superior reputation. As you review this handbook, please know that it is our goal and responsibility to provide a safe environment and to protect every child’s right to reach his or her highest personal

achievement. Your observations and contributions are essential as we develop a stronger middle school program; therefore, if you have questions or concerns at any time, please contact any

Tuckahoe staff member. We sincerely look forward to working with each of you as we continue the Tuckahoe tradition this school year.

Sincerely,TMS Administration

ATTENDANCE Regular school attendance is necessary for students to be successful in their academics and in their school program. Every effort should be made to maintain an excellent record for the entire year. If a student accumulates 5 or more absences, a referral could be made to the Attendance Intervention Team. A doctor’s note will be required for students who have accumulated10 or more absences due to illness during the school year.

If a student is absent from school, a parent should call the school at (804) 673-3792 by 9:00 A.M. to report the absence. Automated phone calls will be made to the parent of every child who has not been called in to verify the absence from class. If parent/guardian has not contacted the school on the day of the absence, then upon returning to school after an absence, you should send a note with your child stating the dates and reason for the absence. Students will give this note to their first block teacher. A note or phone call must be   received within 24 hours of the   absence or your   child’s   absence will be recorded as unexcused.

If a student will be absent for a reason other than what is considered excused in the Code of Conduct, a parent must submit a request in writing, including a parent signature, to the principal at least one week prior to the date of absence in order to have the absence excused.  In accordance with the HCPS Code of Student Conduct, a referral will be made to the Attendance Compliance Team if a child accumulates 5 unexcused absences. Being truant, skipping classes or leaving school without permission during the school day is a violation of the Code of Conduct.

Excused absences include the following: 1. Illness of student2. Serious illness in family which necessitates absence of student3. Death in family4. Special and recognized religious holidays5. Other reasons approved by principal

ARRIVAL/DEPARTURES FROM SCHOOL: No student should arrive at school before 8:05 AM unless prior arrangements have been made with a teacher or administrator. All students should leave school at 3:15 p.m. unless they have made prior arrangements with a teacher or administrator or they are participating in school-sponsored extracurricular activities such as a club meeting or sporting events.

EARLY DISMISSALS:The student will be called to the office as soon as the parent arrives in the main office. All adults will be required to show a picture ID and their name must be listed on the Authorization to Pick-Up Formwhen picking up a student from school. Students will not be dismissed from a bus after the 3:15 P.M. bell. Parents are asked to report to the office prior to 3:00pm for end of the day early dismissals.

When a student must leave school before the end of the school day, a note should be given to the first block teacher at the start of the day. The note should state the reason and time of the dismissal and the location of the student at the time of dismissal.

Students will not be allowed to make arrangements to change transportation after arriving at school without written authorization from a parent. Changes in transportation are not accepted over the phone. HCPS policy requires a parent signature on all transportation changes.

Students must be in attendance at school (not serving an in-school suspension) for at least 2 blocks on a given school day to participate in any extracurricular event later that evening including competing in an athletic event, as a spectator at an athletic event, concert, school dance, etc.

FAMILY TRIPS: Although unnecessary absences from school are discouraged, there may be occasions for absences due to family trips. Prior approval from the principal is necessary if these absences are to be excused. Parents should submit, in writing, a request for absences to be excused to the Attendance Secretary.

REPORTING AN ABSENCE: A parent or guardian is encouraged to call the Attendance Secretary before 9:00 AM to report a student’s absence; an answering machine (804) 673-3792 is in operation to enable reporting of student absences during non-school hours.

TARDIES: If a student arrives after 8:35 A.M., they are considered tardy to school and the cumulative attendance record will reflect this information. Students must check in with the attendance secretary to obtain a pass before going to class..

Tardies are excused under the following circumstances: 1. Court appointment2. Illness of the student3. Medical appointment

*A note or phone call from a parent and/or a note from a doctor/dentist will be required to verify the above.

WALKERS: Parents must give written permission for their students to walk home from school. This note must be given to the first block teacher on the day the student will walk home.

ASSIGNMENT POLICYTeachers measure student mastery through a variety of assignments, ex. homework, classwork, projects, quizzes, and tests. Completion of these assignments is essential for teachers to guide instruction in their classes while supporting students to maximize their learning. Thus, all students will be held accountable for completing all assignments in their classes.

Any student who does not complete assignments will participate in our school intervention plan to hold students accountable for assignment completion. As Responsible Learners:

● Families can receive updates via PowerSchool regarding grades. Work not completed will be recorded on Power School as an “NTI” (Not Turned In) and this will be used as a placeholder until the assignment is returned. An “NTI” is calculated as a zero in the cumulative marking period grade.

