TOUCH OF GENIUS
Experience music the way its creators intended with the BeoSound Moment, an elegant new wireless music system from Bang & Olufsen. The deceptively simple wedge-shaped device is as innovative as you’d expect from the highly regarded Danish audio brand. It gathers music from a range of sources, from your home computer and mobile to internet radio stations and streaming services, all accessed through a unique double-sided controller. One face, in cool aluminium, offers a seven-inch touchscreen
with a pared-back display that includes the MoodWheel, enabling you to match your listening to how you feel. The other is in tactile solid oak with 12 embedded sensors that allow you to control the player with just one touch. The system also features PatternPlay, which learns what you like to hear at different times of day. fmBang & Olufsen BeoSound Moment,

WELL-TRAVELLED WEMPE
Inspired by some of the favourite destinations of Wempe’s creative director Catherine Plouchard, the Cosmora rings from the By Kim range are some of the brand’s most artistic pieces to date. Plouchard and Kim-Eva Wempe – the two women at the helm of this historic company – are frm believers in jewellery that fts into a woman’s life, that is luxurious and beautiful yet made to be worn. In line with this philosophy, the three new rings in this collection, Cape Town, Tokyo and Route 66, are exquisite pieces that can be worn every day. Crafted from 18-carat white gold and set with diamonds, the rings are engraved with fuid lines to represent the natures of the places that inspired them. hlWempe, Goethestrasse 10, 60313 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 2097 4747, wempe.de

MODERN LUXE
This season’s Ermenegildo Zegna menswear collection is a masterclass in luxury fabrics. The Italian fashion house, founded over a century ago as a wool mill that produced some of the highest-quality textiles in the world, has gone back to its roots with pieces crafted from the fnest wools and cashmeres. Highlights include cashmere polo-neck sweaters matched with exquisitely tailored velvet sports coats, while an impressive array of tweed caps is echoed in a tweed printed raincoat. This collection makes it easy to see why Ermenegildo Zegna is a go-to label for luxury modern menswear. rpErmenegildo Zegna, Goethestrasse 31-33, 60313 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 133 8430, zegna.com * for map go to page 75
BRIGHT IDEAS
Copenhagen-based womenswear company Ganni has opened its frst store in Frankfurt. The minimalist design of the interior works perfectly with the brand’s colourful clothing and accessories; light pink and white walls, white rails and display boxes allow the bold prints and solid colours to stand out. Creative director Ditte Refstrup has transformed the 15-year-old brand into an international name with her contemporary designs, which are inspired by iconic women and by the styles of the past, but with a modern touch. Thanks to its efortlessly stylish ready-to-wear, footwear, accessories and lingerie, the label was named Fashion Brand of the Year at the Danish Elle Style Awards in 2014. fmGanni, Kornmarkt 6, 60311 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 2609 4504, ganni.com

Swiss luxury watch brand Hublot has taken its total number of stores in Germany to three with the opening of its frst boutique in Frankfurt. The sleek new Goethestrasse emporium follows Hublot’s luxurious new design concept, The Art of Fusion. SAY IT WITH DIAMONDS
Inspired by the style of the 1920s, Bucherer presents its latest collection of fne jewellery, Vive Elle. The art deco-infuenced range comprises around 20 pieces, including earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings. TO THE MAX
Oversized jewellery dominated many of the collections this autumn/winter. Dominique Fenn fnds out why bigger has suddenly become better
46 | F E AT U R E S
Previous page: Givenchy autumn/winter 2015/16Above (clockwise from left): Marni; Proenza Schouler; Miu Miu, all autumn/winter 2015/16
There is something very comforting about the sound of bangles clinking together on a wrist, a melody of glorious silver
and golden notes. And is there anything that conveys an impression of being well travelled better than exotic jewels and one-of-a-kind statement pieces that are guaranteed to start a conversation? In what was possibly a sign that the German minimalist normcore movement is finally over, bold jewellery and crafted accessories made strong statements on the autumn/winter 2015/16 catwalks.
The normcore aesthetic is extremely low-key, stripped back and anti-style. It recently became a recognised unisex trend and is characterised by a simplified, ‘normal’ sense of style, with a distinct lack of detail, allowing wearers to blend into the crowd rather than stand out from it. This season’s demonstrable change of direction from the simplified hues of black, grey and navy from a plethora of influential international designers signifies a welcome return to showy style – at Proenza Schouler, one dress was P

