MARKETING APPROACHI you recall the great diculty that I was having with tractorshopping, I nally decided to adopt a totally new approachYou see, i you look at the whole tractor issue rom a marketingperspective, it would go something like this. People dont simplybuy products (say a car), they are actually solving problems(transportation) or satisying needs (escape rom the missus).

So i I look at the problem rom this point o view ... I dontneed a tractor!!! What I really need is a snow removal solution, adirt digging solution and a dirt/gravel moving solution!!! OkayI think Im on the right track here. When solving a problem ascomplex as this, it always helps to look around and gure outwhat assets you have to work with!!!

Lo and behold, one o my biggest assets is the ... WIFE!!!! Acouple o shovels and I have a snow removal solution!! A pointyshovel and my dirt digging solution is solved!! Trow in a whee

barrow and dirt/gravel moving is a breeze!!!When you look at problems rom the proper perspective thesolutions become obvious, I dont need a new tractor, I need anew WIFE!! Now what specications do I need to look or??Weight, height, temperament, uel capacity, liing ability, legstrength, ............ Oh!!Oh!! Somehow shopping or a wie couldturn out to be a lot worse than shopping or a tractor!! And Imkind o guessing that a tractor just might be cheaper.

Hey!! What i I shop or a tractor like I did or a wie!! Gooaround or a bunch o years enjoying lie, wait or desperation toset in, and take the rst one that I could nd!!!!!!!!!

Hold on!! Tat really isnt unny and certainly not true. Wellalright ... I do nd it unny but it still isnt true. I will probablynever nd a tractor as good as my dear wie.

Actually, in tractor shopping, desperation did set in, snow wascoming, and I didnt have aremoval solution ready (themissus threw the oferedshovels much urther thanI thought possible). Butthanks to the support o mydear wie, we should nowbe ready to ace winter onceagain. 800

HAMPTONPIGGS PEAK NEWSLisa and I are back from a very successful trip to Piggs PeakSwaziland where we met with all our key partners. We gotconrmation that the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership is doingmany things well and found out there are a few things we cando better. Sometimes you actually have to be there meet thepeople, hear the stories, and get the candid opinions that onlycome from personal sharing.Overall there are far too many eye-opening stories to even begin

to tell in this space. We met a primary school class who told us

in unison they are not afraid of AIDS! and recited their ABCs Abstinence; Be Careful; and Condomize. We gave a drive toSikelo Mahtuza, who leaves his home every morning at 4 am towalk 7 km to school. We visited the meager dwelling of MzamoMakhanya, a very bright 15 year-old orphan that lives with hisgrandmother but cant pay school fees to continue his educationnext year. And perhaps our most unforgettable encounters werewith the children in the hunger-and poverty-stricken settlemenof Macembeni who got so excited when we delivered soccer ballsand jerseys from Hampton!Since returning I have been asked by Hamptonians can you see

the dierence we are making? Its a di cult question to answerbecause the indicators of a community besieged by HIV/AIDS arestill prevalent. ere is poverty, hunger, and disease on a level that

is unknown here in Canada. But we met 80 happy and hopefulstudents at Fundukuwela and Peak Central High Schools whoare there only because of Hamptons support. And at Macembenwe were greeted by 20 or so extremely grateful elderly people forwhom we are providing clean water.

Lisa and I were blessed to experience rst-hand the powerfupresence that Hampton now has in Piggs Peak. It is through thispresence that we making inroads in the ght against HIV/AIDSPerhaps the most meaningful example of this came on the last dayof our trip when we visited the homestead of Nontokozo Mazibukoone of our sponsored students. It was because of our personalconnection with Nontokozo through our Starsh program thatwe knew her family situation. It was through our connectionwith Karen Mandys church that we discovered her mother was

unable to work and there was no food at the homestead. It wasthrough the donation of a Partnership supporter that we wereable to deliver food to the family. And it was because of our caringrelationship with her that we were able to arrange testing andtreatment for Nontokozos mother.

