DENIM DREAM

The young, carefree line from Tommy Hilfger, Hilfger Denim, ofers fashion-forward casualwear with a focus on that most adaptable of fabrics: denim. Inspired by classic American culture, the collection comprises high-quality apparel with a youthful and laid-back aesthetic. This season, women should keep an eye out for perfectly cut denim day dresses while, for men, the label has expertly embraced the sport-luxe trend with joggers, padded jackets and beanies that are slouchy and comfortable yet totally on-trend. Denim jeans are, naturally, available in abundance, from dark to light washes and from skinnies to relaxed fts. Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2015, Tommy Hilfger is one of the world’s most recognisable brands, ofering a wide variety of collections for men, women and children, all of which can be found at the Stockholm fagship store. hlTommy Hilfger, Biblioteksgatan 16, 111 46 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 679 8100,tommy.com

Visitors to Stockholm often want to know the beauty secrets of the local people, who often have great skin and hair and

a healthy glow, despite the harsh climate at this time of year. Three of the country’s leading beauty brands Estelle & Thild, Face Stockholm and Byredo could help us with our quest.

While each brand developed products to beneft national consumers, those from other countries are just as likely to fnd a product to suit them, particularly when it comes to protecting skin during the winter.

Estelle & Thild harnesses the power of Swedish herbs and fowers in a very natural range. Pernilla Rönnberg launched her brand in 2007 after becoming aware of the chemicals found in the skincare products she was using on her young children, Estelle and Mathilde. Rönnberg vowed to steer clear of unnatural ingredients, a vision that she still upholds, and her items are certifed as organic by Ecocert.

As well as aiming to respect the environment, Estelle & Thild’s products are efective. Our favourites include Intense Moisture Night Cream, which helps to rehydrate skin during

the winter, Biocalm Anti Redness Rescue Serum, which uses black elderfowers and oats to calm down wind-beaten faces, and Soothing Moisture Day Cream, which has been formulated to help create a protective layer.

On the make-up front, Face Stockholm is one to watch. Its focus is on naturally based products that are ‘trend forward, simple, clean, gorgeous and fun.’ The label’s barely-there nudes and bold, bright colours work beautifully against clear, healthy-looking skin and, if you need some help on this front, Face Stockholm can help. Top marks go to its Swedish Defence

collection, which is ideal in the winter months: the Daily Moisturiser’s list of ingredients includes lavender, rosemary, tangerine and alp rose to help weatherproof skin, while the Eye Serum uses alp rose stem cell extract to hydrate dry eyes.

Byredo is a super cool Swedish label that’s making waves abroad. A myriad of infuences can be seen in the label’s fragrances, refecting the background of its founder Ben Gorham: with a Canadian father and an Indian mother, Gorham’s early life was spent in Toronto, New York and Stockholm. Gypsy Water, one of Gorham’s frst fragrances, is a blend of bergamot, pine, amber and sandalwood and is still ofered by the label.

Byredo’s fragrances and candles became well respected for their quality, leading Gorham to introduce soaps, body oils, hand creams, lotions and washes. Byredo’s Oud Immortel Body Cream is particular suited to the winter, with its nurturing and warming mix of incense, cardamom and patchouli. The label’s international standing was confrmed in 2014 when Gorham opened his frst New

York store, and eyewear designer Oliver Peoples has collaborated with Gorham to study the link between sight and smell and to produce a collection of scents and glasses.

This is a thinking-person’s beauty label, if ever there was one, and the man behind the brand is also a source of fascination. Gorham has been featured in Vogue, Vanity Fair, V Magazine and Elle not just for his expertise in perfume but also for his personal style.

Sweden is known for its outstanding design, and it’s no surprise that the country is also making a name for itself in the feld of beauty estellethild.com, facestockholm.com, byredo.com

WONDER WOMAN

Carin Rodebjer’s fashion label has celebrated women for 16 years and is as relevant today as ever. Sally McIlhone

When she set up her fashion company in 1999, Carin Rodebjer was one of the frontrunners of the Scandinavian

style pack. Since then, her label Rodebjer has had a regular slot at New York Fashion Week and is now stocked in over 20 countries worldwide. Celebrity fans include Maggie Gyllenhaal and Meryl Streep, while Carin Rodebjer has been awarded Best Designer of the Year by Swedish Elle.