decorated with 300,000 sequins. The real sense of change was noted in the finer details. Built over time, jewellery collections can tell a wonderfully unique story, and the tale for autumn/winter 2015/16 is loud and proud.
When it comes to the over-arching trends for the season, the spirit of spring/summer 2015 lives on in florals and delicate, feminine fabrics, with Valentino, Marni and Alexander McQueen all offering incredibly ethereal collections. It’s only natural that chunky and oversized pieces should balance this out. Trend forecaster extraordinaire Miuccia Prada took inspiration from several decades for her latest
Miu Miu collection, notably the 1960s through to the 90s, although it was the glitter and glam of the 80s that was most eye-catching. Oversized earrings looked like giant daisies with bright petals in yellow, white, red and pink. Every other pair was a drop design, with a crystal-encrusted stone hanging from the flower. Matching necklaces completed the floral look.
The Marni woman always exudes an air of adventure and for this season multi-stone earrings and sculptural bracelets in natural hues told of far-flung travels. At Givenchy, multiple septum rings and jewelled faux piercings were created by make-up artist Pat McGrath for each model. Although delicate pearls adorned their faces, this was a celebration of the strength of women portrayed through facial embellishment and the overall look was dramatic and aggressive. There was also a rebellious spirit at Balenciaga where designer Alexander Wang combined the traditional house codes with perhaps his most dramatic of visions for the brand so far. Ears were covered with multiple layers of pearl earrings, and decorative crystal-encrusted

Off the catwalk, jewellery retail has also been rejuvenated. According to the trend and innovation experts at research firm Stylus, ‘interactive technology, both in-store and online, is adding seductive new layers of personalisation and education to jewellery retailing’. The high-tech and high-touch worlds are colliding, and the in-store experience is one that simply cannot be matched online.
German watchmaker and jeweller Thomas Sabo says that life is too short for boring jewellery. A trip to one of his stores is a must for anyone who is a jewellery enthusiast and for whom this mantra rings true. His Karma beads and charms can be collected and pieces can be built up, with new charms added each season that can be used to create endless variations. For autumn/winter 2015/16 the brand is also offering statement bangles with floral central motifs, and oversized cocktail rings with jewels
in winter berry shades.Another German brand offering its own
take on maximalist jewellery is Niessing. The Phoenix collection is an architectural delight in miniature form. Signifying eternally repeating cycles, numerous slender oval discs are connected to produce a necklace and a bracelet, available in gold or platinum. The Papyr necklace is another sculptural gem, and gives the impression of an elaborately folded golden paper chain.
Trends in jewellery can go from minimalist and muted one season to overt and flamboyant the next, and both international designers and home-grown German brands offer their own interpretations of these looks. As the finishing touch, it’s all about how these trend-led jewellery pieces are matched with outfits. Klaus Schäcke admits that Frankfurt is ‘not much of a fashion city – lots of people go to the big designer stores’, he
says, with a hint of disappointment. Even so, plenty of others go to his store, too: Kleidoskop, an oasis of new design talent in Frankfurt-Mitte. Admittedly it’s not for everyone. When Schäcke and his partner Dragana Papric opened their frst store 20 years ago – a smaller space, still open and now dedicated to end-of-line pieces – it only sold clothing in either black or white. This approach lasted fve years before, as Schäcke puts it, ‘We discovered some colour – although I would say we still sell more black than anything. We’ve always liked clothes that emphasise silhouette and cut, rather than pattern and colour.’
The main store, now fve years old, is no less ascetic in its style. It is ftted out in minimalistic white, black and grey, a suitably rigorous approach that the two have favoured since the start and which, in fact, they have in their own home as well. ‘Back then people tended to think it was strange and cold,’ says Schäcke. ‘But now, of course, you see that simple style in shops everywhere – it creates a focus on the actual products.’
And at Kleidoskop, this is where one wants the focus to be. While the store stocks a few of the better known high-end intellectual

