Calhoun Choir alumni pay tribute to Talbot Thayer
One fair day, one spectacular day!
They came from Oregon,Washington State, Iowa, Texas,Florida, Georgia and the tri-state area;they graduated Calhoun in the ’60s,’70s and ’80s. They made this jour-ney home to see old friends, to join insong and pay tribute to their highschool Choir Director S. TalbotThayer.
Everyone had different experi-ences in relationship to this director. But all would say though that hegave them tremendous gifts thatthey cherish to this day.
They gathered on Saturday,September 8. Starting time was 7:30p.m. but many showed up early asthey didn’t want to considered late.Within minutes of Mr. Thayer’sarrival, over 150 voices joined in songand the mood was set for the night.

Mepham – 75 years and counting...The celebration of Mepham High
School’s 75th Anniversary jam packs aweek of enthusiasm, spirit and purepirate pride. With the participation ofstudents, teachers, parents and commu-nity, past, present and future, it shouldsure be a celebration to remember.
The festivities kicked off on Sunday,September 9, where all alumni werewelcomed back to what was their sec-ond home and enjoyed presentations inthe auditorium as well as a performanceby the jazz band. After, they continuedwith a tea party in the library, and cutthe red ribbon on the new restorationproject that the Alumni Associationfunded this summer.
As the day activities came to aclose people remembered the impor-tance, pride and tradition the alumniinstilled in the school years past theirgraduation date.
The celebration continues all weeklong as the student body participates inwhat has always been an annual tradi-tion. From the start of the week, stu-dents are dressing in the assigned themebrought to them by the StudentGovernment. It was acceptable for stu-dents to wear pajamas on Monday, bemismatched on Tuesday, and have atwin on Wednesday. They can representtheir favorite sports team on Thursdayand proudly show off the school colorson Friday.
Students will conclude the day with
Friday Night Lights, as Mepham has itsfirst nighttime pep rally in manyyears. That night there will be agirls’ varsity game at 5 p.m., aboys’ varsity soccer game at 7:30p.m. and in between a pep rally at6:45 p.m. that will be lit up withbursting spirit.
This all leads up to what joinsthe past and the present, studentsand alumni, Homecoming. OnSaturday, September 15, the paradewill kick off the day at noon. Classfloats and Mepham’s band, kick-line and cheerleaders will all be apart of it as the parade leads theway to the Homecoming footballgame. The Mepham varsity foot-ball team will then battle againstcrosstown rival Kennedy, starting at1:30 p.m.
During this time food and apparelwill be sold. Town businesses andschool clubs will be out and about fornot only the Mepham community butthe Bellmore-Merrick community aswell. The celebration will come to aclose with a carnival from 3-6 p.m. Thisfamily fun event takes place in the backof the football field and will truly sumup the 75 years of spirit.
The preparations for this event startedlast year with the Site Based Committee, ideas bounced around and it continuedwith some people meeting to plan in thesummer days. This event was funded by
some of the donations from clubs atMepham as well as the AlumniAssociation. Now this week all the timeand effort will be worthwhile for the cel-ebration of our community.
As the principal, Michael Harrington, gave all of the information about this
well anticipated celebration, he com-mented, “I am most proud of Mephamin its 75 years. You can clearly see whathas been accomplished throughout theyears. It is about connecting the pastand present…”