Scandinavian fashion has blossomed in recent years and Carin believes that her home country will continue to dominate the industry. ‘Swedish fashion is still very interesting. I think it keeps being relevant because it is wearable without compromising on style.’ Rodebjer’s autumn/winter 2015/16 collection We Are Stardust proves this: it features playful layers and an intriguing array of textures, from silk dresses and faux-fur coats to waxed mackintosh-style jackets and tactile knitwear.

By tapping into women’s increasing desire for wearable clothing with a touch of originality, Carin has built a successful company. She describes Rodebjer’s aesthetic as ‘timeless and relevant, slouchy and versatile’; this can clearly be seen in the current collection, which has a number of 1970s references, such as fowing dresses with purple translucent coral-like patterns, exaggerated cats-eye sunglasses, and monochrome printed turtlenecks. The designer says she was inspired by the ‘intense paintings’ of psychedelic artists Mati Klarwein (who created record covers) and Alberto del Pozo, who was known for his mystical portraits. Both artists’ work contains many references to women as goddesses, which fts well with Carin’s feminist leanings. ‘I aim to create fashion for modern and forward-thinking women, the kind of women I have always known and admired,’ she explains. ‘I want to create clothes that enhance their personalities yet simplify their everyday clothing decisions – clothing that prepares them for the task at hand. I strongly believe in each and every individual’s potential and in fashion’s ability to enhance and empower.’

The silhouettes of the autumn/winter 2015/16 collection have substance and strength, even when they feature a deep thigh-revealing

slit, showing that Carin understands each modern woman’s need to feel beautiful without being a pushover: wearing one of Rodebjer’s bell-sleeved blue polka-dot maxi dresses is sure to be an empowering experience.

This combination of ethereal beauty with a harder edge could be attributed to the designer’s diverse background. ‘Growing up on Gotland, an isolated Swedish island in

Carin has an aptitude for making layers and winter clothing that are appealing

the Baltic Sea, I was unaware of the fashion industry. In that sense it took me some time before realising I could actually work with fashion and clothing,’ she explains. ‘I was introduced to the fashion industry through my friends when I lived in Stockholm, however it was when I moved to New York and started studying at the Fashion Institute of Technology that I was really confronted by the industry.’ New York has clearly left a lasting impression on the designer, and her clothes sit well among the sleek, urban collections on show at New York Fashion Week. ‘I think New York has afected my designs a lot – in many ways Rodebjer is a combination of the intensity of New York and the serenity of Gotland.’

With her Scandinavian roots, Carin has an aptitude for making layers and winter clothing more appealing than, perhaps, a designer from warmer climes. Although she concedes that ‘each season has its charm’, she prefers to design collections for the autumn/winter season: ‘I love designing coats,’ she admits.

Her approach has obviously struck a chord with high-profle fashion fans. Maggie Gyllenhaal was photographed wearing a pink Rodebjer trouser suit at the eighth annual Veuve Cliquot Polo Classic in 2015 and, according to the designer, Meryl Streep is an admirer of her work. According to Carin, seeing her designs being worn by anyone – famous or otherwise – ‘is a very joyful and precious moment.’ Her plans for the future are to ‘connect with more inspiring people through creativity’ and ‘to let Rodebjer grow.’

With the continued popularity of her garments on and of the catwalk, we’re confdent that Carin and Rodebjer will continue to fourish rodebjer.com

In the last few years, the beautiful island of Södermalm has grown from a quiet residential area into one of the most exciting

parts of Stockholm. In particular, the area south of Folkungagatan – nicknamed SoFo – is now a hive of activity. Comprising just seven blocks, this is undoubtedly one of the trendiest places in an already extremely hip city and, if proof were needed, it was recently named one of the 15 ‘coolest neighbourhoods’ in the world by Vogue magazine.

