AbstractThe micromechanical study of composite materials consists in observing theconstituent materials (reinforcement & matrix) at the microscopic level in order tounderstand and predict their combined behavior. This theoretical study is usuallyjustified by the long time and high cost associated with actual molding andcharacterization of so many possible combinations of materials. Various commercialsoftware are available for the study of mechanics of composites, and some of themhave modules dedicated to micromechanics, macromechanics of a lamina and alaminate, or simple-geometry structures. However, they can be expensive, preventingtheir wide-spread use, and most are not much resourceful regarding micromechanics. In this seminar, some basic concepts of composite mechanics will be briefly discussed, followed by a more detailed discussion on micromechanics including variousanalytical models. Then, a free web application (software) developed in house, calledMech-Gcomp, will be presented. This software is divided into modules for micro-mechanics, macro-mechanics, and nano. In micro-mechanics, in particular, differenttypes of reinforcements (continuous, discontinuous and particulate) and architecture(reinforcement geometry and orientation) will be presented. Some case studies willbe shown and the analytical results compared with experimental data for actualmolded composites. Lastly, the students will be able to use the software to solvesome basic exercises. (Students are advised to bring a laptop for the exercise part)
Speaker Short CVProf. Sandro C. Amico did his B.Sc. and Masters in Engineering in Brazil and his PhD atthe University of Surrey in England (2000). He is an associate professor at theMaterials Engineering Department in the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul(Brazil) where he has been working on various aspects of composite andnanocomposite materials, mostly experimentally-based.