So, yes, we are making a dierence sometimes in roundaboutways but thats oen how things work in a neighbourhood. AndLisa and I saw that Hampton and Piggs Peak are close neighbours

Please help now by visiting our website hamptonpiggspeak.caand making a donation or signing up to be a Starsh sponsor. Ourneighbours need our help. 110

    MUNICIPAL GARBAGE COLLECTION

Hamptons New Waste Management ProgramAs of January 1st, 2012, the Town of Hampton will be taking over

residential garbage and compost collection for the municipality. The

Town aims to provide innovative waste management services to our

residents in an ecient, eective and courteous manner creating

environmental sustainability, promoting diversion and maintaining a

    clean town.

The Town of Hampton will be providing residential curbside garbage,

compost (including yard waste), over-sized items and white goods

special collection services. We will also provide collection of litter

receptacles throughout the Town. This material will be transferred to thelandll and processing facilities. As usual, the Town will not be providing

waste management services to residents living in apartment buildings

with three or more units or to commercial and institutional locations.

The Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission will continue to be

responsible for the management of all recyclable materials delivered to

the Blue Bins located adjacent to the Service New Brunswick Building on

    William Bell Drive.

The Town will provide each residence with a Garbage Cart free of charge.

The carts will remain the property of the Town of Hampton and are given

to you for your use. Soon we will be delivering a garbage cart to your

home. The cart is very similar to your green compost cart. You may start

using your carts as soon as you get them. As of January 1st, only garbage

placed in the Garbage Cart will be collected by the Town.

Compost and Garbage will continue to be collected on alternating weeks.

Your compost week will remain the same as it is now, as will your

garbage collection week. Please watch for information included with

your garbage cart and on the Town website concerning any changes to

    collection days.

Compost and Garbage Carts must be curbside no later than 7 am on your

scheduled pick-up day. If you have a driveway, place your Compost or

Garbage Carts on your driveway; otherwise place either cart at the edge

of the sidewalk, blocking as little of the sidewalk as possible. The cart lid

must be closed and the cart positioned so the handle and wheels face the

road. In the winter, do not place carts behind or on top of snow banks.

Please make sure they are clearly visible and accessible

You may register for the pick-up of oversized items or white goods by

    calling 832-6065.

Hamptons Waste Management Program lets all residents participate in

creating a healthier environment. Its also a better way to manage yourhousehold waste, through three easy steps.

    1. COMPOSTING food and yard waste

dramatically reduces the amount of waste

we send to the landll. Yard waste, with

the exception of brush, can also be

dropped o at the leaf bin located behind

    the rink.

    2. RECYCLING paper, cardboard, metal

and plastic at our local Recycling Depot

the Blue Bins on William Bell Drive (next

to the Service New Brunswick building) is

a great way to cut down on the bulky

items that quickly ll up your garbage. Dont forget to take your deposit

containers to our local redemption centre for refunds.

    3. GARBAGE will now be placed in your new

garbage bin supplied by the Town of Hampton. For

    more information on Hamptons Waste

Management Program please call 832-6065, email

[email protected] or visit the Town website.

CIVIC NUMBERSEmergency and Municipal services can't

help you if they can't nd you. Without

properly posted civic numbers to guide

    them, emergency responders may have

diculty locating the site of a 911

emergency. Without properly posted civic numbers the Town is unable to

provide you with proper waste management services. Civic numbers arerelatively inexpensive, and extremely eective. All property owners should

ensure they have posted a civic address sign. Signs should be posted on the

same side of the road that the property is located and should be visible

from the street during night or day (unobscured and within 2-6m of the

street works best). The number should be visible facing trac driving from

    either direction.

A GIFT THAT LASTS A LIFETIMEHelping your child learn to appreciate. We arenot born knowing how to appreciate. It is a skillwe learn and thereore a skill that needs to betaught. Make it a daily activity/routine in your home.At mealtime or bedtime share with your childsomething that you appreciated happeningin your day and how it made you eel. Ten ask your child torecognize something that they appreciated and how it madethem eel. Tis helps your child to realize how other peoplesactions make them eel and to appreciate people in their lives. Promote a helping attitude. First we need to model a helpingattitude to our children. So every now and again pitch in withsome o their tasks as this will help teach your child to appreciatethe importance o helping out. By helping your child pick uptheir toys, you help them to get a better understanding o how iteels to have help. Now this doesnt mean that you do it or themdo it with them which encourages a we approach to gettingthings done. When parents constantly do things or our childrenwe are not teaching them to appreciate the eort it takes to getthings done. By encouraging an Ill help you you help meattitude in the house, we are helping our children realize that al

these things take eort (another words clean rooms just donmagically happen and suppers dont just appear) and to developa helping attitude.