With everything you could expect from a metropolitan shopping district, visitors can happily spend a whole day here, exploring everything from Scandinavian food to the best in Swedish luxury fashion.

In keeping with its hipster reputation, SoFo sleeps late. Many stores don’t open their doors until 11am or even midday, giving visitors the perfect excuse to visit the area’s charming cafés and bakeries before going shopping. Espresso bar and café Gilda’s Rum on Skånegatan is a stylish and welcoming place. Take in its eclectic

interior design, which features vintage furniture and ornaments, while enjoying your morning coffee and a traditional cinnamon roll. And if you’re in need of refreshment later on, a short walk away on Nytorget is Urban Deli, which shows that the spirit of modern Manhattan eating has found its way to Stockholm. Serving three meals a day from an ever-changing menu, with various options for take out, Urban Deli is a must-visit for anyone who enjoys simple food made using seasonal ingredients.

As its prestige grows, some of Sweden’s most successful brands are opening shops in the SoFo neighbourhood

As well as offering a great choice of food options, SoFo is also undoubtedly one of the best places in which to discover local designers, explore independent stores and get a feel for the real Stockholm. Julia Nielsen opened Hipp in 2013. A graphic designer and illustrator, she started with a small line of handmade jewellery which proved so popular that she branched out into bags, stationery, small home accessories and other items. ‘I chose SoFo as the location of Hipp because it felt like the place where we fit in best,’ she says. ‘Enough people are passing through but it’s never swamped. It’s a great environment to hang out in every day: trendy yet relaxed and cosy.’

SoFo has proved to be a favourite place for creatives, having long been seen as an area open to newness and experimentation, and is a natural home for many of the city’s artists, musicians and designers. Keramikerna, a small ceramics studio run by two female ceramists, is a wonderful place in which to discover local design. Spaces like Art Concept Store, an artist-run gallery supporting young and

emerging creatives, offers art lovers the chance to discover new names and immerse themselves in Stockholm’s contemporary art scene.

It’s not only independent stores and labels that have made their home in SoFo, however. As its prestige grows, some of Sweden’s most successful brands are opening shops in the area. Nudie Jeans, a premium denim brand that has turned heads with its minimal Swedish style and ethical approach, has had a flagship here for eight years. ‘When we chose the location, it was a neighbourhood that we felt really had potential,’ explains store manager Eliina Brinkberg. ‘A neighbourhood that has a touch of the alternative but was and still is commercial. It attracts many different people and the atmosphere is friendly and often inspiring. It’s one of those areas where you can spend a whole day - you have everything you need here.’

Whether it’s a newly launched pop-up restaurant or the monthly SoFo Nights shopping events, the area always has something exciting going on. While it might have gained a reputation for being a hipster hang-out, SoFo

is actually one of the best places to explore in Stockholm, truly welcoming everyone – visitors and locals alike. Much like the premise of one of the area’s most popular restaurants, Meatballs for the People, which aims to bring a Swedish classic to a wider audience, SoFo is shrugging off its exclusive vibe and is welcoming new visitors with open arms visitstockholm.com, gildasrum.se, urbandeli.org, hippstory.com, keramikerna.se, artconceptstore.se, nudiejeans.com, meatball.se

SHOW OF

STRENGTHStockholm’s most exciting jewellers are

looking beyond typically feminine designs to create a more intriguing look, says Beth Druce

Efva Attling has created a collection in collaboration with a children’s charity

With the line between casual and formal fashion becoming increasingly blurred, designer

jewellery is following suit. In Sweden’s capital, jewellery makers are creating pieces that fuse feminine elegance with fantasy and folklore and which, at times, show darker infuences.

Efva Attling’s ‘love afair’ with making jewellery started when she was 11 years old. At school, girls and boys switched classes, so that the girls learnt about metal work and the boys could try their hands at sewing. ‘Very soon I found out that banging and forming metal suited my temperament far more than sewing,’ says Attling. After persuing successful careers in modelling, music and maternity wear, she founded her eponymous label which uses gold, silver and precious stones to explore cultural themes and topical issues, through striking motifs and words. Madonna is regularly spotted wearing the designer’s Homo Sapiens necklace and her pieces have also been selected

by Hollywood flm stars including Meryl Streep and Sharon Stone.

