First Reading: Wisdom 18:6-9We look back to the original Passover, when the Jews had foreknowledge of what would happen and instructions on how to avoid the vengeance of the Angel of Death. The fate of the Egyptians stood in stark contrast to that of the Jews.

Second Reading: Hebrews 11:1-2,8-19This reading centers on faith. Like the Jews in the 1st reading, Abraham had faith in what was promised by God. In the 1st reading, it was freedom from the Egyp-tians. In this reading, it recalls God’s promise of a great nation of descendants - even if Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son, Isaac.

Gospel: Luke 12:32-48You also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come. The message in this reading is clear: we must always be ready for our time of judgment and we must always be vigilant so that we can properly discern the Will of God and occupy ourselves with doing it.

From the Desk of the Pastor August 7, 2016No Vacation from Sunday Mass

During the summer, parents understandably want to get an early start on enjoying their Sundays by visiting relatives, enjoying the recreational places in our community, or just traveling. However, let us never forget the importance of Sunday Mass each week. It is easy to fall into the temptation of just letting Sunday Mass slip by. “We are too busy today,” or “we’ll make Mass next week,” can become easy excuses. This is a special plea to parents to make sure their families come to Mass every Sunday. Make time for Mass. Children cannot drive themselves. It is hard to believe that our churches can feel so empty of young people during the summer because so many are not brought to Mass. Plan your weekend around the Mass. In fact, it is good to come early before setting out for your Sunday journey and pray for a safe trip. Remember, if you are occupied all day Sunday, come to the 5:00 PM Mass on Saturday at Immaculate Conception or the 4:00 PM Mass on Saturday at Assumption. We also have a weekly 5:00 PM Mass on Sunday afternoon at Immaculate Conception. With 8 Masses in our Parish that span over 24 hours – there is always a convenient time.

Children also enjoy visiting a new Catholic Church if they are away from Tuckahoe and Eastchester. Par-ents, remember that you are always giving your children a message: either the message that Sunday Mass is the most important thing your family does, or the message that Sunday Mass is not important.

When you go away on vacation, or if you are traveling on business, you need not worry about finding a local church and times, visit www.masstimes.org.

Vacations are meant to be enjoyed; but there is never a vacation from Sunday Mass.

The Church which Christ founded has not only preserved the Word He spoke, and the wonders he wrought; it has also taken Him seriously when He said:

“Do this for a commemoration of me.”

... And that action whereby we re-enact His Death on the Cross is the Sacrifice of the Mass, in which we do as a memorial what He did at the Last Supper as the prefiguration of His Passion.

Hence the Mass is to us the crowning act of Christian worship. A pulpit in which the words of our Lord are repeated does not unite us to Him; a choir in which sweet sentiments are sung brings us no closer to His Cross than to His garments. A temple without an altar of sacri-fice is non-existent among primitive peoples, and is meaningless among Christians. And so in the Catholic Church the altar, and not the pulpit or the choir or the organ, is the center of wor-ship, for there is reenacted the memorial of His Passion. Its value does not depend on him who says it, or on him who hears it; it depends on Him who is the One High Priest and Victim, Je-sus Christ our Lord.

When we think about going back to school, the first thought that enters our minds prob-ably isn’t the pests in the playground or the

dorm room. It’s important to be armed with the facts about some of the typical parasites that invade

the common spaces of schools, dorms, off campus housing and playgrounds.

Bed BugsBed bugs have become increasingly common in recent years. They are insects that feed on warm-blooded ani-mals (your son or daughter) and are found world-wide. Typically found in rooms where people sleep, hatchlings are about the size of a poppy seed. Adults are about ¼ inch in length. They feed mostly at night when your stu-dent is tucked soundly into bed. Their bites resemble a mosquito bite and can cause a mild to intense allergic reaction.Bed bugs have flat bodies and therefore can tuck them-selves into crevices, around clutter, in a bed-frame, mat-tress, and box spring. They also will make a home in luggage, furniture, clothes, pillows, behind molding, in curtains, and behind loose wallpaper. They can go for months without feeding, and therefore can be found in vacant or “clean” apartments.A few suggestions for reducing your risk of infestations:

� Inspect your apartment thoroughly for any signs of infestation.

� Reduce the clutter in your apartment. � Clean (even a vacant or clean apartment) thoroughly:• scrub likely areas with a stiff brush to dislodge

eggs;• vacuum entire apartment, mattress and box

spring;• dismantle and clean bed frame;• remove and clean dresser, drawers, and underside

of dresser;• encase mattress and box spring in special mat-

tress covers;• pull bed frame away from walls;• tuck in sheets and blankets so they do not touch

the floor;• place bed legs in a dish of mineral oil;• caulk and seal pipes, floors, walls and anywhere

there are crevices or holes.

