Sisterhood wantsto change worldGARY VAN DYK

Watch out for a sisterhood that wants tochange the world for disadvantaged youth.

Society Sistas, headed by Chevon Samu-els and Paula Faria, is an organisation ofyoung people getting together to make a ma-jor difference in the lives of young peopleat risk.

Samuels explained that a chance meetingof the two of them as adults made them real-ise that although, as children, they grew upin different “societies” they shared a pas-sion to help those less fortunate.

“We realised that there were so manyyoung people out there, from different com-munities, who have dreams that could bedestroyed by circumstance,” she said.

“We know there are many like us hopingand praying for a chance to make someone’slife much brighter and happier by havinga profound impact on them to make somesort of change in those that are less fortu-nate. That is why we started working to-gether to make that change happen.”

When these two friends identified theirpassion for reaching out they put that pas-sion into action by forming the group tomake that difference for those at risk in pov-erty, abuse and hunger.

For some time now they both accom-plished extensive work in different commu-nities with the help of friends who sharetheir passion in those communities.

Their current projects consist of commu-nity outreach in Mfuleni, Atlantis, Philippifarm households, Eureka Estate, localchurches, creches and senior citizenprojects.

“While many of our project involve longterm plans, there are immediate actionsthat we do to make a difference in the livesof youngsters in disadvantaged areas,” ex-plained Samuels.

“These include taking children to a res-taurant, like we are doing today, or to amovie, to the beach or a picnic, but it’s justsomething to show them that there are peo-ple out there who care for them and wantthem to succeed in life.”

A major new development for the groupis that local entrepreneur Candice Klein-smith of Eye Kandi Wear, has joined forcesto help them.

“This is such an amazing initiative thatwe want to play a big part in helping them,”she said.

“We will be assisting them with fundrai-sers and already have plans for a WinterFashion Show in May. Their aims tie inwith ours to empower and guide youth toachieve the positive potential in their li-ves.”V If there is anybody who shares the same passionand would like to join, contribute or has a need, please contact them at [email protected], orcontact Paula on 072 211 9988, Candice on 076 0212971, and Chevon on 071 474 1245.

when Dr Robert Koch discovered Mycobac-terium tuberculosis, the bacteria that causetuberculosis (TB).This discovery was the most important

step taken towards the control and elimina-tion of this deadly disease.Among infectious diseases, TB remains

the second leading killer of adults in theworld, with more than two million TB-rela-ted deaths each year.In the City of Cape Town it has been al-

most 10 years since the health departmentbegan their efforts to increase the TB curerate, anddecrease thenumberof peoplewhodon’t complete their treatment. In 2004, the cure rate was 67 %, today, it

is 85 %.Nursing sister Glenda Koning, who ran

the awareness project at the clinic said thatpart of the programme against the diseasewas creating awareness of appointed TB as-sistants and clerks who visit people at theirhomes to ensure that they were on treat-ment and to ensure TB registers were up todate.“At our programme today we are making

the community aware of getting timeous

sputum tests from people on treatment andwe monitored progress very closely.“Part of our programme is also to make

people aware of safe sexual practices for

Are you ready for some cool old-schoolcrooning?For the past 40 years The Whispers have

been making their musical magic andthey’re still going strong with a visit tothese shores on Saturday 1 June. His People Centre in Parow will be the

venue where they will be performing withtheir 10-piece band for this once-in-a-life-time performance. When you take their talent into consider-

ation it’s not hard to realise that they re-main one of only a few “Old School” groupsthat can boast of having over 40 years in theindustry with a worldwide fan base, main-taining their vocal dominance and originalmembers. They come from an era when your raw

talent was enough to take you to the topwithout any fancy music videos and gim-micks, but they had a style thatwas all theirown, and it’s all still there in their perform-ances today. While they had a string of hits over the

years in Cape Town one of their songs thatwill always fill a dancefloor for young andold is “Love is Where You find It”, and thisone will have everybody singing alongwhen they perform in Cape Town.Event organiser Calvin Peters, said that

this had been an idea of his for quite sometime and it was finally coming together.“As a DJ for various functions I’ve seen

what happens when I play The Whispers,”he said.“People’s eyes just light up, for many it

Blikkiesdorp residents want strong actionagainst vandals in the area. They are joining the City of Cape Town

who once again condemns the vandalism ofits infrastructure in the strongest possibleterms, after the traffic signals at the inter-section of Sheffield Road and Sarah Baart-man Road, were vandalised twice duringMarch.