While many of her collections, such as Rose Petal and Catch a Falling Star, have a pretty, feminine aesthetic, she has created another collection in collaboration with the children’s rights charity BRIS which has a harder edge. Here, gold and silver bracelets and necklaces feature horseshoe pendants that are engraved with a strong message, communicating that everyone deserves respect.

Attling also has a fne jewellery line. Her Little Bend Over rings feature stones crossed through with a band studded with diamonds. ‘You can choose from diferent coloured stones such as aquamarine, morganite, amethyst and rock crystal,’ she explains.

Above (from top): designer Maria Nilsdoter; the brand’s 4 Moons Knuckleduster

While this approach feels resolutely modern, Attling also looks to the past for her work. ‘Fashion is an inspiration, but I look back in time as well. My Viking collection is inspired by my ancestors. This is how they made simple, solid jewellery with a twist.’

Maria Nilsdotter has a penchant for the irreverent. She studied at the respected Central Saint Martins college in London and just a year after graduating, Nilsdotter founded her own label which frmly places her among the leading young and quirky Swedish jewellery designers. Her creations are made from gold and silver and feature precious stones and pearls. Nilsdotter’s work is instantly recognisable due to the incorporation of imagery from mythology and folk tales. ‘These have been a constant source of inspiration for me. I like contrasts and making something scary or dark into a beautiful piece to be worn.’

Standout pieces include the 4 Moons

Knuckleduster – four linked rings in 14-carat gold, with South Sea pearls and a pink sapphire – and the silver Lost World necklace with onyx, opal and turquoise that features the silhouette of an abandoned place. Necklaces and bracelets that spell out phrases such as ‘Hell Yeah’ and ‘Bang Bang’ have also come to symbolise the Nilsdotter’s approach, and the autumn/winter 2015/16 collection, her largest to date, has been inspired by a shipwreck.

The Ioaku label has been set up by Fanny Ek, whose surname means ‘oak’ in English. Ek, a fashion and accessories designer, launched her debut jewellery collection in 2013 and aims to create art that people can wear. She is inspired by the dynamic between art and nature and consequently her jewellery collections are rooted in the natural world. Volcanos, mountains, meteors and insects are all referenced in chunky statement necklaces and rings. In her Dragonfy collection, an intricately carved dragonfy pendant hangs of a metal choker, while the Vulcanos collection comprises large coloured stones set within chunky silver link-chains. The statement-like feel of Ek’s pieces have led to her work being met with signifcant industry acclaim.

What these Stockholm-based designers share is the capacity to withdraw into an other-worldly place in order to build their creations, with Nilsdotter in particular being inspired by Swedish folk tales. ‘There’s a lot of research and

sketching in the beginning, and that’s where I make up the world where the jewellery comes from,’ she explains.

TABLE TALKThe Stockholm restaurant scene presents an enticing mix of innovation and vibrancy. From authentic Italian cuisine to exquisitely tenderised Swedish beef, Isabella Redmond Styles

samples some of the best options

Stockholm glories in a wonderfully rich range of cuisine. In recent years, its chefs have revolutionised eating options and turned the Swedish capital into a gourmet destination renowned for its innovative approach to food. Traditionally Sweden is known for its cured fsh dishes, hearty meatballs and culinary comforts such as Jansson’s temptation, a spicy creation made with sautéed potatoes, sprats and cream. Yet Stockholm’s restaurants have also become pioneers, experimenting with exotic favours and quirky concepts. Visitors can expect to feast on aromatic North African dishes, enjoy impeccably made New York-style hamburgers and feel transported to art deco Paris in a glamorous French brasserie, all without leaving the city limits. The emphasis on and provenance is paramount, and Stockholm’s restaurants are rightly proud of the region’s produce. We’ve selected our favourites for faultless service and appealing favours.

