Second Sunday of Lent

Second Reading: 2 Timothy 1:8b-10St. Paul admonished Timothy to preach the Gospel and to rely on the strength that will come from God. The call to holiness is a result of God’s plan and is not earned by the one being called.

First Reading: Genesis 12:1-4aAbram/Abraham provides us with a model of perfect obedi-ence. God asked him to leave all that he had and move from the familiar to the unknown. God promised Abram blessings as well as His protection. For his part, Abram did what God asked.

Gospel: Matthew 17:1-9The Gospel relates the Transfiguration of our Lord. This confusing event emphasized the fact that Jesus is the Son of God. The voice from the cloud reminds us of the Baptism of the Lord “This is my beloved Son, … listen to him.” And the choice of the same three apostles, Peter, James and John, will be seen again at the Agony in the Garden (Matthew 26:37).

Next Week: Third Sunday of LentFirst Reading: Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18 • Second Reading:

1 Corinthians 3:16-23 • Gospel: Matthew 5:38-48

From the Desk of Fr. Connolly March 12, 2017Saint Patrick: Apostle of Ireland

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the

spiritual and social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish.

St. Patrick is Ireland’s great apostle. The life of this great man, in whom deep faith and Celtic tenacity are united, is rich in marvelous achievements.

He was born in Roman Britain and when he was fourteen or so, he was captured by Irish pi-rates during a raiding party and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd and tend sheep. At the time, Ireland was a land of Druids and pagans, but St. Patrick turned to God and wrote his memoir, The Confession. In The Confession, he wrote: “The love of God and his fear grew in me more and more, as did the faith, and my soul was raised, so that, in a single day, I have said as many as a hundred prayers and in the night, nearly the same. I prayed in the woods and on the mountain, even before dawn.” St. Patrick’s captivity lasted until he was twenty, when he escaped after having a dream from God in which he was told to leave Ireland by going to the coast. There he found some sailors who took him back to Britain and was reunited with his family.

Later, a vision from God prompted him to study for the priesthood. He was ordained by St. Germanus, the Bishop of Auxerre, whom he had studied under for years. He was later ordained a bishop and sent to take the Gospel to Ireland, the land in which he was once enslaved.

St. Patrick arrived in Slane, Ireland on March 25, 433. Soon he met the chieftain of one of the druid tribes, who tried to kill him. After an intervention from God, St. Patrick was able to convert the chieftain and preach the Gospel throughout Ireland. There, he converted thousands of souls from paganism to the truths of the Catholic faith and began building churches across the country.

He often used shamrocks to explain the Holy Trinity; and entire kingdoms were eventually converted to Christianity after hearing St. Patrick’s sermons.

For forty years, St. Patrick preached tirelessly, worked many miracles, and converted all of Ireland. He died on 17 March 461.

He died at Saul, where he had built the first Irish church. He is believed to be buried in Down Cathedral, Downpatrick. His grave was marked in 1990 with a granite stone. This is from his famous poem and prayer, “The Breastplate”:

Christ be within me, Christ behind me, Christ before me, Christ beside me, Christ to win me,Christ to comfort and restore me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ inquired, Christ in danger,

Christ in hearts of all that love me, Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.

Six Steps to a Healthy Heart

When it comes to management and prevention of heart disease, we have no control over heredity, increasing age, gender, or race. There are many choices we make in our life that will have a direct effect on our heart health. Smoking and inactivity are two such

choices. High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes are other

risk factors for heart disease that we have some control over, but which also require lifestyle changes, monitoring by our physician, and possibly adherence to medical treatment.

• Don’t smoke cigarettes! This is the best thing you can do for yourself! Tobacco is the single most prevent-able cause of death in the United States. If you already smoke and cannot quit on your own, get help to quit.

• Have your blood pressure checked regularly! High blood pressure (140/90 or higher), makes your heart work harder which in turn puts more strain on your ar-teries and veins.

• Read labels! Make sure you eat foods that are low in saturated fats, trans-fats and cholesterol. Limit your sat-urated fat intake to 8-10 percent of total calories or less.

• Stay physically active! Any activity that you enjoy and will perform regularly is the best activity for you!

• Achieve your proper weight! Speak to your physician or follow the American Heart Associations guidelines for a balanced diet.

• Have regular medical check-ups! Checkups are espe-cially important if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes. Follow doctors’ in-structions to reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.

80. Are we have the Cardinal’s Appeal for 2017?No! This year we are NOT participating in the Car-dinal’s Annual Appeal in the usual manner. Cardinal Dolan has launched a 5-year pledge campaign that every parish will participate in called RENEW + REBUILD. Our goal will be two million dollars here at Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady Parish. The Major Donor Phase has been happening since Decem-ber 1, 2016 and is a quiet phase. We have been doing very well and I will share with you everything as we ap-proach the end of this phase. Then we will be appealing to every family in our parish to participate.

If you have received any letter or information asking you to give to the 2017 Appeal, please do not send any-thing in but please call the Parish Office.

God bless you, ahead of time, for your generosity.

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.
