers arrested five suspects for

reckless and negligent driving but onedriver sped off, leading officers on ahigh-speed chase along theN1 incoming,” saidColeman. The drag-racer rammed one of the

Ghost Squad vehicles during the pursuitand ran into a Jeep on Vanguard Drive, causing injuries to both the officers andthe SUV’s driver, he said.Police eventually caught the offender

in Thornton. He faces charges of attempted murder,

fleeing the scene of an accident and reck-less and negligent driving.“If only the driver had adhered to the

instructions of our officers in the firstplace, the charge sheet would have readvery differently, but he insisted on put-ting his own life and the lives of other ro-ad users at risk because of sheer stupidi-ty.“I hope the courts throw the book at

him,” said Coleman.

Housebreaking cases which are toooften withdrawn are becoming in-creasingly problematic.

The police in Kleinvlei told TygerBur-ger this week that this seems to be a gro-wing trend.

The reason for the withdrawal of thesecases, as cited by this police station, isbecause in most of these cases the inci-dent is familyy related.

“Most of the cases in the (Eersterivier)area are property related, that is theft ofmotor vehicle, theft out of motor vehicleand housebreaking.

“It originates out of the fact that thereis a lot of drug abuse amongst the yo-ungsters in the community.

“To address this problem has becomea challenge,” Detective Constable Maka-ziwe Tshologwana, member of the Klein-vlei Detectives Services, said recently.

The problem of drug abuse across theMetropole is commonplace.

Family mattersHe said that when their station does

arrest suspects in these cases, they oftendiscover that it’s a family related matterand the mothers often do not want theirchildren to be prosecuted afterwards.

There seems to be a reason behind thisbehaviour. Tshologwana explains.

“They wait for us to recover their pro-perty before they come to the station towithdraw the case.

“If we do not withdraw it here we haveno choice but to send the case to courtwhere they can also withdraw the mat-ter,” he said.

He said the police secures a lot of ar-

rests relating to housebreaking and theftout of motor vehicles.

Another problem detectives in thearea face, according to Tshologwana, isthe increase of robberies along OldFaure Road.

‘Prostitutes help’“There are a lot of robbery cases being

reported from that area.“People are being robbed of their cell-

phones and valuable property.“The suspects’ modus operandi is to

use prostitutes to help commit these rob-beries,” he said.

According to Tshologwana, prostitu-tes lure potential clients into dark areaswhere they are then attacked by the rob-bers.

“We as the Kleinvlei detectives had tocome up with a strategy, and that strate-gy is to get a patrol vehicle in the areato patrol early morning and at night.”

Crime free areaIn February last year the police arre-

sted 12 suspects in connection with rob-beries in this area.

“There were no more robberies repor-ted after that for some time. It was quietfor nearly a year and the area was decla-red a crime free area,” Tshologwanasaid.

According to him some of the victimsin the past were also murdered.

“The suspects we arrested then hadwarrants of arrest against them and wealso linked them to other cases that werecommitted before,” Tshologwana said.TygerBurger recently reported on ca-

ses of robbery along Old Faure Road inwhich police officers themselves fell vic-tim to this crime.

If you’re in the habit of roeming, or havingthe luck of vyf innise and sturk then you’rea fan of the traditional card game Klaverjas. For many it may be a parlour pastime pla-

yed in many homes across the Cape Flats, but for some it is serious activity. At the recent South African Klawerjas Bo-

ard of Control (SAKBOC) Inter-union tour-nament held at the Belhar Indoor Sport Cen-tre at the beginning of May, it was all busi-ness as teams from the Mitchells Plain

Klaverjas Union took on all-comers to emer-ge as victors.Omar Benjamin, chairman of the MPKU,

said that the union was very proud of theachievements of the teams from their union.“Our A-team, captained by ‘Mr. Cool’,

Adiel Boltman, annexed the double (Leagueand Knock-out Trophies) in the A divisionof the tournament,” he said excitedly.“This was followed by the ‘B’ team captai-

ned by Noor Abrahams who annexed therunners-up as well as the Knock-out Tro-phies in the B-division of the tournament.”He further explained that this sport is a

mind-game played in two halves of one hourand 15mins with a 10 minute break in whichyou have to outsmart your opponents by be-ing fully focused.“Consistency in your game play and most

importantly, eliminating mistakes withcounting, and other factorswhichwas achie-ved by the MPKU teams.”This tournament is an annual competition

which consists of eight unions from as farafield as the West Coast, Uitenhage and PortElizabeth aswell as unions from theWesternCape comprising Southern Suburbs, SouthPeninsula and False Bay.MPKU not only took all the important tro-

phies to crown it all, one of the icons of Kla-werjas, Neville Solomon, who is a memberof the triumphant MPKU ‘A’ team, was una-nimously voted by the eight unions as theSportsperson of the tournament.Solomon has actively played this game for

more than 35 years and has been a Inter-Uni-on team member since the inauguration ofSAKBOC.“He is a well deserved recipient of this

prestige award,” said Benjamin. The next competition is the Champs of

Champs which will be contested by all theleague winners from the various unions affi-liated to SAKBOC andwill be contested from6 to 8 November at the Belhar Indoor SportCentre.Benjamin also pointed out that the sport

is still very popular and growing.“This game has always been popular with

students here on the Cape Flats so we wouldlike to see younger players forming clubs, orjoining up with clubs in their communities.“While there is the serious side of it there’s

always an element of fun when families gettogether to play, and you’re never to old tolearn,” he says.