VandalismThis is the latest incident in a spate of the

vandalism of city infrastructure, includingMyCiTi bus stops, traffic signals in the Ta-ble View area and street lights in Khayelit-sha.Antonette Loots, who lives near the inter-

section, said it was despicable that vandalshad targeted the lights.“The people in the area are very upset be-

cause those lights are there for a purpose, for our safety,” she said.“We have been asking for it for a long

time to make that intersection safer and itwas only put up earlier this year. Now wehave these criminals who just want to de-stroy their community when protestingabout services.”Brett Herron, mayoral committee mem-

ber for transport, roads and stormwater, al-so pointed out that this vandalism severelyaffects the city’s service delivery roll outprogramme.

Damage“It is most regrettable that it is poorer

communities who are most vulnerable tovandals and their callous regard for the re-sidents of our city.“The damagewill cause the city unantici-

pated costs. These funds could have beenutilised elsewhere, such as on installingnew road infrastructure in the city. Fundswill nowhave to bediverted away fromnewinfrastructure installation to repair thedamaged cables,” he said. The traffic signals at this site were in-

stalled on 29 January this year, mainly tomake this intersection safe for pedestrians, and were initially vandalised on 11 Marchduring a service delivery protest.

Repairs damagedThe damage was repaired the following

day, but it was vandalised again on 22March, and the damage was worse than thefirst time. Repairs were carried out and thesignals were back in operation on Wednes-day 27 March.“Not only is it disappointing and frustra-

ting for our infrastructure to bevandalised, but for it to be done during protests aboutservice delivery is disgraceful, to damageservices that have been installed as a formof protest to demonstrate for further servi-ces to be installed is counter-intuitive,”concluded Herron.

City files forinterdict intoll disputeDESIREÉ RORKE

The City of Cape Town is all systems goto fight the proposedN1-N2WinelandsToll Highway project.

If it gets the go-ahead this project is likelyto leave everyone living along, or using theN1 out of pocket. It last week filed an urgent application

for an interdict, which will be heard in theWestern Cape High Court on 16 May.This interdict if granted will provide the

city with an order to prevent Sanral fromtaking any steps towards implementationof the project, pending the review applica-tion by the same court. This review application was brought by

the city on 28 March last year, to seek re-view of the decisions taken by the environ-mental and transportministers to grant au-thorisation for the project; and Sanral whodeclared the highways as a toll road.

ApplicationAccording to Brett Herron,mayoral com-

mittee member for road and transport, thecity has been unable to bring the exchangeof pleadings in the above review applica-tion to a close because Sanral has refusedto provide them with a complete record ofdocuments relevant to the toll road project. This includes how much the project will

cost and what toll fees are likely to be lev-ied.“As a consequence of this, the city also

brought an application to compel Sanral todisclose these documents.”This application was instituted against

Sanral on 1 March this year and will, by di-rection of the acting judge president and atthe request of the city’s legal team, be heardat the same time as the city’s urgent inter-dict application on 16 May.

Groundless“Sanral’s notice to the city that it intends

to implement the toll road project was re-ceived on 6March – a few days after the cityinstituted the High Court application tocompel it to provide those documents thatare absent from the record and which San-ral has refused to provide,” says CouncillorHerron.According to him, Sanral gave as the rea-

sons for the sudden need to implement thetoll road project, the need to upgrade andmaintain the road and to address safetyconcerns.“Through our own investigation, those

purported reasons have proven to begroundless and exaggerated,” he adds.“We believe that the true reason for ter-

minating the undertaking is to manufac-ture a situation whereby the time the re-view application is heard the court will bepresented with a fait accompli, as was thecase inGauteng,” saysHerronwhobelievesthat the city’s application to compel the dis-closure of themissing documents triggeredSanral’s notice of implementation.“Despite Sanral’s claims that it is willing

to engage with the city, the facts speak forthemselves. Sanral is a public agencycharged with managing and maintainingSouth Africa’s national road network.“It is our view that Sanral’s refusal to ful-

ly disclose all the relevant information onthe Winelands Toll Road project to the cityand to the residents of Cape Town, placesit in breach of its constitutional duty of ac-countability, responsiveness, openness, transparency and co-operative govern-ance.”

Not legitimateHerron says Sanral has no legitimate rea-

son for withholding any information relat-ing to its decision to toll portions of the N1and N2 or what the impact will be for thepeople of our city and our country.“Its alarmist and exaggerated claims that

the N1 and N2 are in danger of falling apartunless the toll road project is implementedis opportunistic,” Herron said.Reacting to this application Sanral stated

that there is no basis for the city to interdictthem but should it go ahead, they will op-pose the interdict and seek a punitive costsorder against the city.