75 YEARS OF PIRATE PRIDE: Mepham High Schoolkicked off a week of celebrations on Sunday whenalumni joined students for an afternoon of festivities.More activities are planned all week for students.
Principal Michael Harrington
by Laura Schofer
The state Department of EnvironmentalConservation (DEC) is proposing a newplan to clean-up remaining contaminant'sin the groundwater beneath and near by theBusy Bee Cleaners on Merrick Road inMerrick. This is a voluntary cleanup pro-gram and follows another cleanup effort atthe site during the 1990s.
The Busy Bee site, at 1818 MerrickRoad between Montauk Avenue and BeachDrive in Merrick, has been a dry cleaningfacility since the 1970s.
According to DEC documents, the facil-ity released dry cleaning waste – tetra-choloroethylene – (PCE) which causedsoil, soil vapor and groundwater contami-nation at the site. A soil vapor extractionsystem was installed in August of 1994 andoperated through April 1996.
Bill Fonda, spokesman for the DEC,told Merrick Life the “system put in place
in the 1990s didn’t address groundwatercontamination on or off the site, which thisplan will remediate,” he said.
Robert Bernstein, owner of Busy BeeCleaners, said he has “worked for manyyears with the DEC and will take the nextstep to address the groundwater issue.”
The DEC has issued a proposed remedi-al action work plan to cleanup the site andis seeking public comment. This pro-posed plan will treat groundwater contam-inated with volatile organic compounds(VOCs) using air sparging, a soil vaporextraction system and chemical oxidationtechnology.
Air sparing is a process that physicallyremoves contaminant's from the ground-water by injecting air into a well that hasbeen installed into the groundwater.
The VOCs are carried with the injectedair into a vadose zone – an area below theground surface but above the water table –where a soil vapor extraction system
removes the injected air. The injected air isthen treated with activated carbon beforebeing released into the atmosphere.
Additionally, a chemical oxidationprocess will be used to treat anotherVOC – chlorinated ethene compounds –found in the groundwater. As the chemi-cal oxidant comes into contact with thecontaminant, a reaction occurs thatbreaks down the contaminant into car-bon dioxide and water.
The DEC is accepting written com-ments on this proposed plan for a 30 dayperiod which began on September 10through October 10. The plan is avail-able for public review at the reference
desk of the North Merrick PublicLibrary, 1691 Meadowbrook Road.
“We will review the public’s comments, address the public’s concerns and thenissue a final document for cleanup,” saidMr. Fonda. “It is then up to the owner toimplement the cleanup.”
“We will move forward as soon asthe DEC approves the plan,” said Mr.Bernstein.
Comments and questions should be sentto Robert Decandia, Department ofEnvironmental Conservation; Division ofEnvironmental Remediation; 625Broadway; Albany, NY 12233-7015.

Residents in county Legislator DaveDenenberg’s 19th District left no stoneunturned as they voiced their com-plaints about community policing andquality of life issues at his communitymeeting on Thursday, at the NorthMerrick Public Library.
Legislator Denenberg’s invited guestswere Problem-Oriented Policing (POP)unit night shift Sergeant John Barrett andplainclothes Sergeant Michael O’Maraof the First Precinct in Baldwin; andnight shift Sergeant Burt Fried of theSeventh Precinct in Seaford.
The consolidation of the two
precincts is on track for November 1,after which the Seventh Precinct willbe called the First Precinct.
Legislator Denenberg, who was presentfor only a short portion of the meeting, between other obligations, was adamantabout reminding those present that hevoted against the reduction in NassauCounty precincts from eight to four.
“The number of patrols are keyed intothe number of precincts,” Mr. Denenbergexplained. “And that’s your finaldefense. It’s getting more difficult torespond, and I don’t like it.”
Mr. Denenberg complained that theSeventh Precinct is running out of room

Dress for successBellmore’s Brett Cohen has put himself and his
hometown on the map with his prank on passersbyin Times Square some weeks ago.
At first, the YouTube video shows him hangingaround the same area in a T-shirt. Then you see himemerge from a building with a button-down shirt, greased hair, sunglasses and most importantly, anentourage of bodyguards and camera men.Suddenly, everybody thinks he must be famous.
The main message of the video is how easyit is to fool people. But the flip side is howimportant it is to dress for success. Because somany famous or rich people dress casuallythese days, young people may get the idea thatthey can too. And that can hurt them in theirefforts to impress possible employers.
Just as sports teams have uniforms, manyplaces of employment do too, whether it is whiteshirt and tie or business casual. Even businesscasual requires certain brands and styles.Always, good grooming and cleanliness areimportant.
When you dress for success you will beamazed what can happen.
Happy New YearNext week, our Jewish readers will be
observing the New Year, often walking to tem-ple for services. This is a time of celebration, ofrededication, of gathering with family andfriends.
We wish all a very Happy New Year, and wethank our local temple members and spiritualleaders for all they do to make our communitya better place in which to live.