designer brands – MM6 by Maison Margiela and Costume National, for example – it has gained a reputation for its independent ethos, hunting down less well-established designers to showcase in the store. It curates and develops, rather than just buys.
Schäcke cites 8PM and Esgivien, both young brands from Italy, for example, with other ones to watch such as Cigno Nero and Vic Matié. He and Papric prefer to buy European-made clothes – for the quality – and would like to buy more from young German designers, ‘but they tend to have a very strong style and aren’t so easy to sell’, he laughs. ‘It’s hard to explain why some clothes are interesting if you can’t see it yourself.’ At the moment, bestsellers include thin leather jackets, trousers and shirts – if it sounds like a more masculine style, Schäcke insists that ‘we have plenty of pretty dresses, too.’
‘We spend a lot of our time trying to fnd something diferent,’ he adds. ‘That means a lot of time dealing with agencies – they come to us with new lines they think we might like – scouring the internet, at trade shows, seeing what people are wearing. But the results mean that the store is diferent, too. We think it’s important, especially in today’s retail environment, to focus on those smaller brands, the unusual. That’s what a discerning customer is after now: something they can’t get everywhere else. We’re drawn to the shape, the materials, the way it hangs.’
That is why Kleidoskop sells only womenswear. While Schäcke says he would like to sell menswear one day – and it might be included in a third store they are hoping to open in two or three years – he says it’s important to be able to try before you buy, and he’s not a sample size. ‘It’s funny, but it is
SHOP | 55
Above: one of Kleidoskop’s typically muted displays
really important to see and feel how a garment looks when it’s actually on, the way it hangs. And no menswear samples ft me,’ he says. ‘But Dragana is more a size small, so it’s easy for her to try everything on.’
Taking such an independent stance makes things harder in many ways. Both Schäcke and Papric have backgrounds in advertising, which they left when her agency closed and, frankly, they both just felt like doing something new. One might think that their expertise in branding and marketing would have come in useful. But Schäcke says that approaches to marketing have moved on as rapidly as fashion retail has. Part of their skill as buyers and retailers is just keeping up to speed.
‘I think we started out in the business right at the end of what was a golden era for fashion retail,’ Schäcke jokes. ‘Lots of people in the industry talk about how fantastic business was
back then. But now it’s much more dynamic. We have to keep pace with new developments in promotion, on the internet and in the fact that there are far fewer small independent retailers now, too, with the big chains coming up. It’s a very diferent business.’ Thankfully, the best independents, such as Kleidoskop, adapt and are able to go the distance – even if black is still their favourite colour kleidoskop.de

Practicality and simplicity lie at the heart of this evolution, ensuring that Adidas’s core values remain strong, whether the target is the street or the sports hall. The brand is proud of its ‘commitment to quality and passion for sport’, which ensures that every Adidas collection is tailored to provide comfort and performance wherever it is being worn.
With this in mind, the brand’s decision to work with some of the world’s most respected fashion designers is less surprising; Yohji Yamamoto, for instance, has worked with Adidas on its Y-3 line for more than a decade. Yamamoto is considered to be a master tailor, pushing fashion boundaries since the 1970s, and his bold, experimental designs for Adidas are no exception. The designer’s most celebrated silhouettes, including the Qasa, combine high-performance composite fabrics with vibrant uppers.
In recent years, Adidas has been leading the charge when it comes to blurring the lines between sportswear and fashion. The
German label has always been a leading supplier of sports footwear and clothing, but it is its passion for innovation that has made the brand an internationally recognised industry pioneer.
Adidas’s fashion credentials are impressive; recent collaborators include heavyweights such as Stella McCartney, Yohji Yamamoto, Raf Simons and Rick Owens, as well as Kolor’s Junichi Abe and hip-hop mogul Kanye West. Each has brought his or her own signature style to the partnership, which, combined with Adidas’s sportswear expertise, has produced something special. By incorporating the techniques and materials that each designer would use on the catwalk, Adidas’s pieces have been elevated from the sportswear sphere to become desirable garments in their own right.

The success of its Yamamoto collaboration has encouraged Adidas to take more risks with other avant-garde design talents. Rick Owens’ designs for the brand are considered the most experimental creations yet, incorporating clean monotone colour palettes and strong, fuid lines reminiscent of modern architecture. Owens’ work has attracted a new generation of sneaker fans who appreciate form and function as well as fashion.
Adidas has long championed the creation of garments that transcend traditional boundaries of what sportswear should look like. Stella McCartney is the designer who has done the most to help efect this change, especially in womenswear. Her design aesthetic is feminine, romantic and fattering. Fabrics that let the body breathe and move with ease are combined with striking, visually stimulating patterns to great efect.
It’s obvious that Adidas is very proud of its commitment to quality and passion for sport
Fashion often takes inspiration from the past, and Adidas has plenty of its own history to mine. The brand’s most renowned style, the Superstar, has become a timeless classic, beloved by sneaker enthusiasts and fashion editors alike. Created for playing basketball, the style was launched in the late 1960s and popularised by NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Its versatile design, suitable for wear both on and of court, was revolutionary.