Te word no teaches appreciation. I we give our childreneverything they want when they want, it makes it verychallenging, i not near impossible, to learn gratitude when theirevery whim is granted. By saying no to our child, it teaches themthat we do not have to grant their every wish and it will helpthem to appreciate our yess that much more.

Your child will not learn to be grateul in one day. It will taketime, eort and lots o teachable moments but they will learnAnd that is something we can appreciate.

RARELY SEEN IN NBI thought your readers might enjoy seeing a few pictures of ararely seen New Brunswick animal. Back in September I wasfortunate to have seen a Fisher in the woods directly behind myhome here in Quispamsis. I was standing still when I caughtsome movement and all of a sudden a Fisher popped overa little knoll just ten meters away. I was very surprised andequally surprised as to the size of this animal. With its long tailit would have been three feet long. As a result of this encounterI purchased a trail camera and set it up in the woods along withsome bait.

For those readers who do not know what a trail camera is,it is a motion activated ditgital camera set to take pictures ofanimals as they move in front of the camera. Over the nexcouple of weeks I captured numerous pictures of raccoons andeven a coyote but it took several weeks before I got pictures ofthe Fisher. I now have hundreds of pictures as the Fisher gotused to my free meals..

ey are pretty common in the Province trappers can catchthem legally and there is no limit, they are just rarely seen. eodd part is that its living in Quispam they usually prefer oldgrowth remote forests. eir favorite food is porcupine oneof the few animals that can prey on them because they know

how to kill them and the quills dont cause them grief. Are yourneighbors missing any cats or small dogs? ey like squirrelsand mice too but will take anything smaller than they are.

SISTERS & BROTHERS IN SPIRIT GATHERINGEach December 6th, for the past 10 years on the National Dayof Remembrance and Action to End Violence Against Womena group of women and men gather in the cool twilight at a littlecountry church on the hillside of Long Reach on the KingstonPeninsula. Without assuming all is known and understood, wegather to lament and examine our roles in violence; to stateour complicity in the harm that has been done; to recognizethe structural nature of much violence and to acknowledge the

violence that erupts and oen perpetuates itself in families.Together we grieve the undercurrents of cutting remarks

indierence and neglect, scape-goating and belittling that taketheir daily toll on the human psyche and diminish joy and lifeitself. We gather to lament the violence of our language. We doal this through words, music, candle lighting, drumming andsilence and hopefully leave with a sense of hope that violencecan be overcome one person, one household, one communityat a time.is year the worship title has been expanded from Sisters in

Spirit to Sister & Brothers in Spirit to let it be known that all arewelcome. is is a gathering for everyone - women and menalike. For it will be only when we all come together as peacemakers that violence will cease. Sheila Contreau leads in an

JOYI came across an old photo recently of my daughter at age six, dancing in the pouring rain in October in a bathing suit. I hadnot seen the photo in many years (at least in part because myother daughter had liberated it from the photo album for aproject a couple of years ago) but I remember the day so clearly Idid not need to. It was an unseasonably warm October day thatsimply poured rain. e girls put on their bathing suits and wentout on the bricks in the back yard in water up to their anklesand danced and sang. e photo has captured that expressionof pure joy that no doubt was what so imprinted the day in mymemory. As adults, we are so much more controlled than as kids. I think

we have learned to reign in our delight for fear of sounding orappearing childish or foolish. Fear of what others will think of us

can suck all of the joy out of life. It can be tough to step outside ofour comfort zone and experiment a little. For some of us it getstougher and tougher with each passing year, and for some othersof us once we reach a certain age suddenly we can let go of thatconcern of what others think and do something just because wewant to (the Red Hat Society being a prime example). Start small. . . a new hair colour (you can always change it tomorrow if youreally hate it), an outt you would normally consider too bright(buy it second hand and you wont have too much invested init), an activity you have never tried (zip lining - are you nuts!).e best way to live life joyfully is to savor today. Enjoy whatever

it is you are doing. Enjoy the people around you. Childlike is notchildish. My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but

just enjoy your ice cream while its on your plate.~ ornton