and officers are now being housed in$300,000 trailers. In addition, the SeventhPrecinct only has one holding cell, with amaximum capacity of four.
“The First Precinct ranks first in arrestsin the county,” said Mr. Denenberg, claim-ing that it was irresponsible for CountyExecutive Mangano to cut the number ofprecincts in half.
Legislator Denenberg criticized Mr.Mangano for continuing to reduce thecounty’s police force from 2,700 to“twenty-three-and change” over the pastthree years, which he said jeopardizespublic safety despite a documentedincrease in violent crime.
Mr. Denenberg also condemned thecounty executive for his elimination of spe-cial patrols such as Problem-OrientedPolice, Heroin Taskforce, Anti-Gang Unit,DWI, plainclothes and traffic enforcement.“These officers are here to do the best theycan for you,” Mr. Denenberg pointed out.
Sergeant Barrett presented summercrime statistics regarding burglaries andauto larcenies. In the First Precinct, north
of Sunrise Highway, 11 auto thefts andfive burglaries were reported in theMerrick area alone. Of the 11 auto thefts, eight vehicles were unsecured –unlocked, with open windows or withkeys in the ignition – and three vehicleswere broken into. Sergeant Barrett com-mented that the eight unsecured vehicleswas “unacceptable.”
In the Seventh Precinct, south of sun-rise, there were 14 burglaries and 25 autolarcenies this summer (of the 25, sixwere in Merrick, eight in Bellmore and11 in Wantagh). It was reported that theeastern part of Nassau County has seenan uptick in burglaries due to drug usersneeding fast cash. Several of the burgla-ries have also been “inside jobs” by daylaborers working in unoccupied homes.
Sergeant O’Mara advised the audienceto take appropriate actions to avoid bur-glaries, such as removing window air con-ditioning units, which can be pushed in togain entry into the house; locking slidingglass doors; and asking your neighbors tokeep an eye on your house.
If you are going to the gym, he said, be
sure to never leave your valuables withinplain sight inside the car; hide them awaybefore you get to the gym parking lot.
Jack Cohen, a Merrick resident for 43years, noted a “change in the style of liv-ing” in his community.
He complained about the big trucks onBabylon Turnpike and Merrick Avenue,
double-parking on Merrick Road, vehiclesblocking intersections, and inconsistentparking signs. He also complained of aneighbor whose house had “stadiumlights” and who used a fire pit that made itimpossible for him to open a window. Hereferred to the decline in the standards of

