Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish has a rich, black cultural history. From its formation in 1920, the Black
Catholics of Anacostia contributed to its development and growth through their sacrifices of time, talent, skills and funds to provide a parish plant of their own. Thus, the
uniqueness of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish places it in a leadership position to interact with other Black and non-
black parishes in utilizing the gifts of Black spirituality through music, dance, education, and special action.
MISSION STATEMENT: We, the people, of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, therefore, acknowledge that our Pastoral Mission is to proclaim Christ and teach the “Good News”, to worship and bear witness in the community, to love and serve as Jesus commanded, and to preserve and share our rich Black heritage.
VISION STATEMENT: “A Roman Catholic church that is actively visible in the Community, shares its spirituality through fellowship, and is committed to serving God.”

The Ascension of Our Lord, which celebrates the day on which the risen Christ, in the sight of His apostles, ascended bodily into Heaven is a moveable feast. The date of the Ascension depends on the date of Easter. Ascension Thursday always falls 40 days after Easter (counting both Easter and Ascension Thursday), but since the date of Easter changes every year, the date of Ascension does as well. COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Common signs of infection include respiratory
symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. The virus spreads through the air
from coughing and sneezing and also from close personal contact like touching or shaking hands.
You are encouraged to wash your hands often with soap and water at least for 20 seconds. When using
hand sanitizer, please be sure it has at least 60% alcohol. Also, it is very important that we adhere
to the request of staying 6 feet apart.

The mystery of the Trinity can be difficult for us to grasp. Today’s Gospel invites us to consider how the three persons—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit— work together so that God’s salvation is made known to us. Jesus’ mission is continued through the activity of the Holy Spirit in the lives of his disciples. We have received this same Spirit through our Baptisms. The Spirit, living and working within us,
reveals the mystery of God’s love for
us. Just as the first disciples were not left orphaned, we are not orphaned; we remain in God’s embrace through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Gather your
family and invite each family member to say what he or she knows about the Holy Spirit. Read al oud today’s Gospel, John 14:15-21. Wh at does Jesus say

disciples? Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we come to share in th e love of

to enter the hospital are encouraged to receive the Sacrament of the Sick prior to admission. Because of privacy laws, hospitals no longer notify parishes of a parishioner’s stay. Please notify the Rectory of the name of person, hospital and room number, also when the person returns home.
Parishioners who are sick or homebound and unable to attend Mass on Sunday may request to receive the Eucharist. Even if you are ill for a short

What is intercessory prayer? Intercessory prayer
is where we make requests to God on behalf of other people.
Who should we pray for? The bible exhorts us to intercede for all types of groups and people: church leaders, those in authority (managers, politicians, and anyone in a position of power in society); those who are ill; family and friends; enemies and those who mistreat or persecute us; all people should be prayed for.
Dear Father God, It saddens our hearts to see the great suffering of your beloved children in the world. We bring to mind all those in our locality who find themselves in a hard place. We especially pray for those who suffer physically with illness or mentally with depression or anxiety. Lord, come breathe on these people by your Holy Spirit and bring great love, hope and joy through us your church. Help us to minister to others in the strength of your Spirit and to work in unity together. May we shine your glorious light into the darkness and remain steadfast and true to you. Lord, it disturbs us when we see world leaders embracing division instead unity, pursuing wealth instead justice and concealing lies instead of speaking out the truth. We lift all those in significant leadership to you. Come guide their thoughts, cover their actions and renew their minds. Protect them from the influence of the realms of darkness and sweep away any corruption. We pray that you would lay out new paths of righteousness in troubled nations and lands. Father, it is disturbing to see the difference between rich and poor widening. We lift all those in poverty to you. Come bring miracles of provision, healing and restoration. Speak into our lives so that we might play our part in changing the world. We ask all this in the wonderful name of Jesus. Amen.