● An academic advisor will monitor student athlete’s grades periodically throughout the season, and students may attend a study hall prior to games and or practices in order to complete missing work in order to be eligible to participate.

BUSESAny student wishing to ride a different bus other than the one assigned, or to disembark at a different bus stop other than the one assigned, must have a note dated and signed by a parent. This note should be given to the first block/period teacher at the beginning of the school day. The student will then be given a permission slip that must be presented to the bus driver upon boarding the bus at the end of the school day. Students who are not riding the bus must stay away from the bus area at the end of the day. Any student who demonstrates consistent distracting or disruptive behavior on the bus may lose his/her transportation privileges. Students are reminded that the bus stop

Page 5: Tuckahoe Middle School – Tuckahoe Middle School · Web viewTUCKAHOE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT & PARENT HANDBOOK 2019-2020 Tuckahoe Middle School 9000 Three Chopt Road Henrico, Virginia

is considered school property. Proper behavior is required to, from, and at bus stops and while riding the bus to assure that the rights of others, residential or otherwise are respected.

BUYING OR SELLING OF ITEMS Students are not permitted to sell or buy items unless it involves a school-approved activity or school organization.

CELL PHONE ACCEPTABLE USE POLICYHCPS policy permits students to bring cellphones to school; however, the staff is not responsible for any lost, stolen, or damaged cell phones. Students are allowed to bring and use cell phones after school in the following situations: to call a parent for a ride or in a true emergency situation. The following guidelines are provided in order to clarify expectations and provide guidelines for appropriate use of cell phones. Please see the HCPS Code of Student Conduct for more detailed information. Cell phones may not be on, visible, or in use at any time while on school property prior to 3:15 p.m. Students may not use cell phones after school, including while attending after-school activities (dances, games, intramurals, etc.), for social reasons.Cameras and recording software/hardware are prohibited on school grounds and on the school bus at any time. If a cell phone is misused on the bus, the driver has the right to ban usage of the phone.

Dispositions:

● 1st Occurrence – Warning by teacher

● 2nd Occurrence - Confiscation of phone for remainder of block, parent contacted by person confiscating the phone

● 3rd Occurrence – Confiscation of phone, parent contacted by person confiscating, parent must retrieve the phone from Main Office. Minor Referral to administrator completed for additional consequence possible.

CLINICThe clinic is located in Building 1/Main Office. No “over-the-counter” medication or prescription drugs will be dispensed without written permission from the parent/guardian and physician. Henrico County’s medication policy for prescription and over-the-counter medication forms are available for review and printing on the HCPS website.  The forms must be completed by the parent/guardian and physician as indicated for any medication to be dispensed on school grounds.  All medication must be delivered by a parent/guardian in the original, unopened bottle, it cannot be sent with the child.  Please do not ask the school nurse to make any exceptions to the HCPS policy.  Any questions not answered via the HCPS website may be directed to the school nurse at 673-3793. Should a student become ill while at school, he/she will be sent to the clinic. If parental contact is necessary and the student must go home, the telephone call must come from the clinic. The student will then remain in the clinic until a parent/guardian can come to pick up the child. Students must be free of symptoms of contagious disease (fever, vomiting, diarrhea, suspicious rash, etc.) for 24 hours before returning to school. Students who have been sent home through the clinic with these symptoms may not return to school that day or participate in after-school activities or programs. Medication that is not picked up by the last day of school will be discarded.

DELIVERIES TO STUDENTS DURING THE SCHOOL DAYIn an effort to minimize classroom interruptions during the instructional hours, the main office will not deliver “non-emergency” items to students. Parents may leave items outside the office for students to pick up on their own. However, the school will not notify students or accept any responsibility for items left outside the main office. Parents, this policy provides an opportunity to encourage your child to be responsible about remembering their materials on a daily basis.

HONOR ROLL (MIDDLE SCHOOL) Honor roll is calculated each marking period and each semester as well as for final and cumulative (MP1-MP3) grades.  Students must be taking four academic subjects and may not have a D or an F in any marking period, semester, final, or cumulative grade.

Middle School Honor Roll is based on the grades earned in each marking period. Students must be enrolled in a minimum of five classes to be eligible for honor roll and maintain a 2.7 grade point average for the marking period. Grades earned in 6th Grade Exploratory are not considered when calculating honor roll. Students with a D, F, I (Incomplete), or N (No Grade) in the marking period are not eligible for honor roll.

