Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary TimeFirst Reading: 2 Kings 5:14-17

This first reading is closely tied to the Gospel in that both speak of the gratitude of someone who has been cured of leprosy.

Here, Naaman, an army commander of the king of Aram and a foreigner is healed by the prophet Elisha. Naaman offered gifts of thanksgiving, which Elisha refused.

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 2:8-13St. Paul almost dismissed his own suffering for the sake of the Gospel. He reminded Timothy that through our Baptism and through our suffering, we are united with Christ, who remains faithful to us - whether or not we remain faithful to Him.

Gospel: Luke 17:11-19When Jesus cured ten lepers, he told them to show themselves to the priests. The priests were able to de-clare them healed. Only one, a Samaritan, on realizing he was healed, returned to Jesus to thank Him, presum-ably before showing himself to the priests. His gratitude was primary; secondary was the showing himself to the priest and returning to a normal life.Jesus, once again, held up the behavior of a Samaritan as a model to the Jews.

From the Desk of Deacon Anthony October 9, 2016Attitude, Gratitude, Perspective, Thankfulness

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by foster-ing actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community

within and without our parish.

With the return of the only grateful leper in today’s Gospel, that leper received a greater blessing because of his at-titude of gratitude. He was made whole; not only was he cured but he was once again made part of the human race and was able to thankfully return to society.

Jesus said to the leper, “Get up and go on your way, your faith has made you well.” There is always a special healing that goes along with an act of thanksgiving.

Recall the events that took place soon after 9/11. In reflection, many of us recognized that we might be looking at life in a material and individual way. So often we do forget the One to whom we owe all that we have, the God in whom we are able to live and breathe and have our being. Someone once said “Those who do not need God cannot know God.”

The Hebrew word for praise and thanksgiving is “Yadav”. It literally means “to hold out one’s hands.” It is the gesture we see when the priest celebrates the Eucharist, hands held out and lifted, and during other parts of the Celebration of the Mass.

Recall in the Preface of the Eucharistic Prayer, when the priest prays, “The Lord be with you.” And we respond: “And, with your Spirit.” The priest then prays: “Lift up your hearts.” We respond, “We lift them up to the Lord.” Then the priest prays, “Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.” And we respond, “It is right and just.” And indeed, it is right and just that we praise and thank the Lord with all our hearts, with all our minds, and with all our souls - with our very being.

Eucharist, means “thanksgiving”. Thanksgiving is the central act of our worship throughout the Eucharist. As family and as community, it is the essence of our worship. Thankfulness is a key to true spirituality.

Just like the returning leper’s response, our attitude towards gratitude is a key to our perspective of wholeness. Our thankfulness is found in our response to the unconditional love that Jesus Christ has given to all of us; as each Sunday, we witness what happened one Friday afternoon upon a cross.

Next Week: 29th Sunday in Ordinary TimeFirst Reading: Exodus 17:8-13

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 3:14 - 4:2Gospel: Luke 18:1-8

58. Why do Catholics believe in Angels?

The word “angel” comes from the Greek word “an-gelos” meaning “messenger.” Christians have come to understand angels as ones who often bring God’s power and messages to Earth. They are bodiless crea-tures with intelligence and free will who are dedicat-ed to God.

There is much biblical evidence of angels, including Jesus’ own words. For example, he talked about the angels of children (Matthew 18:10) and refers to an-gels in Heaven (Matthew 24 & 25).

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will an-swer them to the best of our ability.

The Parish NurseBreast Cancer

Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the tissues (duct and gland tissues) of the breast. Although it is more common in women, it is not only a female

disease. It is the second* leading cause of cancer death in women (lung cancer is the first)

In women, the median age of diagnosis is 61 and statistics show that about 12% of the women born today will be diag-nosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. That equates to about 1 in 8 women. Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer diagnosis.

Certain risk factors increase the incidence of breast cancer. Some of these risk factors are:

• Being a woman, age 60 or above• Personal health history: having breast cancer in one

breast increases risk of getting the disease in the oppo-site breast

• Family history: diagnosis of breast cancer in mother, father, sister or daughter, or if a family member was di-agnosed under the age of 50. In addition, risk increases if a family member was diagnosed with ovarian cancer

• Genome changes: changes in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene

• History of having radiation therapy to the chest area be-fore the age of 30.

• Reproductive and menstrual history:• The older a woman is when she has her first child• Not having children• Menarche (first menstrual period) before age 12• Menopause after the age of 55• Using hormone replacement therapy for many years

• Race: increased incidence in white women• Dense breast tissue• History of taking DES• Being overweight after menopause• Lack of physical exercise• Drinking alcohol

* Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women
