Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Next Week: 21st Sunday in Ordinary TimeFirst Reading: Isaiah 66:18-21

Second Reading: Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13Gospel: Luke 13:22-30

First Reading: Jeremiah 38:4-6, 8-10Jeremiah the Prophet foretold the Babylonian exile, which was not well-received. Rather than reform their ways and look to God, people were ready to “kill the messenger”. But a few good men were able to rescue Jeremiah from the cistern in which he had been imprisoned.

Second Reading: Hebrews 13:1-4We are advised to persevere through our trials, with Je-sus as our Savior and model, in order to attain perfection.

Gospel: Luke 12:49-53Knowing the trials that awaited Him, Jesus looked forward to the time when He would have accomplished everything He needed to do. He knew that we would accept or reject His teachings; and those who would accept it would be at odds with those who would reject it.

From the Desk of Mr. Louis Masi August 14, 2016Vocations: Nurtured in Families and Parishes

I am filled with immense joy and gratitude after spending the summer at the Parish of the Immaculate Con-ception & Assumption of Our Lady. I am grateful to all of you, the parishioners of this wonderful parish, for welcom-ing me so graciously and for playing a role in my preparation for the priesthood.

Often people ask me to share my “vocation story,” meaning that they want me to tell them how I came to un-derstand that God is calling me to the priesthood. Though this column is too short for that story, I would like to share two things about my journey to the priesthood. First, my family played an essential role in my discernment. My parents worked hard to ensure that I could receive a good Catholic education and they made sure that we were ac-tive in the life of the Church. Second, our parish, which was my second home, played an equally important role. The priests of the parish, by their example of prayer, sacrifice, and faithfulness to the service of God and His Church, were inspiring. As important, though, were the many good men and women of the parish who supported, encouraged, and prayed for me as they saw me grow up. Many even said at various points, “Louis, you would make a good priest. You should think and pray about it.” Some even said more definitively, “You will be a priest one day!”

Though God calls many young men to the priesthood (and many young men and women to religious life), the secular society in which young people grow up, which is riddled with darkness and sin, often makes it very difficult to hear God’s voice. Young people today need families and parishes who, by their witness of a joy-filled faith, inspire and nurture vocations. These same young men and women need to be encouraged to ask the right question: What does God want me to be when I grow up?

Do not be afraid to encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life in your families and in this par-ish. Often families are hesitant about encouraging their children to consider a vocation to the priesthood or religious life. Remember, as St. John Vianney said, “without the priest, there is no Eucharist.” Without the priest, there is no Confession. Without the priest, there is no Anointing of the Sick. Just think: your son, grandson, or nephew could be an instrument of God’s mercy, bringing the love of God to those who are in most need!

In just two weeks I will return to my studies in Rome. The chapel in the seminary where I reside (The Pontifi-cal North American College) is dedicated to Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Know that I will remember this entire parish in my prayer each day as I enter that chapel. Please do not forget to pray for me and for all those who are preparing for the priesthood, especially in our own Archdiocese of New York. We truly rely on your prayers in order to persevere on the road upon which the Father has called us to travel.

Louis Philip Masi,Seminarian, Pontifical North American College (Rome)

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catholic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by foster-ing actions that nourish both the spiritual and social needs of our people and build community

Thank you to our Summer PriestsI want to thank Fr. Dermot O’Connor who has helped us by celebrating Masses weekdays and Sundays for a few weeks while he visits his family in the parish. Father re-turned to Galway this weekend where he serves as a Re-demptorist priest. We were glad to be able to celebrate the Feast of St. Alphonsus Liguori, who founded his Reli-gious Community, while he was here with us.

A second round of applause to Fr. Randy Soto, native of Costa Rica, Central America who is presently professor of Sacred Scripture at Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis, Mis-souri. From July 21 to August 9, he has been of full-time assistance here in the Parish and we are going to miss him very much and hope he returns at other breaks in his teaching schedule to share his priesthood with us.