HONOR CODE/INTEGRITYEach Tuckahoe Middle School student is expected to accept the academic responsibilities associated with his/her classes and to behave in an honorable and respectful manner. Students are expected to do their own work and to accept responsibility for the assigned grade. Copying from someone else’s class work, homework, projects, quizzes, or tests is not acceptable. Violations will result in loss of credit for an assignment and any other appropriate consequences. Honor code violations may include: cheating, plagiarism, falsification (lying, forgery), using an assignment completed for one class in a different class, or an attempt to do any of these things.

HONOR PLEDGE: I have neither given nor received help on this assignment.

MAKE-UP WORKStudents absent from school will have the number of consecutive school days absent plus one for make-up work.

Examples: Absent on Monday: All work due before first block on Thursday

Each teacher shall promptly make missed work available to a student either in person, through the use of schoology or the class homework board (this will vary by teacher). However, the teacher is not required to constantly remind students to turn in such work, nor required to accept it after a specified length of time for its completion. If a student does not see his/her teacher that day, it is the student’s responsibility to get their assignment to that teacher upon his/her return to school during first block. The student should not wait until the following day when their class meets to turn in their work. This policy also applies to school-related absences.

If a student is absent two days or less, the student may get their assignments in the following ways:

•Check with a Study Buddy in each class.•Check the teacher’s online homework board prior to the day they return to school.•Speak directly to the teacher before or after class or school.•Check Schoology for any missing assignments

If a student is absent for three consecutive days, parents may call the School Counseling Office at (804) 673-3723, by 8:30 a.m. and request classwork/homework. Every effort will be made to fulfill this request so the assignments can be picked up after 3:30 p.m. the day the request is made.

It is the student’s responsibility to get all assignments completed. Students absent more than five days will have a maximum of two weeks to make up work missed during their absence, depending on the length and nature of the absence. For extenuating circumstances, please notify your child’s school counselor.

MARCH PROGRAMMARCH is a school initiative to support Henrico Tiered Systems of Support. It is our commitment to provide a positive learning environment for all students. We hope to achieve this goal by educating our learning community on the positive results that occur when students use the following components to guide their choices

Page 8: Tuckahoe Middle School – Tuckahoe Middle School · Web viewTUCKAHOE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT & PARENT HANDBOOK 2019-2020 Tuckahoe Middle School 9000 Three Chopt Road Henrico, Virginia

*Make Responsible Decisions * Act Respectfully * Choose Safe Habits

Students will be recognized when they demonstrate their understanding of these concepts through the following opportunities and procedures:

1. Teachers will reward students with Star-Bucks during the school day. The student’s name will be displayed on school wide bulletin board for recognition. An email to the parent/guardian will go home that day recognizing the student and their specific behavior. The Star-Bucks can be saved by students to use at the TMS Star-Mart.

2. Grade-level teachers will nominate a student that demonstrates desired qualities exemplary of TMS Patriots for Student of the Week. Students will be recognized in the morning announcements, a display board in the front office, and in the weekly Patriot Press.

If a student’s behavior choices are not reflective of this goal the teacher will address the student through the following procedure:

● Teachers will assign the student to complete a “MARCHing Paper” reflecting on his/her behavior choice specific to the component they did not demonstrate. Students will complete this assignment in room 205 and then return to his/her assigned class. Students will share this “MARCHING Paper” with parents on the evening it was assigned. Students should return a signed copy the next school day to the ALC coordinator the next school day.

● Upon receiving three “MARCHing Papers” a student and his/her parents/guardians will be invited to attend “Boot Camp” to conference with an administrator and their school counselor**

● Once a student receives three “MARCHING Papers” and is assigned to “Boot Camp” he/she is no longer eligible for “MARCHing Papers,” and any further infractions will result in an alternate discipline action (Time out, Detention, ALC/RESET, Out-of-School-Suspension)

** “Boot Camp” is an opportunity for students and parents to learn more about our school commitment to maintain a positive learning environment for all. During each session, students and parents will learn more about the components of the program, our school implementation and student participation. As a team we will evaluate the three MARCHing Papers to identify any patterns of behavior. At the completion of Boot Camp, students will be assigned to “Captains Club”. This assignment is a required behavioral support which includes Check-In Check-Out (CICO) and allows you to focus on Making Responsible Decisions, Acting Respectfully, and Choosing Safe Habits.

Captains Club students will meet with their “coaches” at the start and end of each school day to Check-In/Check-Out while setting and evaluating goals set. Your teachers will score your daily performance in each block using the rating scale on the daily CICO document.

