From the Desk of the Pastor April 16, 2017The Sacrament of Confirmation

Next Week: Divine Mercy Sunday - The Second Sunday of Easter1st Reading: Acts 2:42-47 • 2nd Reading: 1 Peter 1:3-9 • Gospel: John 20:19-31

Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord

Second Reading: Colossians 3:1-4This section of the letter to the Colossians is referred to as the “Mystical Death and Resurrection.” It reminds us that we are with Christ and must attend to spiritual (rather than earthly) goals.

First Reading: Acts 10:34a, 37-43During this Easter Season, the first reading will come from the New Testament. The Acts of the Apostles, written by St. Luke, tells the story of the earliest days of the Church – the community of people who shaped the tradition of the Church, drawing from both their Jewish traditions and what they learned from Christ Himself. In this reading, St. Peter referenced both the Resurrection and the forgiveness from sins.

Gospel: John 20:1-9There are some slight differences between the Resurrection accounts of the different Gospels. In St. John’s version, it seems as if Mary of Magdala went to the tomb alone In St. Matthew’s version, “Mary Magdalene and the other Mary…” went to the tomb. In St. Mark’s account, there were three women: Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome. Similarly, St. Luke mentioned three women: Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the Mother of James.

What is clear is that all were astounded and confused, that none of the writers were actually with Mary Magdalene and her female companions; and that she is the one they all remembered.

Mission StatementWith the Eucharist as our source, Mary as our patroness and the Holy Spirit as our guide, we the Roman Catho-lic Parish of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady, Tuckahoe, seek to give meaning to our faith by following Christ’s command to care for His people, by fostering actions that nourish both the spiritual and

social needs of our people and build community within and without our parish.

As I write this article, we are in the last weeks of preparation for our young people in the 8th Grade, who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in three ceremonies. Bishop Gerald Walsh will be conferring the Sacrament this year. Along with those who received Confirmation at the Easter Vigil, we have over 90 confirmandi this year.

Of the Seven Sacraments instituted by Christ, Confirmation is probably the one that is least known or appreciated. That is understandable, because it focuses on the working of the Holy Spirit, who is often the forgotten person of the Trinity. The Sacrament of Confirmation can be described as the Sacrament of spiritual maturity. It enriches the soul of the person with deep graces of the Spirit. Confirmation is the Sacrament that calls recipients to witness, coura-geously, the gift of faith by word and, especially, by the example of their lives.

This Sacrament harkens back to the great Pentecost event (Acts: 2), when the disciples were huddled in the upper room and the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus had promised them, came upon them in the form of a mighty wind and tongues of fire. The disciples gathered there had been commanded by Jesus to take the good news of His death and resurrec-tion to the ends of the earth. Pentecost was the moment of their confirmation.

The basic effects of Confirmation are: a) it roots us more deeply in our relationship with God; b) it unites us more firmly with Christ, and reminds us that every Sacrament we receive is an encounter with Jesus himself; c) it increases in us the gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Knowledge, Piety, Fortitude and Fear of the Lord; d) it strengthens our bond to the Church; e) it gives us strength to spread and defend the faith by word and deed.

The Oil of Chrism used in the Sacrament symbolizes strength given to profess one’s faith in difficulty. The laying on of hands by the bishop is the symbol of the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the person. Few, if any, of us may live in circumstances that demand we lay down our lives for our beliefs.

At the Easter Vigil, I administered the Sacrament of Confirmation for all of our adults and teens in the RCIA program. It is always a privilege as the Pastor to confer this Sacrament of the Holy Spirit. May all of us, who were confirmed or are candidates, use the gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit for the good of the Church.

Revive with UsMonday, May 1 – Wednesday, May 1-3

at 6:00 PMRevive is a three-night event coming to Immaculate Conception Church and other locations throughout the Archdiocese. We will explore the fundamental questions, “What are we living for? What is God’s purpose for our lives?” Join us and others in our Catholic community to reflect and listen to diverse voices discuss their faith journeys – and go home re-freshed and ready to put your faith into action.

On nights one and two, we will enjoy music, listen to a special reflection from one of the inspiring priests of our religious orders, and hear from members of our own communities about overcoming life’s chal-lenges through faith and perseverance; you also will be invited to participate in the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation. On night three, we will celebrate a com-munity Mass – and for those in need, offer the Sacra-ment of the Anointing (Anointing of the Sick).

85. What does it mean to be a registered parishioner? It is sad when we find many Catholics who simply go through the motions as a Catholic. They at-tend Mass, receive the Sacraments, become beneficiaries of the services provided by the parish, and seem to have certain expectations about what’s in it for them, yet have minimal appreciation of how things such as the Sacraments, education, formation, lights, heating, cooling, cleanliness, supplies, maintenance, support groups, and a variety of important ministries and services, are be-ing provided.

Along with these expectations, there seems to be an emerging attitude that we are entitled to all these services and benefits without any generous, sacrificial, and proportionate commitment re-sponse in gratitude on our part.

What is the root cause of this growing culture, this expectation of service? Research and experi-ence within the United States and beyond suggests there is a serious lack of spiritual formation and understanding of what is expected of Christians in response to their Baptismal call to discipleship, where stewardship, that of discipleship in action, is understood, practiced and lived as being “The grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and received God’s gifts and shares these gifts in love of God and neighbor.”

What does it mean to be a registered parishioner? What are the expectations?A parishioner can be defined as: “One who is registered and actively participates in the liturgical/pastoral life of the parish through the generous, sacrificial and proportionate sharing of his or her God-given giftedness of time, talent and treasure.”

As a Catholic and registered parishioner of a parish, I am expected to:

Regularly attend and participate in Sunday Mass – preferably as a family; Regularly participate in the sacramental life of the Church; Develop and practice an ongoing personal/family prayer life; Witness to the teachings of the Church by one’s manner of living life; Seek to understand and practice what it means to be and live as an active and committed Christian

steward in service to the parish and the wider universal Church; Commit annually to a generous, sacrificial and proportionate commitment of one’s time, talent and

treasure in service to the broad mission of the parish and the wider universal Church without count-ing the cost or having any expectation of something in return;

Recognize, understand and accept my need to regularly give and share rather than giving and sharing only when there happens to be a need; and

Acknowledge, as a registered parishioner, that I am to be a participant in serving the mission of the parish rather than being only a spectator.

Realize the necessary and ongoing importance of love, generosity, faith and family.

If you have questions about any aspect of our Catholic Church and Faith, just drop us a note or call and we will answer them to the best of our ability.