The Cloete street taxi rank borderingParow Station is a constant headachefor theCity council andcommuters ali-

ke.Close to 40 000 commuters who move

through this area per day are exposed to thehigh incidence of criminality and the viola-tion of by-laws here.Subcouncil 4 chairperson Clive Justus is

now turningup theheat for different partiesto adopt a “soft boundary” approach andwork together to sort this area out.At a recent CPF meeting, feedback from

Warrant Officer Jacques Voigt, the mana-ger of sector policing in sector 3, painteda picture of policing success here.Voigt said there is an emphasis on “block

approach” in the Parow CBD and with thatin mind, there has been a clamp down onpetty crimes, specifically in the station andtaxi rank areas. He said this approach is tar-geted at crimes such as public drunkenness, loitering, the selling of counterfeit mer-chandise and the breaking of other by-laws.But Justus is calling for more intensive

action from the Parow police to help put thesituation at the taxi rank in order. “Their

mandate is to offer safety to all residents ofSouth Africa. It cannot be expected that thecity’s law enforcement manages to crackdown on all the drug sales, distribution ofcounterfeitmerchandise, possession of dan-gerous weapons and other criminal activi-ties here,” he said.He has also called on the city to release

ten more rent-a-cops for the subcouncil 4area tohelpwith the enforcement of by-lawshere.In a letter to the City of Cape Town’s regi-

onal operationsmanager, Justus demandedimmediate action against vagrants unlaw-fully occupying an empty building, and themismanagement of litter.“Litter from the area ismerely swept into

the roadway for the area cleaning team tosweep up.“This is double handling of litter. The cle-

aning team on the station must dispose ofall litter on site and not allow it to be trans-ferred into the public area,” he said.According to Justus, the response was a

promise to immediate “remedial action”.He said part of the problem in the area

was that the Parow police station employsa new station manager on average everythree months, the result being that there isno consistent plan.

Ek was my lewe lank ’nbestuurder, maar nie een plekskakel my vir ’n onderhoudnie. Sê ons grondwet dan niedat almal gelyk behandel moetword nie? Gaan dit nie oorgelyke regte vir almal nie?Waar gaan klop ek aan vir

hulp in Suid-Afrika as almalhul rûe draai? Ek het ’n vrouen kinders wat swaar op mysteun, maar op wie kan eksteun?

Het almal dannie gelyke regte?

Ek wil graag my waarderinguitspreek aan TygerBurger virjul digitale weergawe. Dit isvir my baie belangrik om dieplaaslike nuus te kan lees enop hoogte van sake in mykontrei te bly, omdat ek niealtyd tuis is nie.Ek werk in Mosambiek en is

weinig tuis. Dit is dus vir mylekker om hier ingelig te bly.Deur middel van TygerBurgerkan ’n mens lees wat tuis en inaanliggende gebiede gebeur.Dis soms hartseer om te lees

Koerant hou hom indie vreemde ingelig

van die aantal roof- en moord-gevalle en sinlose geweld.Die geval in Bishop Lavis,

waar die oorhoofse projektorgesteel was, is skokkend(“Thieves now attend church toget to assets’”, TygerBurger, 7Mei). Ek het self daar kerk toegegaan.Soveel mense vind baat by die

manier waarop die projektoringespan word om kerkdiensteen die boodskap Sondae oor tebring. Watter barbare doensoveel moeite om daardie onregteenoor mense te doen?Nogmaals baie dankie vir die

I’ve been a resident of Black-heath for more than 30 years. Iuse public transport to getaround, but I feel unsafe lately. There is currently a problem

with taxi drivers, believed to befrom Macassar, taking over thearea. They have no respect forresidents. They have created a rank on

an open field adjacent to someresidents’ homes, they urinatein public and talk really loudlyfrom 04:30. Some of the resi-dents have approached them, but have been accused ofracism. We raised our concerns with

the Blackheath Malibu TaxiAssociation chairperson, but hesaid they had laid complaintswith the provincial trafficdepartment. Apparently two ofthe association’s former drivershave broken away from theorganisation and recruited thenew drivers. They have thedepartment’s support. We can no longer take any

taxi as these drivers dragcommuters from taxis, forcing

them to drive with them.Who can we contact to stop

the violence in our once quietcommunity? It was always so safe to catch

a taxi in Blackheath – but notany more.