We look forward to “MARCHing” togetherTo maintain a positive learning environment for all Patriots!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Each student must participate in physical education. The P.E. fee covers the cost of a lock rental. Students must keep clothing locked in gym lockers during PE class. All other valuables such as money, watches, and jewelry should also be locked in the lockers. When possible, items too large for lockers should not be taken to the gym.

POLICYA copy of the Policies and Regulations Manual of Henrico County Public Schools is available to students, employees, and the public on the HCPS website, www.henricoschools.us. Any person unable to access the online policy may request a copy of a specific policy by contacting the Policy and Constituency Services Specialist at 652-3714.

PowerSchool Parent Portal is a powerful, easy-to-use, secure communication tool connecting teachers, parents and students. Using Pearson’s PowerSchool student information system, the Parent Portal allows collaboration to improve student achievement. Online access to grades, attendance and assignments makes it easier for parents, teachers and students to accurately monitor, identify and accelerate student progress.

SCHOOL COUNSELING - (804) 673-3723School Counselors help with educational planning, explanation of standardized testing, career information, and study/organizational skills. In addition, group and individual counseling is available for any academic, peer, or home concerns.

Students wishing to meet with their counselor may request a teacher’s permission or fill out a request in the School Counseling office. Parents may call or stop by the Counseling Office to make arrangements for an appointment as needed.

SPORTS Interscholastic Sports: The interscholastic athletic program includes the following sports:

Fall Football, Boys Soccer, Girls Tennis, Girls BasketballWinter Boys Basketball, Wrestling, GymnasticsSpring: Track, Boys Tennis, Girls Soccer, Softball, Baseball

Participation is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students who have not reached the age of fifteen (15) on or before August 1 of the school year in which they wish to compete. An additional requirement is that students who wish to play a fall or winter sport must have successfully passed math, English, science, and social studies the preceding school year. Students wishing to participate in gymnastics or a spring sport must have passed math, English, science, and social studies at the end of the previous semester. Students must also have had an athletic physical after May 1 of the previous school year and before the first tryout date. Proof of insurance will also be required of all students trying out for a school sport.

Athletes follow a 1-2-3 Rule:o The result of out-of-school suspension is automatic dismissal from the team. o The result of one assignment to the Alternative Learning Center (ALC) is loss of participation

privileges for the day or days assigned. The second assignment to ALC results in dismissal from the team.

o Three formal detentions will cause an athlete to be dismissed from the team.

Guidelines Pertaining to GPA Requirements for Participation in Middle School Sports:

All middle school student-athletes must maintain a minimum of a 2.0 GPA in addition to passing their four core content area classes. A semester or cumulative GPA may be used to determine eligibility. Sanctions for not meeting the minimum GPA requirement are as follows:

● 6th grade student-athletes will be informed of the 2.0 minimum GPA requirement in an effort to prepare them for participation in athletics in future years.

● 7th grade student-athletes who meet the minimum MSAC requirements will be able to try out and participate with less than a 2.0 GPA. A 7th grade student-athlete cannot participate in competition until his/her grades have increased above a 2.0 GPA. School administrative staff will conduct a grade check two weeks after the season begins to determine full eligibility for those student-athletes with a GPA below 2.0. If the student-athlete’s grades are not above a 2.0 GPA after the fourth week of the season, he/she will be allowed to practice, but will be ineligible to participate in competition for the remainder of the season.

● 8th grade student-athletes must have a minimum 2.0 GPA to try out and participate in middle school and/or high school athletics.

STUDENT SUPPORT & DISCIPLINE

Page 11: Tuckahoe Middle School – Tuckahoe Middle School · Web viewTUCKAHOE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT & PARENT HANDBOOK 2019-2020 Tuckahoe Middle School 9000 Three Chopt Road Henrico, Virginia

For any school to maintain an atmosphere that is conducive to learning, there must first be an environment that is free from distractions, disruptions, and unsafe conditions. For those students who choose to disobey the rules in the classroom, on a school bus, on a field trip or any Henrico-sponsored event, consequences will result. Consequences are administered on a case-by-case basis and applied following the HCPS Student Code of Conduct. The severity and circumstances surrounding each incident will dictate the level of disciplinary response. A first time offense, depending on the disruption to the learning environment and severity of the incident, could result in a warning up to a recommendation for expulsion from Henrico County Public Schools. You should read and follow the HCPS Student Code of Conduct and rules that are specific to Tuckahoe Middle School.

