Father Raaser

The beginning of another month, a month closer to spring, only 19 days to go! Next week, the clocks are moved one hour ahead; I can hear the birds beginning to sing in the morning; even a robin was spotted already on the snow mounds. It has been a cold winter, but we are looking forward to spring time. We need encouragement through tough times.

Today is the Second Sunday of Lent; the Gospel is the Transfiguration of the Lord. The mystical experience upon Mt. Tabor was for the Lord an early preparation for His own tough times: His Passion and Death. While our Lord was praying, something happens instantaneously: Jesus was “transfigured.” His Body changed and His clothing became “dazzling white.” His divine nature, which He has kept carefully hidden until then, shone through His human nature.

Then, Moses and Elijah appeared. Why them? Simply, it was to encourage the Lord in His human nature. His Passion and Death were going to be a bloody, excruciatingly painful experience. As the Lord approached Jeru-salem, Moses, the great Law-giver, and Elijah, the great Prophet, appeared to reassure Jesus so that He would completely fulfill all the law-giving and prophecies in the Old Testament.

The Transfiguration was also for the Apostles. It gave Peter, James, and John greater insight into Who Jesus really is. God Himself told them to listen to Jesus. The Transfiguration also gave these three Apostles hope; and they, in turn, reassured the others about what was to come.

Finally, the Transfiguration account is meant for all of us. It gives us all encouragement as well, to stay the course in regards to our Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Are you staying strong in your resolve for Lent? It gives us encouragement in our daily life as well.

Lent is the time for us to be transfigured. To rid ourselves through mortification and prayer, the things that disfig-ure us through sin. God wants to transfigure us, if we cooperate with Him. So we need to heed the Lord’s voice, and follow His commands; by listening in silence, by being active members of the Church, by living our faith through the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, and by carrying our personal crosses with Him.

Our beautiful faith is to permeate every part of our life, and touch everything we say and do. We may fail from time to time, but we have to keep trying to live as our Lord taught. It’s never too late to begin Lenten practices, if you haven’t started. Begin today so that you can enjoy the transfiguration of your soul to God on Easter.

During March there are a number of events to help you during Lent. Thursday is the Soup Supper with a spiritual talk by Fr. Clark. Please try to take advantage of the opportunities that are offered.