A dream destination for carnivores, AG is served by the same meat supplier as the Swedish royal family, and its succulent porterhouse and entrecôte steaks are considered the best in town. It is housed in the former workshop of Hallbergs silversmith, and this is refected in its name, AG being the chemical term for silver. There’s a pleasingly hands-on approach here, with meat tenderised in-house. Displayed in a large fridge at the entrance, the cuts and carcasses are a feature of the Jonas Bohlin-designed interior. The menu highlights seasonal ingredients so, depending on the time of year, you could start with Borgholm cheese from Öland island or soft-shell crab fried in garlic. Mister French combines Scandinavian quirkiness and style with the traditions of a French brasserie. Set in Stockholm’s Old Town, it has a glamorous, art deco-inspired interior. The menu centres on grilled meat and exquisite seafood; browse it as you sip one of Mister French’s cocktails, such as Mister Swizzle, a blend of Cointreau, lime, mint and bitters. The restaurant’s seafood counter ofers everything from oysters served with shallot vinegar to lobster and langoustine. To start, try the lavish seafood platter of lobster, crab, shrimps and more. Mains include the Mister French burger: made with a mix of chuck steak and brisket, it is served with smoked brisket, Cheddar cheese, avocado and trufe mayonnaise. Excellent French desserts such as crème brûlée and chocolate mousse are proof that some things are classic for a reason.Mister French, Tullhus 2, Skeppsbrokajen, 111 30 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 202095,mrfrench.se

HUGO BOSS

For autumn/winter 2015/16, Boss menswear

is inspired by sophisticated winter holiday

destinations – think Aspen, Colorado, or

St Moritz, Switzerland. As such, the looks

refect outdoorsy elegance. From padded

coats to pure wool trousers, even the

warmest layers are cut close to the body for

a fattering ft. True to form, materials are of

the highest quality and range from merino

wool and mohair to the fnest cashmere. The

colour palette is similarly refned, sticking to

shades such as granite and glacier blue with

just a hint of brick red. th NK Hugo Boss,

VICTORIA SCANDINAVIAN SOAP

Victoria Scandinavian Soap is a Swedish family business whose products have been trusted for generations. One of the brand’s bestsellers is its Egg-white Facial Soap (Lanolin-Ägg-Tvål), a gentle cleanser with rose water and lanolin to clean and soothe the skin, and inspired by a mixture originally prepared at home by women to help them maintain a glowing complexion. The company was founded in 1905 in Helsingborg, Sweden, and is an ofcial supplier to the king of Sweden.E Torndahl, Västerlånggatan 63, 111 29 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 103409, victoriasoap.com

SKANDINAVISK

For autumn/winter 2015/16, Skandinavisk has created a collection of scented candles that capture various aspects of Nordic living. These hand-poured candles contain a slow-burning mix of mineral wax and vegetable wax and feature 100% cotton wicks. thScandinavian Design Factory, Folkungagatan 85, 10 388 Stockholm, +46 (0)706 871679, skandinavisk.com

PRADA

This season, Prada has taken inspiration from its archives to produce a collection that is sweet and strong. Tweed coats have been given an edge thanks to loud colours and oversized brooches. Humble jersey material has been reinvented to resemble neoprene and is used liberally to create smooth, boxy pieces that wouldn’t look out of place in a sci-f flm. Accessories are as impactful as ever, with long, brightly coloured leather gloves. However, the standout product of the season has to be the double-strapped Mary Jane shoes in varying shades of metallic.Prada, Birger Jarlsgatan 11, 111 45 Stockholm, +46 (0)8 660 5700, prada.com

TRANSLATIONS

People», популяризирующих классическую шведскую кухню, район SoFo встречает своих гостей с распростертыми объятиями, несмотря на эксклюзивную атмосферу.visitstockholm.com, gildasrum.se, urbandeli.org, hippstory.com, keramikerna.se, artconceptstore.se, nudiejeans.com, meatball.se

Page 122: SHOP Stockholm AW15

Beth

Druce

Efva Attling

Homo Sapiens

Catch a

Falling Star,

Little

Maria Nilsdotter