The month of May is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary!
May is a month of growth, when nature is reborn. This month normally belongs to the Easter season, between Easter and Pentecost. Many Catholics may be aware that May is consecrated to Mary, but it may be unclear why this month was selected for this particular distinction. Other months have more important feasts dedicated to Our Lady, such as August (Feast of the Assumption) and December (Feast of the Immaculate Conception). What is it about this month that makes it a fitting time to reflect on the Virgin Mary’s role in salvation and to honor her as the Mother of God? The reason for dedicating May to Our Lady is associated with the particular season of the year. May is certainly known for its springtime beauty. It is associated with flowers and blossoms, with trees which spring back to life, and grass which sprouts. It brings to mind the idea of promise and hope, of new life. During the Easter season we are more aware of Mary’s motherly presence and love. It is perhaps for this reason that popular tradition has dedicated the month of May, which falls during this liturgical season, to Our Blessed Mother.

May 17, 2020 Sixth Sunday of Easter
Having experienced the pain and sorrow and fear during the crucifixion, then the joy of the Lord, coming back to them and receiving the new life of the resurrection, the followers of Jesus now have to face the reality of the Risen Lord’s departure – again. He senses their confusion, pain and sense of loss. But before he leaves them, he gives them words of comfort and hope. Jesus, prepare his followers to stay connected to Him and one another through the power of love. He reminds them that the connection between he and the Father is steadfast. And he will ask the Father to send them strength to continue on without him, However, they must keep His commandments. They must be assured of the indwelling of love between the nature of the Father and the nature of the Son. Accepting this belief will allow for the receptivity of the Advocate, the Holy Spirit that will come upon them.
It has always been my conceptual idea, when thinking of the Holy Spirit, that the nature of the Spirit is the true mutual love between the Father and the Son. A bond that can never be broken because it coexists in their trinitarian nature as the third person. This pure unalterable adoration manifests within itself in the gifts that the Holy Spirit gives. The key element in Johns’ writings is this Love. “God loves the Son, the Son loves God”, together they love humanity and the replication of this love is what binds Christians together; “… And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal Him to them”. This agape love is not based on feelings and emotions but trust and sacrifice. The message to his followers today is to receive and believe in this agape’ (the Greek term referring to “the highest form of love, charity and Gods love for humans, and humans love for God”) love.
Jesus doesn’t give us all the answers to the questions we have. He knows that we will have to face difficulties on our journey of faith, disagreements in our belief with others and differences in the way we come to know him. Jesus prepares his apostles and us for the long road ahead by strengthening and encouraging his followers with His risen life through the gifts of the Holy Spirit and his own inner Peace. He is sending us out to proclaim the good news, but he does not expect us to do it on our own. At the end of next Sunday’s gospel we will hear it best, “I am with you always, until the end of the age.”
Encouraged by His presence the apostles and disciples will never be alone or helpless and neither are we, who are the community of believers today. We are asked face our daily reality and lives not just with hopefulness but with Faith and Hope in the risen Jesus and each other. Through celebrating and sharing in the resurrection, each of us also shares in and experiences the Love of God, the Peace of Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit. As we continue our journey through Easter, Let us pray that we will be blest with the gifts of Gods’ promise, the salvation of Jesus the Christ and encouraged by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality is offering two (2) $800 Scholarships. The first scholarship will be awarded to a Catholic Studententering college, and the second scholarship will be awarded to a collegestudent returning to college (sophomore, junior, or senior).
To apply you must meet the following criteria:
1. A member of OLPH Church
2. Presently active in a parish organization or involved in community service(written verification from the organization is requested.)
3. A current letter of acceptance from a college, technical institution, or a school ofhigher learning.
4. Submit a 100 word essay stating your goals, dreams and aspirations.
To apply please provide the student’s full name, address, home telephone/cell number and an e-mail address; in addition, the school name, address and telephone number. Please place information in an enclosed envelope marked BVM Sodality. You may email the information to [email protected], or you may place your information in the mailbox at the front of Rectory.

WOMEN’S MINISTRY SCHOLARSHIPS
Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Women’s Ministry is awarding Three (3) scholarships
($800 each) for the following categories: one adult student 21 years of age and above
accepted in a (university, community college, vocational or technical school); one college
student (freshman, sophomore, junior or senior); and one high school student who has
been accepted and is currently enrolled in an Archdiocese of Washington Catholic high
school. Applicants must be a member of OLPH Church.
Students will be rated on their academic record, volunteer service history, and Two (2) letters
of recommendation. Recommendations should be from adults 21 and older who are familiar
with the nominee’s character, academic record and volunteer service history.
The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage the applicants to continue their education.
All required documents must be submitted with the application.