Since then, the shoe has been reinvented several times over and even featured in a 1986 song by American hip-hop group Run-DMC called My Adidas. The members of the group were known for wearing only Adidas, and went on to make history by becoming the frst musical group to be ofcially endorsed by a sportswear brand.
The Superstar is surprisingly robust with a hardened shell-toe to provide additional protection. A design revamp in the 1980s brought the shoe to the attention of the skateboarding community, who were soon hooked by its tough exterior and the durability of its rubber outsole. The style has been reinvented again recently; Pharrell Williams teamed up with Adidas to create the Supercolor, an exclusive version of the Superstar available in 50 colours.
The Stan Smith is another classic style that
has been adopted by the fashion community. Designed for its namesake, tennis player Stan Smith, to wear on court, the shoe has remained virtually unchanged since its release in the 1970s. The shoe’s understated aesthetic makes it a universal style staple which complements bold directional outfts as well as simpler everyday ensembles. Both it and the Superstar have been spotted on the front row at various fashion weeks.
The story of the Superstar and the Stan Smith demonstrates perfectly the way sportswear has evolved to become part of the luxury fashion sector. Sneakers are now regarded as an everyday wardrobe staple, and as Adidas continues to collaborate with the world’s fnest fashion designers its clothing is acquiring a similar cachet, proving once and for all that style and substance aren’t mutually exclusive adidas.com

CAFÉ SOCIETYGermany is a nation of cofee lovers and the country’s café culture is thriving. Isabella Redmond Styles
picks some of the best examples in Frankfurt
Cofee is Germany’s favourite drink, more popular than water and even than beer. German adults drink an average of 165 litres of cofee per year, according to the most recent fgures from the Deutscher Kafeeverband (German Cofee Association).
Cofee was introduced into Germany in the late 17th century, when cofeehouses began to become popular across Europe. The beverage on ofer at the time would have been very diferent to that served after German cofee lover Melitta Bentz invented the modern drip cofeemaker in 1908. Bentz’s innovative paper flter made a grounds-free, less bitter cup of cofee; variations on her invention remain in use today.
Visitors to Germany will enjoy discovering the long-standing tradition of kafee und
kuchen. Frankfurt isn’t short of venues that serve great cofee and cake, whether you prefer wonderfully old-fashioned décor or an artisanal brew served in relaxed, minimalist surroundings.

Cheesecakes are a speciality, but there’s also a tempting selection of fruit tarts, traditional crumble cakes and indulgent bakes such as carrot cake and lemon meringue pie. Brot und Seine Freunde may be predominantly a bakery, but its owners appreciate that the best accompaniment to freshly made cake is a great cup of cofee. The right ingredients are essential; in this case, that means beans from traditional Frankfurt

The chocolate brownies, served plain, with cream cheese or with almonds, are particularly irresistible.Brot und Seine Freunde, Kornmarkt 5, 60311 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 2097 7885,brotundseinefreunde.de

RENÉ LEZARD
When Thomas Schaefer founded the René Lezard label in 1978, he did so with the idea of creating a modern, design-led premium brand for men and women that used only the highest quality materials. This philosophy remains at the core of the latest autumn/winter collection and the pieces are elegant and stylish without being trend-driven. Warm fabrics such as cashmere and wool give the clothes an invitingly tactile look. René Lezard, Hochstrasse 53, 60313 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 2197 6790, rene-lezard.com

WELLENDORFF
Wellendorff has been providing exquisitely made pieces to discerning jewellery lovers – including several kings, queens and empresses – since 1893, and now has boutiques worldwide, from Tokyo to Las Vegas. Among its most recent openings is the elegant boutique on Frankfurt’s prestigious Goethestrasse, which provides an appropriately stylish showcase for the brand’s striking 18-carat gold pieces, all impeccably made in Germany. Look out in particular for Wellendorff’s ‘spinning’ rings, made from an eye-catching combination of coloured enamel, gold and diamonds.

TISSOT
Tissot has referenced its heritage in its Chemin des Tourelles range of watches, named after the street in Le Locle, Switzerland, where the brand started to manufacture its timepieces in 1907. In the latest collection, a variety of versions is available: women should seek out the minimalist model with its white leather strap and glistening face while, for men, the rose gold watch with a deep-brown strap (pictured) is sure to become a staple. This is a key range from the timepiece specialist whose headquarters is still in Chemin des Tourelles.Galeria Kaufhof, Zeil 116-126, 60313 Frankfurt, +49 (0)69 21910, tissot.ch

Чтобы позволить этим максималистским украшениям раскрыться, стоит подумать о простых ансамблях.miumiu.com, marni.com, givenchy.com, balenciaga.com, thomassabo.com, niessing.com

globalblue.com
86

Kleidoskop
Klaus Schäcke
Mitte
Cigno
Nero与Vic Matié。

Schäcke