Join the driveto provideblanketsWith winter fast approaching, one cannothelp but spare a thought for the people –and animals – left to brave the gruellingelements. It was a simple thought like this that

saw the birth of South Africa’s annualTwitter Blanket Drive (#TBD2014).Based on the premise that if every

South African on Twitter donated oneblanket, there would be far less peoplefighting the cold, a simple tweet started anational initiative. Now, every year a group of volunteers

collect blankets which are then donatedto organisations that redistribute them tothose in need.TygerBurger has joined the initiative

and will be acting as a “drop-off” pointuntil the end of the drive on Wednesday28 May.With the icy temperatures and rainy

autumn we’ve had, there’s no telling howcold this year’s winter might get. A warmblanket could make a world of differenceto someone who doesn’t have much else.On the subject of blankets, polar fleece

blankets are preferred, as they are moredurable and dry quicker in wet condi-tions, but any donations are welcome.Blankets collected this year will be

officially handed over at the Protea Fireand Ice hotel in the CBD on Thursday 29May and everyone is welcome to attend, provided you bring a blanket of course.More information about the blanket

drive and how to help spread somewarmth this winter is available onwww.tygerburger.co.za.

Years of hard work paid off for GrandWestCSI bursary fund recipients when they we-re honoured at a gala dinner.

The 34 recipients come from all over theprovince and completed studies in thefields of mathematics, technology and sci-ence at seven tertiary institutions in CapeTown.

The recipients include Shaakira Afrika,Kim Cloete and Ashley Botha from BishopLavis, Shehan Classen from Ravensmead,Tazna Peters from Belhar and Kurt Tem-mers from Bonteheuwel.

A total of R9m in bursaries has been han-ded over since 2007 when the youngsterswere selected as worthy recipients of theinaugural GrandWest CSI tertiary BursaryFund.

According to a statement, they have sin-ce excelled. In recognition of their achieve-ments, theywere invited to attend a specialcelebratory dinner atGrandWest onThurs-day 15 May.

At inception, the GrandWest CSI Burs-aryFundpledgedR5mover a five-year peri-od, but an additional R4m has been contri-buted toward the tertiary education of over700 financially needy students.

There are no expectations of work frombursary students on completion of theirstudies, nor do they need to repay theirbursary. The only expectation is that thestudents participate in 40 hours of volun-teer work at a community project in theirarea of residencewhich, it is hoped, will in-stil an ethos of selflessness in students.

“We are delighted by the success of ourstudents and hope they will go on to usetheir education wisely, to enrich not onlytheir own lives, but also those of everyonearound them,” saidGrandWest generalma-nager Mervyn Naidoo.

“For many of the students, they are thefirst in their family, or even their commu-nity to graduate. They have the ability butthe sad reality is that without financial as-sistance they would not have been able topursue their studies.Wehave received a lotof positive feedback from various universi-ties,whichwearedelightedby, but ourulti-mate objective is to equip our studentswiththe knowledge and means to create satisfy-ing and fulfilling careers for themselves.”

@lounotesSuriNet Creations are calling for entriesfor this year’s Making of a Star singingcompetition.

The first competition tookplace last yearwith the focus on a special prize for the ori-ginal song category.

Petra Mans, who won the category lastyear, walked away with a music video re-cording worth R5000, a photo shoot worthR1500 and a makeover.

“I’m also a singer/songwriter, and Iknow that it’s not very easy to make it inthe music industry, you need to have aplatform,” says Sumare Koegelenbergfrom SuriNet.

Her mother, Sorita van Schalkwyk, theowner of SuriNet, had wanted to run amu-sic competition for about four years beforethey started the Making of a Star concept, but they knew they would need somethingdifferent to competewith all the other com-

petitions available. With this competition they focus on ori-

ginal material, giving big main prizes tothewinners, allowing them to use the com-petition as a springboard for the competiti-on.Petra performed on the Cape Town An-gels benefit stage at Taste of Cape Townthis year andher firstmusic video for “MyInvincibleHeart” the song shewon theMa-king of a Star competition with, will be re-leased soon.

While this year’s prizes haven’t been fi-nalised, Sumare says they are hoping to gobigger. They are also throwing their net alittle wider this year, by hosting prelimi-nary rounds at theWeskusMall inVreden-burg.

Categories for this year’s competition in-clude Afrikaans, English, duets, trios, gos-pel, country, sound and look alike, originalmaterial and classical/musical, a new ca-tegory.

While the senior category last year wasopen for people 18 years and older, it now

includes singers from the age of 14. Child-ren as young as six can enter the juniorssection of the competition.

Northern Suburbs preliminary roundsfor this year’s competitions start on 26 Julyat Van Riebeeck Hall in Kuils River. En-tries cost R50 per person or R40 per personfor duets and groups, but participants arewelcome to enter as many categories asthey’d like.

The junior finals will be hosted at Speci-al Memories in Brackenfell on Friday 5September with Desmond Wells as theguest artist and MC for the evening.
