The title minor basilica was conferred upon the church of the Immaculate Conception in 2008 by the authority of the Holy Father entrusted to the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. The title minor basilica distinguishes the church in rank from the few churches in the world that bear the title major basilica.

The Church celebrates the Baptism of Our Lord on Monday, January 8.

This brings to an end the season of Christmas.

The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan.

For the Week of January 8 Monday, January 8 The Baptism of the Lord

Isaiah 55: 1-11 or 1 John: 1-9; Mark 1, 7-11

Tuesday January 9: Weekday First Week in Ordinary Time 1 Samuel 1: 9-20 Mark 1: 21-28

Thursday, January 11 Weekday 1 Samuel 4: 1-11 Mark 1: 40-45

Friday, January 12 Weekday 1 Samuel 8: 4-7, 10-22a Mark 2: 1-12

Saturday, January 13 St. Hilary, Bishop, Doctor of the Church

1 Samuel 9: 1-4, 17-19, 10:1 Mark 2: 13-17

St. Hilary, a staunch defender of the divin-ity of Christ was a gentle and courteous man, devoted to writing some of the great-est theology on the Trinity, and was like his Master in being labeled a “disturber of the peace.” In a very troubled period in the Church, his holiness was lived out in both scholarship and controversy. He was bishop

of Poitiers in France. Raised a pagan, he was converted to Christianity when he met his God of nature in the Scriptures. His wife was still living when he was chosen, against his will, to be the bishop of Poitiers in France. He was soon taken up with battling what became the scourge of the fourth century, Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. When Emperor Constantius ordered all the bishops of the West to sign a condemnation of Athanasius, the great defender of the faith in the East, Hilary refused and was banished from France to far off Phrygia. Even-tually he was called the “Athanasius of the West.” While writing in exile, he was invited by some semi-Arians (hoping for reconciliation) to a council the emperor called to counteract the Council of Nicea. But Hilary predictably defended the Church, and when he sought public debate with the heretical bishop who had exiled him, the Arians, dreading the meeting and its outcome, pleaded with the emperor to send this troublemaker back home. Hilary was welcomed by his people.

Prayer for the Canonization of our Parish Son, The Venerable Michael J. McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor, and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Father Michael J. McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor. Through the example of his life and virtue

may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, ful-filling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast. We humbly ask that you glorify your servant Father Michael J. McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his interces-sion, grant the favor, I now present (here make your request). Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

National Migration Week 2018 January 7-14

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Justice for Immigrants Campaign is working on behalf of the Bishops, including our own Archbishop Leonard P. Blair, to promote humane migration policies towards refugees and immigrants that reflect our Catholic values. To add your voice to this urgent issue, send an electronic message to your lawmakers (see: Justiceforimmigrants.org).

National Migration Week, January 7 – 14, 2018, is an opportunity to become aware of the millions of God’s children fleeing war, persecution and poverty and to share their journey by walking with them in prayer and support.

In the words of Pope Francis: “Closeness to the poor, the refugee, the immigrant, the sick, the exploited, the elderly living alone, prisoners and all God’s other poor, will teach us a different way of resting, one which is more Christian and generous.”

Worldwide Marriage Encounter of Connecticut Marriage Encounter is designed to give mar-

ried couples the opportunity to examine their

lives together . . . a time to share their feel-

ings, hopes, disappointments, joys and frus-

trations . . . and to do so openly and honestly

in a face-to-face, heart-to-heart encounter

with the one person they have chosen to live with for the rest of

their lives.

The emphasis of the Marriage Encounter weekend is on communi-

cation between husband and wife, who spend a weekend together

away from the distractions and tensions of everyday life, to concen-

trate on each other. The encounter weekend teaches a communica-

tion technique which permits each couple to explore important ar-

eas of their relationship in a spirit of love and understanding. By

continuing the newly-acquired technique begun on the weekend,

husbands and wives continually grow closer together to live more

joyful and purposeful lives. Please contact the Family Life Office at

860-242-5573 ext. 2690 for dates.

“Every effort should be made to strengthen and develop pastoral care

for the family, which should be treated as a real matter of priority in

the certainty that future evangelization depends largely on the domestic

church.” -Pope John Paul II, Address to the Third Assembly of the

Bishops of Latin America, 28 January 1979

Thanksgiving after Communion (Prayer of St. Thomas Aquinas)

Lord, Father all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank You, for even though I am a sinner,

your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mercy, You have fed me with

the Precious Body & Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.

I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salvation.

May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways

and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience,

humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good.

May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible,

and the perfect calming of all my evil impulses, bodily and spiritual.

May it unite me more closely to you, the One true God, and lead me

safely through death to everlasting happiness with You.

And I pray that You will lead me, a sinner, to the banquet where you,

with Your Son and Holy Spirit, are true and perfect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy,

gladness without end, and perfect happiness to your saints. Grant this through Christ our Lord,

AMEN.