49. When we were young we always abstained from eating meat on Fridays. Is this practice to be observed only during Lent, or on all Fridays throughout the year? At the request of the United States Conference of Cath-olic Bishops, U.S. Catholics were granted a variance from the general rule of abstaining from meat on Fridays out-side of Lent. Instead of abstaining from meat, Catholics may perform some other act of penance. However, Friday abstinence remains the norm for much of the world.

Personally, I would rather continue the traditional ab-stinence, in fellowship with Catholics down through the centuries, than having to invent some alternate penance every Friday.

Bereavement Support GroupJourney to Consolation Panel Discussion

Monday, August 8The Bereavement Support Group of our parish will have an entirely different format at its August 8th meeting. It will be a panel discussion entitled, Journey to Consolation, presented by three women who have attended or are currently attend-ing the support group meetings. They will discuss their own journey to consolation: how they have coped with their loss, how they struggled with daily activities, what strategies helped on their journey, how they finally arrived at this place in their new life, and what role their faith in God played in finding consolation. The panel will be moderated by Ann Gannon, our parish Grief Counselor.Members of our support group are planning to come to see how their colleagues lives and their journey will help them find consolation. You don’t have to be a member of the group to come. Just come with an open heart to listen to stories of grief and stories of love. Wine tasting and hors d’oeuvres to be enjoyed during intermission.Soprano Christine Partridge has performed a variety of operatic roles, including the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Antonia in Tales of Hoffmann and Micaëla in Carmen with local companies in New York City. Most recently, Christine covered the role of Almera in Nico Muhly’s Dark Sisters with the Gotham Chamber Opera in 2011. Ms. Partridge has been named a finalist in numerous prestigious competitions, including the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, the Con-necticut Opera Guild Competition, the Career Bridges Grant Awards, and the National Opera Association Vocal Competition. She was also selected to attend Renata Scotto’s Opera Academy in White Plains, NY.

Sacramento de Reconciliación o Confesión: A cualquier hora. Llame al sacerdote del turno al 961-3643. Además, los días sábados de 3:30 a 3:55 PM en la Iglesia de la Asunción, y de 4:00 a 5:00 PM en la Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción.

El Sacramento del Bautismo: Los Bautismos deberán ser programados para efectuarse durante domingos se-leccionados, en la iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción. Por favor llamar a la rectoría a la brevedad posible para hacer los arreglos pertinentes. La Catequesis o Instruc-ción Bautismal se ofrece durante, un jueves seleccionado una vez al mes.

Primera Comunión y Confirmación: La Catequesis para prepararse a recibir estos Sacramentos se ofrece en las Clases de Religión de la Escuela Parroquial de la In-maculada Concepción y deben registrarse en la oficina de la Escuela Parroquial de Formación Religiosa (Parish School of Religion): 961-1076.

El Sacramento del Matrimonio: Por favor llamar al Padre Sorgie, para acordar la fecha y la iglesia en la que se quiera efectuar el matrimonio. Se debe acordar fe-cha e iglesia con seis (6) meses de anticipación, previo a cualquier otro plan del matrimonial. Es importante saber que no se efectúan matrimonios durante los días domingos.

Requisitos: Para poder recibir todos los Sacramentos en nuestra parroquia, los interesados deben registrarse en la oficina parroquial de la Inmaculada Concepción para certificar que son católicos practicantes en nuestra Par-roquia, y que asisten a Misa todos los domingos. Una vez registrados en la parroquia se les enviarán a su dirección postal unos sobres para poner la ofrenda dominical. Si alguna persona desea celebrar alguno de los sacra-mentos en nuestra comunidad pero pertenecen a otra Parroquia, deberán presentar un permiso del párroco de la parroquia donde estén registrados. Acompañen al Padre Sorgie y al Padre Paul junto a los par-roquianos T amigos, en búsqueda de la Misericordia de Dios, haciendo un peregrinaje a la recientemente renovada Cate-dral de San Patricio, en la 5ta. Avenida. Entre por las Puertas Santas, como lo ha designado en Cardenal Dolan. Reciba In-dilgencias Plenarias (aplicada bajo las condiciones usuales.) Disfrute de una comida Gourmet, servida al estilo familiar en el restaurante Carmine, localizado en el Upper Westside. El costo del peregrinaje es de $80 por persona e incluye; transportación en un auto bus cómodo, con baño, la comida, y los impuestos y propinas. Para pagar escriba un choque a La Inmaculada Concepción, o a La Asunción de Nuestra Se-ñora. Apresúrese a reservar su asiento.