A new face for some of you is Fr. André Cirino, OFM, who is a Franciscan Friar who lives in our community in the Siena Friary in Mt. Vernon. Last Lent he gave us a Mission and now he has agreed to help out when he is not preach-ing and teaching in Assisi, Italy or England. Fr. André will become a familiar face in due time.

God Wants You,Your Family, Friends, and Neighbors!

God is always in relentless pursuit of us, drawing us to-wards Him. His presence in our lives is the deepest de-sire of every human heart; we were made for this. He wants to share His divine life with us, and unite us to Himself, forever. This is what it means to be saved. He does this through his Church, the Body of Christ on earth and in heaven. The Church is the way we enter into a life-giving relationship with God. The Sacraments of the Church impart to us this Divine life, enabling us to know, love, and serve God and all He has created. The Church is the sacrament of salvation for all people. We are not born with this “saving” grace. If you are standing on the outside looking in, come in! The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the program of instruction and preparation for the Sacra-ments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirma-tion. These are the means God has established for us to enter into lifelong communion with Him, and with each other. Perhaps you are already baptized, but never com-pleted the other Sacraments of Initiation. The RCIA will prepare you to receive them fruitfully. To find out more, call Fr. Sorgie or Sr. Cora 961-3643.

RCIA Starts:Tuesday, September 13 • 7:00-8:30 PM

Know someone who would like to be Catholic? Invite them to connect with us. Give them one of the green postcards (on the tables in church) with our contact information.

From the Parish Nurse

Back to School

Lice

Lice are tiny, wingless, parasites that, like bed bugs, feed on your blood. They are eas-

ily spread (just ask any school nurse!), espe-cially by school children due to the close personal con-tact and sharing of personal belongings.

Head Lice develop on the scalp. They are easiest to see at the nape of the neck and over the ears. Small eggs (nits) produced by the lice attach to the hair shafts. The eggs hatch in about a week, producing more lice.

Body Lice spend their time in the folds of your clothing. Body lice are spread through direct contact with infected clothing or bedding, or with an infected person. In rare cases, body lice may carry diseases.

Lice spread through head to head or body to body con-tact, close proximity of stored belongings, sharing items, and contact with contaminated furniture.

Symptoms include intense itching, and small red bumps on the scalp, neck and shoulders. Lice on the scalp, body, or clothing can be seen; they are about 1/8” in size. Lice eggs stick to the hair shaft. They can be mistaken for dandruff, but they don’t easily brush off.

Treatment includes:• A nonprescription shampoo that is specifically

formulated to kill lice. Occasionally you may have to seek out your physician for a stronger prescrip-tion shampoo.

• Rinsing hair with vinegar after shampooing• Combing wet hair after rinsing to physically re-

move nits or lice from hair• Washing of all contaminated or potentially con-

taminated items• Sealing all non-washable items in airtight bags for

two weeks• Vacuuming floors and furniture• Covering furniture for two weeks to prevent re-in-

festation. Do not do this if you have small children who could suffocate in a plastic cover.

• Wash combs and brushes in very hot, soapy water, or soak them in alcohol for an hour.

50. Why are Catholics so concerned about sin?Sin is a deliberate thought, word, action or failure to act that is contrary to God’s law. It’s like an illness that makes your body sick. Some illnesses can make you feel miser-able but others can kill you. Some sins may delay our entry in Heaven and some can cause us to lose our eternal lives. Being aware of sin helps us to avoid it and stay in God’s friendship. The good news is: God is always ready to forgive our sins through the Sacrament of Reconcilia-tion. Go to confession!

Confessions are heard at the Church of the Assumption on Saturday afternoon: 3:30 – 4:00 PM

Confessions are heard at the Church of the Immaculate Conception on Saturday afternoon: 4:00 – 5:00 PM

You can also call the rectory for an appointment any day and ask for the Priest on duty to go to confession.

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.
