Praise God foe Second Chances “He said to him in reply, “Sir, leave it for this year

also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and

fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you

can cut it down.” Luke 13:8-9

This conversation between the landowner and the gardener makes me want to weep. I could have been that tree, chopped down without hesitation. God could have let me be defined by my times of departure or periods of lukewarm faith. After all, I wasn’t doing much for his field other than taking up sun, water and space, and bearing no fruit. But in his kindness he granted me the respite of time, the merciful gift of a second chance. He was the pa-tient gardener who tended to my roots and pruned my branches and waited for me. In the fertile ground of humility, I took nourishment and my clipped branches began to blossom. Now I am a tree that bears fruit. Let’s praise God for second chances. Let’s be slow to judge the value or condition of other trees. Kristin Arm-

7. Barley - Looking for ways to get the whole grain servings recommened in the new federal dietary guidelines? (Six to 13 servings of grains depending on your caloric intake, of which at least half should come from whole grains.) Try cooking up some barley - also a good source of iron & minerals - in place of white rice. But make sure you’re buying whole-grain barley, not the “pearl” variety with the healthful outer husk removed. Whole grains have been associated with protection against heart disease & cancer, & may help control diabetes. Other good whole-grain choices of this type include bulgur, buckwheat groats (kasha), millet & quinoa. 8. Beef Eye of Round - While studies continue to suggest it’s smart to limit your red-meat consumption, when you’ve gotta have beef, eye of round is the lean-est protein & just 160 calories. Beef is a good source of zinc & vitamin B6.

Father’s NotesFather’s NotesFather’s NotesFather’s Notes Sunday Mass still obligatory? I’ve heard in recent years that one need not go to

Mass on Sunday unless it is “meaningful.” Attending

Mass is only a matter of “substantive” obedience, it

is said. If you’re not getting out of it what you think

you should, don’t go, and don’t worry about it.

A short time ago, however, I read again that we may

miss Mass only for a serious reason. Has that teach-

ing changed? I’m a convert, so I don’t know a lot of

things.

Attendance at the Sunday Eucharist is a serious obli-gation for Catholics for reasons that far transcend the fact that it is a church law. This obligation binds us unless we are excused from it for a proportionately serious reason. What, precisely, such a reason would be must be de-termined ultimately by the individual himself in the light of his overall respect for & observance of this obligation. “Substantive” obedience to the Sunday Eucharist regulation simply means that when one is otherwise faithful to that responsibility, he need not worry or feel guilty when, on occasion, something - a vacation, unusually exhausting work, and so on - makes it exceptionally difficult or inconvenient to get to Mass. The question of attending Mass only when one “gets something out of it” is another matter. Contrary to what certain psychological experts seem to tell us, there is nothing wrong at some point in our lives in doing something because someone says we must. It is an essential part of our maturing process to act in cer-tain matters simply because someone important to us (parent, teacher, priest, church) says, “It’s good for you. Do it.” We all go through this. It’s one of the steps we take toward making values our own - or, if you wish, doing a thing because “I get something out of it.” Surely there’s something spiritually incomplete in a 30 or 50-year-old Catholic who hasn’t long ago passed the point where he goes to Mass only because the church says he must. His problem isn’t, however, that he once went for that reason. Every child or teen-ager has gone or will go to church for that reason somewhere along the line. The mature adult’s tragedy is that he was never helped to grow beyond it, a de-scription which sadly fits too many Catholics today. Catholic Q & A by Fr. John J. Dietzen

Dear friends, Last Sunday was the Feast Day of St. Nicholas, as many of you know. But did you know that the chil-dren at religious instruction class were treated to a special presentation about this kind and giving Saint? Many of you may assume Derick Heisler is a quiet 9th grade altar server who sometimes lectors when needed at the monthly youth Mass. Well, last Sunday he presented the life of Saint Nicholas by dressing up in costume, wig, cape and staff! He told stories about the Saint’s life and even posed for a group picture before handing out special gin-gerbread cookies to the children. Many thanks to Derick for enriching our CCD class time! Our parish has evolved over the years into a thoughtful and considerate parish family. Every week I hear of church members reaching out to help others in so many ways. And just like the chil-dren learned last Sunday about St. Nicholas, you are giving indiscriminately. Thank you to those taking part in our Annual Giving Tree project. Please make sure all presents are returned by Dec. 20th. The monthly card party was extra special with the Christmas theme. Thank you to Claire Gibbons, for the Christmas Trivia Contest. I thought the most fun question was, “What does Alvin want for Christmas?” Do you know? The young family event last Sunday after Mass was attended by 7+ families and it was a fun time to chat, create a gingerbread house and listen to Christmas music. Thank you Kelly Browning for coordinating this event! Please call the church of-fice and update your correct email address if you are not receiving the weekly emails on young fam-ily fellowship events. Our Feast Day Mass was quite a spiritual and joy-ful celebration. Edilu and Walter Hunt did another great job coordinating the reception afterwards for over 50 people. Thank you to the many who volun-teered at Mass, baked the yummy treats, or donated a bottle of wine for the celebration. I especially liked everyone joining together for the parish toast to the Year of Mercy that began on Dec. 8. Have a stress free week as we count down the days until Christmas! Peace!~Mary Wentlent
