FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“I am meek and humble of heart.”

Matthew 11:25-30 Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings

In next Sunday’s Gospel, (July 12) Jesus will offer several parables to illustrate for his listeners what he means by the kingdom of heaven. He begins with the parable of the sower, which appears rather straightforward—of course seeds grow best in good soil. Seeds that miss the soil, are sown on rocky ground, or are sown among other plants will not grow. The surprise in the parable is the enormous yield of the seed that is sown on good soil. Jesus interprets the parable of the sower to his disciples. The different types of soil in which the seeds are sown are metaphors for the disposition with which each individual hears the teaching about the king-dom of heaven. Some will be easily swayed away from the kingdom of heaven. Some will receive it for a time but will lose it when faced with difficulties. Some will hear the word but will then permit other cares to choke it out. Yet some will receive it well, and the seed will produce abundant fruit.

SCRIPTURE READINGS

Isaiah 55:10-11: The Word of the Lord shall achieve its purpose.

Romans 8:18-23: Together with all of creation, we await God’s redemption. Matthew 13:1-23: Jesus teaches that the kingdom of heaven is like seed that has been sown on good soil.

A Pilgrim’s Progress….. Thank you to those who continue to help our parishes provide a safe environment to give praise and glory to God through our daily prayer and worship. The parishioners of St. Columcille and Immaculate Conception continue to do a good job with the safe practices implemented by the Diocese. Special thanks to the volunteers who help to “sanitize” our churches after mass. We will continue to have our 5:00 P.M. mass on Sunday at Immaculate Conception as long as the current limits on numbers per mass remain in place. I am eliminating the alphabetical designations for each mass and encouraging all to attend the mass that works the best for you. This week I will be journeying with friends on a vacation/pilgrimage to the upper peninsula of Michigan. Our ultimate destination will be St. Peter Cathedral in Marquette and a prayer at the tomb of missionary Bishop Venerable Frederic Baraga, S.J. Bishop Baraga helped to nurture the seeds of our Catholic faith in the Great Lakes region and was the first bishop to write a pastoral letter in both the English and Chippewa languages. He is a good model for our times I believe as our nation continues to try to reconcile the reality of the fallen world into which we have all be born with our desire for that anticipated “new heaven and new earth” of St. John’s Revelation. We know the secular iconoclasm around us, the criminal violence that is destroying physical reminders of our nation’s past will never bring authentic reconciliation, peace, or healing. I believe that our Lord Jesus Christ, in the words of the Our Father, gave us the prayer that can guide us through these tumultuous times. As we pray several times a day, it is only by asking God for forgiveness for our sins and extending that same forgiveness to those who have sinned against us, that healing can begin. St. Augustine taught authentic forgiveness is simply about giving up the natural desire for revenge. It means “breaking the chain.” The man I like to call the “real Mayor Daley” (Richard J. Daley 1902-1976) used to say: “it’s better to get ahead than it is to get even.” Getting ahead means calling things by their right names (telling the truth), rejecting violence against human life and property as a solution to our differences, and taking the next good step together.

As Catholic Christians we are blessed with the tools we can offer our nation in this new year of our na-tional life. We have the truth of Christ’s revelation in sacred scripture and in the living tradition of the Church. We have the graces of the Sacramental life. Our challenge is to continue to be the faithful witnesses our nation and our world need at this hour. Let’s don’t stop trying now. Deo Vindice, fr john

“TOGETHER FOR LIFE”

Our monthly Baby Bottle Blessings effort provides one of the key sources of income for our four area Choices Pregnancy and Health Centers. Our staff and volunteers depend on this support to assist young mothers and fathers in making life-giving de-cisions, learning parenting skills, and helping our young people learn how to live chaste and holy lives in the Lord. Because our bottles have not been distributed as widely as normal during our national emergency a basket for a “2nd collection” is avail-able in the vestibule to support this good work. The babies thank you for your support.

Prayer for Our County O glorious Guardian Angel of the United States, to whom God has entrusted the care of our beloved country, we honor you and thank you for the care and protection you have given to this great nation from the first moment of its inception. O powerful Angel Guardian, whose watchful glance encompasses this vast land from shore to shore, we know that our sins have grieved our Lord and God and marred the beauty of our heritage. Lead us to a deep conversion, so that we may return to the em-brace of His merciful love! O Holy Angel, obtain for us through the intercession of the Queen of Heaven before the throne of God the graces we need to overcome the forces of evil so rampant in our beloved land. Help us, our God-given protector and friend, to respond wholeheartedly to the urgent pleas of the Mother of God at Fatima. As-sist us to offer the prayers and sacrifices necessary to bring peace and goodness to our nation. We want to make you known and loved throughout our land, so that docile to your inspirations we may know, love and serve our Lord more faithfully and so become once more "one Nation under God"! Amen.
