THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD
“When Jesus had been baptized and was praying,
heaven was opened.” Luke 3:15-16, 21-22
Prepare For Next Sunday’s Readings
INTRODUCTION
In next Sunday’s Gospel, (January 20), from the beginning of and throughout his ministry,
Jesus revealed who he was. The first reading
describes God’s relationship with Israel in
spousal terms, so it is not surprising that Jesus’
first sign took place at a wedding feast. All that
he did was essentially about God’s unending
love for us. Every aspect of life, including
marriage, can speak to us of this deep,
pervading, unifying love. How is that expressed
in our own particular lives?
SCRIPTURE READINGS
Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7: The servant of the Lord will
establish justice
Acts 10:34-38: God’s word to Israel is fulfilled
in Christ
Luke 3:15-16, 21-22: Jesus is baptized and

A Letter from our Organist, David Walker: Dear Friends from St. Columcille, I have appreciated and greatly benefited from the many cards and gifts you have sent and delivered to me this past year. Due to stroke I was not able to write to you individually and even collectively. Please accept my thanks in this group letter. As many of you know I have been able to return to the organ bench. My physical capabilities are returning thanks to persistent and gifted physical therapists and occupational therapists. Again, thank you for your prayers and encouragement on my behalf.
Sincerely, Dave Walker
NEWS FOR ST. C & IC
Our January contribution envelope packets contain an
envelope for IC (ACSA and Catholic Times) and St. C
(Catholic Times). The ACSA envelope goes toward
our parish assessment. Checks can be made out to
ACSA and will be forwarded to the diocese.
Each registered household should be receiving the
Catholic Times. If not, PLEASE let the parish office
know. The parish is billed for the CT based on a
percentage of parish income. Your contribution is
applied towards our total parish bill. Thank you for
your help in meeting these parish expenses.
A Pilgrim’s Progress….
While today’s feast of the Baptism of the Lord ends our liturgical celebration of Christmas, it’s certainly okay to extend our celebration to February 2nd‘s Feast of the Presentation. On that 40th day after Christmas (also known as Candlemas) we remember Our Lady and St. Joseph bringing the child Jesus to the temple and presenting him to the Father. On what the calendar calls Ground Hog’s Day the Church blesses candles and celebrates that Jesus Christ is the true light of the world. In other great news Professor Michael Pakaluk from the Catholic University of America, writing from, The Catholic Thing website (check it out at www.thecatholicthing.org) (it “provides a forum for intelligent Catholic commentary”) offers four ways to extend Christmas throughout the year: 1) we keep a crucifix in our homes all year, why not a creche? Or at least the infant Jesus in a manger. 2) See Christmas in the mass. We know the death and Resurrection of the Lord is made present for us at each mass. So, of course, is the Incarnation. We can look upon the Lord raised in the host as the Epiphany. It is his manifestation to us. Bethlehem means “house of bread.” Our Lord is humbly hidden in the tabernacle as he was in Bethlehem’s stable. Imagine coming away from each mass “another way” and ready to give new gifts to each other. 3) See the effects of the Incarnation being passed down through each generation through the Sacraments. Christ is the head of his family, the Church. By sacramental grace we become heirs and “carriers” of His mission. 4) Celebrate Christmas in each birthday. Chesterton said celebrating birthdays is “distinctively Christian.” And very pro-life. Birthdays celebrate not accomplishment or even maturity. Jesus said those who “receive a little child in his name receive Him.” God’s remedy for hardness of heart in every season is His coming as a newborn child. God’s remedy is Christmas! May what was once said of Ebenezer Scrooge be said of each of us: that we “kept Christmas well” all year long. Pax et Bonum, fr john

Change for Choices!
The annual baby bottle change collection has been
one of the most successful and vital fundraising
opportunities for our Choices Health and
Pregnancy Center in their daily efforts to assist
young women with life saving choices. Since
Choices need income throughout the year and
since you and I have loose change every day or
week as well, these life saving bottles will be
available in our church vestibules throughout the
year. Simply pick up one of the bottles in the
basket in the St. Columcille or I.C. vestibule, fill it
with your change, and return it to church at any
Sunday mass. This income throughout the year
will help Choices help others.

We all have a vision for where we want to be
in 2019 – Maybe yours includes being a part
of the St. Vincent De Paul Society?
If you have been contemplating how you may
help serve those “most in need” in our local
community or have the desire to become more
involved in your church community, The St.
Vincent de Paul Society of Immaculate
Conception would like to invite you to join our
group this year. Interested individuals can learn
more about our group by attending our first
meeting of the year – on Wednesday, January
16th at 6:30pm in the K of C Hall. When you
attend this meeting you will find a welcoming
group that gathers for just 30 to 45 minutes on
the 3rd Wednesday of every month to say a few
prayers, review and discuss how can we best
serve the needs of the poor in our community,
and lastly, say a few prayers for those of our
community and parish who are at most need of
our prayers. Responsibilities for being a part of
this organization usually requires a commitment
of less than 3 hours per month, as we meet with
clients requesting financial assistance from the
Society on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each
month from 9am to 11am in the Church
basement, and members rotate the responsibility
for this task so that members with weekend plans
are rarely if ever inconvenienced. In addition,
we usually plan at least one fundraising activity
each year that members assist in planning and
working the event. Interested individuals that
would like more information about the Society
of St. Vincent de Paul are welcome to call the
organization members listed below if they have
questions:
