THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“Whoever does not take up his cross is not worthy

of me. Whoever receives you, receives me.” Matthew 10:37-42

Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings In next Sunday’s Gospel, (July 5) comes after a dis-

course in which Jesus reproaches people who have

witnessed his mighty deeds yet still lack belief. Jesus

first prays in thanksgiving to God who has made him-

self known to Jesus’ disciples. He praises God who

has made himself known to the “little ones” and not

to the wise and learned. The second part of this read-

ing calls to our attention the unity between the Fa-

ther and the Son. God has made himself known

through Jesus, and in knowing Jesus, we come to

know the Father. In Jesus’ life and in his person,

God reveals himself to us. In the concluding sen-

tences of today’s Gospel, Jesus’ teaching is again

contrasted to the teaching of the Pharisees. Here that

tension is expressed as alternative paths of holiness.

The careful observance of the Mosaic law taught by

the Pharisees could be experienced by some as diffi-

cult and burdensome. In contrast, Jesus’ way of holi-

ness is presented as uncomplicated and even restful.

SCRIPTURE READINGS

Zechariah 9:9-10: The Lord shall come to reign in

Zion.

Romans 8:9, 11-13: Those in whom the Spirit of God

dwells must now live according to the Spirit, not the

flesh. Matthew 11:25-30: Jesus prays in thanks to God, who

has revealed himself to the lowly.

A Pilgrim’s Progress

This week as we celebrate the 244th anniversary of Charles

Carroll and 55 non-Catholics signing the Declaration of

Independence, it is a good opportunity to reflect on the

responsibility we share as Catholic Christians to uphold our

nation’s commitment to the values of the Gospel.

All around us a legitimate desire for justice and an honest

reflection on our shared history is being hijacked by too

many with an anti-Christian, Marxist, anti-life agenda, and

common criminals. Praise God our liturgical calendar

gives us a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our response.

Monday’s Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul reminds us that

those who would win the world for Christ must be willing to

come into conflict with it. On Wednesday July 1 we

celebrate the memorial of St. Junipero Serra, who is

deserving of recognition, along with the Declaration

signers, as a founder of our nation. When Pope Francis

canonized him five years ago, he emphasized St. Serra’s

defense of the “dignity of the native community.” On

foot, he traveled the length of the west coast establishing the

California missions and “built” was is today that state. Fr.

Serra’s sacrificial work among the native peoples has been

well documented and the fact that his images and Catholic

Churches are being desecrated by modern day “Know-

Nothings” and anarchists is a very sad commentary. The

Know-Nothings were an anti-Catholic, anti-immigrant 19th

century political party. Those who do their bidding or

refuse to stand up to these anarchists and bigots are what Fr.

George Rutler has described as “fellow travelers or useful

idiots.”

St. Serra is one of thirteen Catholics (and 4 priests) whose

images stand in Statuary Hall under the U.S. Capitol

dome. (one can wonder out loud how long they will be

allowed to remain) Two images represent each state. Fr.

Kino, (Arizona), Fr. Marquette (Wisconsin), St. Fr. Damien

(Hawaii), Mother Mary Joseph Pariseau of the Sisters of

Charity of Providence (Washington) are included. Illinois is

represented by one Catholic, Gen. James Shields (a U.S.

Senator and State Supreme Court Judge). He once

challenged Abraham Lincoln to a duel and gives his name to

a Chicago street intersecting with 35th St. at the home of the

Chicago White Sox.

Our Catholic love of saints points us to our need for human

intercessors. Their example and witness helps the rest of us

to understand what we are not. We are not saints. That is

why we prize sanctity and seek it out in others. That is why

we stay in the fight for holiness ourselves. The most

popular saints tend to be those whose holiness shines

through their obvious humanity. The canonization process

includes the work of a “devil’s advocate” to seek out the

reasons (and they are always there) as to why the candidate

should not be so honored.

Walker, Art Welsh, Gary Smith, Ron and Marylyn

ton and Rebecca.

St. Junipero Serra, St. Damien of Molokai, and all the

other Catholic (and non-Catholic) men and women who

have helped to build this nation were part of a great pro-

cession. They were men and women of their time called

by God to take the “next good step” towards living the

Kingdom of God. They will all be present through the

Eucharist at the altar at Calvary Cemetery at 8 AM on the

4th as we celebrate the Holy Mass. I hope to see you

there too.

“TOGETHER FOR LIFE”

Our monthly Baby Bottle Blessings effort provides

one of the key sources of income for our four area

Choices Pregnancy and Health Centers. Our staff

and volunteers depend on this support to assist

young mothers and fathers in making life-giving de-

cisions, learning parenting skills, and helping our

young people learn how to live chaste and holy lives

in the Lord. Because our bottles have not been

distributed as widely as normal during our national

emergency a basket for a “2nd collection” is avail-

able in the vestibule to support this good work. The

babies thank you for your support.

Prayer for Our Nation God our Father, Giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to Your loving care. You are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Reclaim this land for Your glory and dwell among Your people. Send Your Spirit to touch the hearts of our na-tion’s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind Your people that true happiness is rooted in seeking and doing Your will. Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, Patroness of our land, Grant us the courage to reject the “culture of death.” Lead us into a new millennium of life. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
