From the Desk of Fr. Connolly May 21, 2017Fátima Centenary and the Rosary

Sixth Sunday of Easter

Next Week: The Seventh Sunday of Easter1st Reading: Acts 1:12-14

2nd Reading: 1 Peter 4:13-16

Gospel: John 17:1-11a

Second Reading: 1 Peter 3:15-18St. Peter gave advice on how we should conduct ourselves. Despite our actions, there will be people who cause us to suffer. We need to realize that our suffering unites us with Christ.

First Reading: Acts 8:5-8, 14-17St. Luke the Evangelist also wrote the Acts of the Apostles, describing the activities of the early Church. In the be-ginning of this selection, he described the activities of St. Philip. Later, he described the activities of Saints Peter and John, drawing a distinction between Baptism and receiving the Holy Spirit (Confirmation).

Gospel: John 14:15-21Jesus promised another Advocate.

Jesus was the first Advocate; the Holy Spirit was the prom-ised Advocate. The word "Advocate" encompasses such concepts as comforter, counselor, defender, intercessor, me-diator, spokesperson, and more.

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the

spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish.

Pray the Rosary. Pray the Rosary. Pray the Rosary. Pray the Rosary. Pray the Rosary. Pray the Rosary.

Now, if you think this six fold admonition for you all to pray the rosary is excessive, I remind you that to pray the rosary was the only request Our Lady repeated in all six of her apparitions to the children of Fátima. Six times in Fátima Our Lady said, “Pray the Rosary every day …”

We are currently in the midst of the Fátima Centenary. One hundred years ago, in 1917, Our Lady appeared six times to the shepherd children Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta; imparting to them a message calling for the world to return to God to avoid catastrophe. During this centenary year, we should seek to inculcate Our Lady’s message at Fátima within our spiritual life. There is no better way to do so, than by heeding Our Lady’s call to pray the rosary daily, especially as a family.

Words of Our Lady of Fátima on the Holy Rosary:

“Pray the Rosary every day, in order to obtain peace for the world, and the end of the war.”May 13, 1917

“I wish you to come here on the 13th of next month, to pray the Rosary each day.”June 13, 1917

“I want you to come here on the 13th of next month, and to continue praying the Rosary every day in honor of Our Lady of the Rosary, in order to obtain peace for the world and the end of the war, because only she can help you.”

July 13, 1917

“I want you to continue praying the Rosary every day”August 19, 1917

“Continue to say the Rosary to obtain the end of the war.”September 13, 1917

“I am Our Lady of the Rosary. Continue to say the Rosary every day.”October 13, 1917

“You at least try to console Me and announce in My name that I promise to assist at the moment of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the First Saturday of five consecutive months shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the Rosary, and keep Me company for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen

mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making Reparation to Me.”December 10, 1925 to Sister Lucia at Pontevedra

90. What are Charisms?Charisms are special spiritual gifts given to some of the Church’s members. St. Paul explains charisms as the gifts that the Holy Spirit distributes among us, such as healing, prophesy, working miracles, and uttering wis-dom (1 Corinthians 12).

Other charisms include papal infallibility and priestly celibacy. Religious orders have charisms such as teach-ing or nursing. These charisms are not rewards for personal holiness, but are freely distributed among the faithful to be used for the good of all.

Ask the Holy Spirit to make you aware of the charisms that he may have for you. Always say “yes” to receive them, and then to use them for the building up of the Body of Christ, the Church.

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.

use;• Use of the Internet has threatened relationships with

loved ones, career, or school work;• Loss of time when in the Internet;• Lying to people about the amount of time spent online;

Zeppole at the CarnivalOnce again, we will be preparing Nonna Sorgie’s Zeppole to be sold at this year’s ICS Carnival. With the help of a Zeppole team of staff and vol-unteers, this year’s Zeppole will be more incredi-ble than last year for the four days of the carnival. We will be making all 800 pounds of dough from scratch, and all proceeds will stay with the par-ish. No one is paid. So I ask your help; I am begging for volunteers to fry, sugar, bag and sell zeppole for an evening at least. Call the rectory if you want to work for a few hours, or speak to me: 961-3643.

I am also begging for the ingredients we need; if you can help with any of it, just let me know:

800 pounds of enriched flour from our bak-eries, pizzerie, Restaurant Depot or Otto Brehm, Inc. (75 Tuckahoe Road). Even a 50 pound bag donation helps.

800 eggs (approximately 67 dozen) 100 pounds of confectioner’s sugar ; 80 pounds of granulated sugar ; 8 cans of Morton or Diamond Crystal table

salt 15 1-pound blocks of fresh yeast (or 240 3/4

ounce packets of dry yeast) 10 35-pound High Performance Canola Fry

Oil (sold at Otto Brehm, Restaurant Depot, Sam’s Club and Costco).

; Note: We already have commitments for the items that have been checked. Thank you to our generous donors!

HOPE Soup Kitchen - June 14 & 20Due to the increased number of people in need of meals at the HOPE soup kitchen, we are reaching beyond our dedicated group of “Volunteer Angels” who cook and do-nate food once a month to anyone able to help whenever possible.

The next scheduled days for our Parish are Wednesday, June 14 and Tuesday, June 20. The menu consists of Cold Chicken (legs and thighs), 2 dozen hard boiled eggs (leave in shell and store in carton, 2 large bags of mixed salad greens and a bottle of French dressing (donations of any of the above are appreciated).

Aluminum pans or plastic bags will be available on the back porch of the rectory for the cooked entrée (enough for 10-15 people). Food should be brought to the Immac-ulate Conception rectory back porch by 2:30 PM on the designated days. For information, call Kathy Doscher: 337-3356 or visit: www.assumption-immaculate.org/ministries/hope.php.
