 High in the Sky 

1 Costa Rica, located in Central America, is home to many beautiful rainforests. Monteverde is one of the seven wonders of Costa Rica. High up in the mountains, Monteverde’s Cloud Forest Reserve is a popular tourist attraction. This majestic rainforest is a haven for many unique plants and wildlife.  

2 Monteverde, a small town in the mountains of Costa Rica, sits 4,662 feet above sea level. This causes it to be misty, humid, and windy most of the year. It also receives a large amount of rainfall each year. The Cloud Forest gets its name from the clouds that settle among the tree tops. The moisture gives life to the species living there.

3 Over 100 species of mammals live in the Cloud Forest. For example, a howler monkey is often heard. A grey fox may be searching for food. A puma and jaguar try to avoid people. However, they have been sighted before. A three-toed sloth may be slowly climbing a tree.  

4 The Cloud Forest is a birdwatcher's delight! There are 400 kinds of birds in the forest. A hummingbird garden is home to 30 different species. Also, a toucan’s colorful beak is hard to miss. However, there is one bird that gets a lot of attention, the quetzal. It is famous in Monteverde because it only appears during certain times of the year. The quetzal has a very unique look. Its tail feathers are a little over three feet long. Most of its body is covered in shiny green feathers. The male quetzal has a bright red chest. Although the quetzal is rarely seen, it is a sight to see! 

5 Along with the variety of wildlife, there are 2,500 species of plants. Of those, 420 are orchids. The orchids come in many colors and sizes. Other plants like bromeliads, ferns, vines, and mosses are vital to the forest. These plants give food to thousands of insects and moths. The 1,200 types of reptiles and amphibians depend on them, too.

A Great President

1 Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born in 1882, in Hyde Park, New York. He later attended Harvard University and Columbia Law School. He married his wife, Eleanor, in 1905. Franklin had a remarkable career in politics. He was elected to the New York Senate in 1910. President Wilson appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Navy, and he was the Democratic nominee for Vice President in 1920. 

2 In 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President of the United States. This was to be the first of four terms in office. He was a very strong and determined man. He didn't let anything stop him, not even his handicap. 

 

 

3 Franklin D. Roosevelt got polio in 1921, and it left him paralyzed from his waist down. He fought to regain use of his legs, particularly through swimming. He often used crutches in public, but privately, he mostly used a wheelchair. The news media protected his privacy. They rarely took pictures of him in his wheelchair. When they did, they almost always showed him from his waist up. In fact, many Americans were not even aware of his disability.

1 The year was 1826, and Thomas Jefferson was over eighty years old. His red hair had turned white. He was nearing the end of a long and happy life. Old age allowed him plenty of time to think. As he watched the sun set behind distant hills, he thought about the events of his life.

2 Thomas Jefferson was born in 1743. As a young boy, Jefferson was very bright. He enjoyed learning and studied hard in school. He spoke four languages by the time he was ten years old. By twenty, he had mastered the violin. He studied many subjects simply because he liked to learn. 

3 In 1775, the American colonies fought against Britain in the Revolutionary War. Many colonists wanted to be free from the English King’s laws. Jefferson agreed and supported the war. He wrote the Declaration of Independence which marked the separation from Britain, as well as the birth of the United States.  

4 Jefferson also served in the General Assembly. While there, he wrote many important laws. One of the most important was called the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom. This law stated that people should be free to worship however they liked. The law also said that government should not establish an 

 official religion. It was the first law of its kind in the entire world.

5 After a few years in the General Assembly, Jefferson moved to France. He lived in Paris for four years and befriended many famous people. He also learned about a new type of food which is now called ice cream. Jefferson was one of the first people to bring the tasty treat back to America. 

6 In 1800, Jefferson was elected as the third President of the United States. Three major events took place during his eight years in office. In 1803, he bought Louisiana from France. This doubled the size of the young United States. A year later, Jefferson sent a team of people to explore the new lands. The team was led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They traveled all the way to the Pacific Ocean and back. Finally, in 1807, Jefferson made it illegal to import new slaves into the country. Owning slaves, however, remained legal.

7 After Jefferson left the White House, he often thought about his youth. He was thankful for the education he received. He wanted others to have the same opportunities to learn. He dreamed of a school where common people would be free to study what they wanted. He spent years planning the school. In 1819, Jefferson opened the University of Virginia. Today, people from all over the world attend the school.  

8 Jefferson spent the last years of his life at his home in Monticello. In quiet moments, he reflected on the past. “I want to be remembered for what I gave the people,” he said. Thomas Jefferson gave all the American people many gifts.

The Mail’s Got to Go Thru!  

 

 

1 A new kind of mailman was being recruited. The new nation was quickly expanding. Almost half a million settlers lived in the western states. They hungered for news of the relatives and friends they had left behind in the East. Steamship mail took up to six weeks to arrive. Ships sailed down the Atlantic coast from New York to the Isthmus of Panama. Mail sacks had to be moved across the Isthmus by railroad. Then they were flung onto another ship. It sailed up the Pacific coast to San Francisco, California. Stagecoach mail also provided regular communication between the East and West. Stages took a safer route to the south. Mail took an average of three weeks by stagecoach.  

2 With the motto “The mail’s got to go thru!”, the Pony Express Company proposed to cover the distance between St. Louis, Missouri and Sacramento, California, in ten days! How could they achieve this incredible feat? The company believed that a central route was better than the longer, southern one. Many people were skeptical that the company could back up its claim. “Ten days!” they cried with disbelief. “Impossible! It simply can’t be done!” The Pony Express did launch its service on April 3, 1860. It proved them wrong! 

 

 

3 The route began in St. Joseph, Missouri, where the country’s railroads ended. It extended for 1,966 miles. First it followed the Oregon Trail into Wyoming. Then riders swung south of the Great Salt Lake. They headed due west across the Salt Desert to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Finally, they rode into Sacramento.  

4 The Pony Express route was a relay race against time. There were 190 relay stations along the route. Here a rider would trade in his exhausted horse for a fresh mount. He rode to the next relay station and quickly traded again. A rider might change horses as many as five times before he reached his “home” station. Once there he would pitch the mail bags to a new rider. This man would spur his horse toward the next station. Like the baton in a relay race, the mail was transported across the desert and mountains.  

5 On October 24, 1861, the Pony Express went out of business. It was no longer needed. Telegraph lines had been raised all over the country. Messages could be sent from coast to coast instantly over the telegraph wires.   

6 The Pony Express operated for 18 months. Pony Express riders covered 650,000 miles, but the mail was lost only one time. It helped settlers feel less isolated from their family and friends in the East. Over 150 years have passed since these brave men and boys rode the trails, but they continue being reminders of the true pioneer spirit.