Community concerns
Nassau County as “creeping Queensism.”Sergeant Fried agreed that in his 35
years living in Nassau County, he’s seen atremendous change: more cars registered, properties sold and subdivided, and everypiece of vacant land developed. “It’s achanging world, and one good thing canbring about two bad things,” he said.
Sergeant Fried blamed many oftoday’s problems on young people whohave no self-respect. “If you have noself-respect, you can’t respect yourneighbors,” he asserted.
Tom Carroll of North Merrick com-plained he could not back out of hisdriveway due to vehicles not making fullstops at signs on Old Mill Road. He alsonoted that trash was being thrown out ofcars onto the street.
A of Merrick resident griped aboutspeeding on weekends on KennyAvenue between Merrick Road andSunrise Highway.
One resident’s complaints centeredaround the loud noise from motorcy-cles. Another, who lives in SouthMerrick, complained about people park-ing cars at night and urinating in publicat the Town of Hempstead fishing pierat the end of Merrick Avenue. Heclaimed that it was useless to callpolice; the sergeants present respondedthat their job was to prioritize 911 calls.
Claudia Borecky, the president of theNorth and Central Merrick CivicAssociation, and William Pezzulo, presi-dent of the board of trustees of the NorthMerrick Public Library, both commentedon the need for a better police presence atschool crossings on Merrick Avenue. InApril of this year, a crossing guard was hitby a car near Old Mill Road School onMerrick Avenue at Old Mill Road.
“When you guys sit there in a carwearing a uniform, this will stop,” saidMr. Pezzulo, whose own child was hitby a car on her way to school. “We willtake this to the inspector. This stuffcan’t go on anymore.”
Sergeant Barrett said he would send adirective to watch for traffic violationsnear the Merrick schools.
A representative from LegislatorDenenberg’s office brought up the pointthat some issues are town matters, rather than 911 matters. The Town ofHempstead has its own code of enforce-ment division, so if, for example, youhave a complaint about bright lights, you should call the Town ofHempstead’s Buildings Department. The Town of Hempstead’s main phonenumber is 489-5000.
Jessica Tauber, also representingLegislator Denenberg, assured the audi-ence that they could always call Mr.Denenberg’s office, and the legislatorwould make complaint phone calls ontheir behalf, to avoid any hassle.Legislator Denenberg’s district officephone number is 409-8524, and his leg-islative office phone number is 571-6219.
In the end, the point was raised that eventhough they have plenty of complaints, people are hesitant to call 911 for fear ofbothering the police. “You’re doing your-self a disservice by not calling 911,” saidSergeant Fried. Sergeant O’Mara agreed,“We need more people to call 911.”
Residents were warned against trying tohandle unlawful situations themselves.Instead, they should call the police, whohave the expertise to get the job done.
“You should always call 911 if youneed us,” said Sergeant Barrett. “Youhave an accident and you need an acci-dent number? That’s when you go to thestationhouse.”

The most recent Medicaid regulationsnow permit individuals to set aside a portion oftheir assets in an irrevocable trust account inorder to have funds for future funeral expenses.
The process is reasonably simple, and no doubt the most difficult aspect ofit is the recognition that you need to begin making anticipated funeralarrangements for someone near and dear to you.
Questions we've been asked...My mother may soon be applying for Medicaid.
How does this affect funeral arrangements?
What happens is as follows:• A family will make an appointment with us to discuss what kind of
funeral arrangements will be preferred.• We discuss options and record their wishes. The discussion covers
not only the funeral home services but cemetery, church, monument inscription, newspaper notices, etc. We inform the family of exactly what those costs are at the present time.
• Those funds can then be deposited in our FDIC insured PRE-PLAN Trust. This Trust pays sufficient interest to allow us to guarantee the funeral home costs which can be expected to be higher in the future because of inflation.
• While the funds remain in the name of the individual who will be receiving assistance from Medicaid they are not considered an asset which otherwise would affect Medicaid eligibility.
If we can help you with this important matter, call us and our know-ledgeable staff will answer your questions. Moreover, there is no cost or fee involved in establishing a PRE-PLAN Trust.

TOH hosts 9-11 Memorial ServiceThousands of Nassau County resi-
dents gathered on the sands of PointLookout Beach for a sunrise 9-11memorial service on Tuesday. Thiswas the same spot where residentslooked to the west in the wake of theterrorist attacks that fateful day,11years ago.
The memorial service, sponsored bythe Town of Hempstead, is Long
Island’s largest 9-11 ceremo-ny. After a somber, yetuplifting one hour service, residents were invited towrite the names of lovedones who were killed at theWorld Trade Center on the“Heroes of 9-11” panorama.
Attendees were also encour-aged to write personal mes-sages on the tags attached tosmall Americans flags, handedout at the ceremony andplaced at the base ofHempstead Town’s TwinTowers replica. Finally residents castewhite carnations in a reflecting poolunder the World Trade Center beam, apoignant reminder of what was lost.
“I am proud to stand with the familiesof the victims of 9/11, reverend clergy, firefighters and our patriotic residents aswe continue to forge links in ourunbreakable chain of love, eleven yearslater,” said Hempstead Town SupervisorKate Murray.