ALC (Alternative Learning Center/In-School Suspension) is the program provided for students who have exhibited misconduct in the regular classroom and an alternative instructional setting is needed on a short-term basis. Our ALC coordinator supervises work completion while students are assigned to ALC. Administrative Detentions are scheduled as needed.

Time-Out (with a MARCHing Paper) is a brief intervention used for students to redirect their attention to learning. Teachers may send students for a Time Out, located in our ALC room. Teachers will contact parents if a student is sent with a MARCHing paper during their class period.

Parents and students are required to read, review, and sign the Henrico County Public Schools Code of Student Conduct.

TECHNOLOGY

Technology & the Internet Technology includes, but is not limited to: computers, electronic devices, software, the Internet, social networks, email, and web pages. All HCPS users are responsible for the appropriate use of all technology to which they have access, even if such use takes place off school property or after school hours. See the HCPS Code of Student Conduct for more detailed information.

Having trouble with your laptop? Do you need help? If you are having software issues with your laptop, try checking out the HCPS Help and Support Center program located in your HCPS Apps folder. It’s a great resource for technology tips, how-to information, and automated fixes. You can also visit the Tech Tips website (http://blogs.henrico.k12.va.us/techtips) for student and parent training documents and videos.

Property of Henrico County Public Schools: You should remember that your laptop is the property of HCPS and is issued to you for instructional use. Please do not draw, color on, or remove your name tag or other security tags. Any attempt to deface or destroy a laptop or tamper with its software configuration will result in disciplinary actions.

Think before you link: Your internet usage is logged and can be viewed at any time while at school. Each website you visit is stored in the history and cannot be erased whether you are at home or at school. Any sites you visit should be school-related. Computers are monitored on a daily basis while at school. Any questionable content will be reviewed and parents will be notified of anything not school-related and may result in disciplinary action.

Gaming: Gaming during school hours is not permitted unless you have received special permission to visit an educational gaming site by a teacher.

Charge your battery: Your battery should be fully charged at home the night before you return to school. Be sure to bring your charger and your laptop to school every day so you can recharge your battery in case the battery gets low.

Page 12: Tuckahoe Middle School – Tuckahoe Middle School · Web viewTUCKAHOE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT & PARENT HANDBOOK 2019-2020 Tuckahoe Middle School 9000 Three Chopt Road Henrico, Virginia

Fixing the Date and Time: It is normal for your date and time to be wrong when you are away from school. The laptop will automatically set the date and time as long as you are connected to the school network. Restart your laptop at school; in about 10 minutes your date and time will be fixed.

Backup your work: You should backup your work every day! In case of a hard drive malfunction, you will have a backup copy of your work. Backing-up is normally quick and very easy. You may back-up your work to your Google Drive folder, a personal flash drive, or to your backup folder on the student server (up to 3 GB). Please note that Windows Desktop Sync is not a substitute for routine backup of user data. If you are unsure of how to back-up your work, please ask your teacher or go to the Help Desk.

Help Desk: The Help Desk is located in the Library and is open to help! Before taking your laptop to the Help Desk, you should ask your teacher for permission. If possible, be sure to back up your work before visiting the Help Desk. The Help Desk is normally open daily from  8:00 a.m.-10:05 a.m., directed study (10:55-11:40) and from 1:45 p.m. -3:15 p.m.

TRANSPORTATION

Our staff and drivers are committed to maintaining a safe transportation program! Riding the bus is a privilege and should not be abused. You must ride the bus you have been assigned to ride. In order to ride a different bus, students must bring a note from a parent to the main office prior at the start of the school day. The note should contain the bus number and name of the student with whom they are riding as well as a contact number for the parent. Due to overcrowding, some buses may not allow guest passengers.  Students will not be allowed to make arrangements to change transportation after arriving at school without written authorization from a parent. Changes in transportation are not accepted over the phone. HCPS policy requires a parent signature on all transportation changes. Appropriate behavior is expected on the bus. This guarantees the safety of all passengers. The Henrico County Public Schools Code of Student Conduct applies from the time students leave their front door, at the bus stop, on the bus, at school, and the trip home in the afternoon.

WALKERS/BIKE-RIDERSA student walking or riding a bike to and from school should have a note signed by a parent/guardian giving the student permission to walk or ride. If the student walks on a regular basis, the note should be given to the attendance secretary. A permanent walker’s pass will be created for the student and the original note will be kept on file. Any student with an assigned bus and bus stop will not be permitted to walk home without a note from a parent/guardian.

WHO DO I SEE/WHERE DO I GO/WHO DO I CONTACT IF….I am having a problem on the bus?
