BOXINGWhat could be one o the worst nightmares that a guy could everexperience?? You get into a boxing match with the missus andshe cleans your clock. Yes you heard right!! Now mind youit was only on a V screen using our new video game systembut still it was pretty painul!! No not my body, just my egoNow these games are not perect (obviously) but their ability totranslate your body movements and put it all on the V is trulyremarkable. So ... hiding the embarrassment o my boxing deeat, we movedon to table tennis. Once upon a time I was a airly experiencedtable tennis player, but that experience ailed me as I wentdown to urther deeat and humiliation. But, with my neversay die personality, I went about practicing my table tenniswith renewed vigour. I moved up rom beginner to amateur

to proessional and rom there demanded a rematch with themissus. Victory!!!!! Not even close, I won each game!!!Just as in lie, success usually takes a lot o practice. But success

isnt just doing the same things over and over again. o trulydevelop new skills you have to experiment and try new ideasWhat happens when I do this and i I change this what happens??Eective practice isnt so much about simply doing or playing, itis also about learning and adapting.

For instance, one o the things that I have learned is to neverchallenge the missus to a game until I have achieved some reallevel o skill at it or even better, nd a sneaky way to win withoutskill. I am thinking that i I can convince Xbox to get a betterhandle on reality, the missus should be way too short to evergive me a head shot. Another thing I havent tried, is to see what

would happen i I kick her real good. Against the rules, whoknows but could be worth a try.

Alternatively, I could adopt a moremature attitude towards losing. Youknow, Its not whether you win or losebut how you play the game. I coulddo that you know, but somehow it justdoesnt seem as appealing as trying tokick her butt. 800

A short note on Floras background her ather (FredericHussey sr.) and her mother (Louisa) had our children Frederick Jr., Flora, Percy and Waldron. Te Hussey amilyimmigrated to Winnipeg rom Belast, Ireland in 1889. Fredericthe ather, lived only eight years in Canada his widow openeda boarding house to support the amily. In 1901 the three oldestchildren did their ge3st to help their mother; Frederick earned$400; Flora, $17; Percy, $250. Tree years later Flora was stillliving at home with her mother and brothers, but working as astenographer.Flo ound a position at the Manitoba Government elephone

Company or the next tine years. Te labour situation was verypoor at the time and a general strike occurred in Winnipeg in1918-19. the telephone company had a policy that a mother withchildren could not work or them. Since her husband Harrysdeparture in 1915, Flo was a single mother o two childrenShe kept this inormation hidden or a time; nally, nding itincreasingly dicult to keep enough ood on the table or even tokeep track o two lively sons, she sought help rom her estrangedhusbands amily in Hateld Point, New Brunswick.

Aer arranging or some time o, in 1916, Flora took the

boys by train to New Brunswick or what she believed wouldbe a temporary stay. when she reluctantly le them with theirgrandparents that day, she did not dream she would never seeher elder son again or that Clarence would orever eel she hadabandoned him.

Flo ound her in-laws, Charles and Ella Jane Nobles, and theirson Charles, worked hard on their Kings County homesteadFish were available rom Belleisle Bay; and crops could be grownon their land. Te Hateld Point home seemed the best situationor her sons at this dicult time.

Apparently the grandparents did not explain to the boys thereason or their parents separation and why they were living inNew Brunswick. I Flora had told them, it apparently did noregister with Clarence who was eight years old, and with Earle

who was three years younger. Worse than that, they [Charlesand Ella Jane] did not deliver Floras letters to her sons or speako her at all. Her name as absolutely orbidden in the home andsoon Earle orgot her. Clarence didnt. Nor did he orgive her.Clarence elt he had been abandoned by his mother, but orFlora their stay with the grandparents was to be only temporaryor the boys.

In 1919 Flora wrote Charles and Ella Jane that she elt she wasnow able to support the boys and that she was coming or them.Te grandparents immediately sent word to Harry in ucsonArizona. He made contact with his sister, Fannie Florence(Nobles) McCoy, in Boston,to take the boys to her houseuntil he was well enough tocare or them. Harry Nobles(now calling himsel HarryNolan) told her to tell the USAborder ocials that the boyssurname was now Nolan andnot Nobles.Fannie arrived at Hateld Point

one day and the next day leor Boston with the youngsters.Because o the name change,Flora never ound her sons. o be continued. 127

Perhaps no other time of year is more anticipated

than spring. After a cold winter, many people awaitthe arrival of spring like a child awaits the arrival of

    Christmas morning.

Among the more popular annual rites of spring is

the road trip. A chance to tackle the great outdoors

with the spring wind in your hair, spring road trips

have come to define a season beloved by outdoor

enthusiasts. For those planning their own road trip

this season, consider the following tips to ensure

yours goes off without a hitch.

Travel Tips to Help Road Trippers

    Hit the Ground Running

Give your car a thorough wash. While it mightseem obvious to get your car washed once spring

arrives, few might be aware that a thorough car

wash pays practical as well as aesthetic

dividends. Over the course of a typical winter,

vehicles are exposed to all sorts of harmful

elements, including salt used to improve icy road

conditions and slush and grime leftover over

from winter snowstorms. These elements can

create deposits that make it difficult for a car to

run smoothly, resulting in poor fuel efficiency

and possibly harming the vehicle even further.

Don't forget the first aid kit, but pack it last. Road

trips, especially those with active kids along for

the ride, often include a few cuts or scrapes.

That's why it's always wise to take inventory of

the first aid kit before heading out on the road.

Make sure the first aid kit is fully stocked since

the last time you hit the road. In case of a

legitimate emergency, you will want the first aid

kit readily available and won't want to waste time

digging it out from under everything else in the

    trunk of the car.

Give a passenger a spare set of car keys. No one

plans on losing their car keys; it just happens

from time to time. At home, this can be a

nuisance. On a road trip, particularly one to a

remote area, this can be a disaster. While you

don't have to plan on losing your keys, you can

plan on what you'll do if you lose them by making

a spare set for a passenger along for the trip.

That way, if your travels take you on a hike in

some isolated woodlands or to soak up some rays

at the beach, you'll have a spare set of keys

readily available should yours end up missing.

    HAMPON PUBlIC REGIONAllIBRARY UPDAE

By rudy Kelly Forsythe, library committeememberStarted in April 2006, the Hampton PublicRegional Library Committee became an adhoc committee o the own o Hampton inOctober 2007. Over the years, it has heldnumerous meetings and initiated a library

site selection study as part o the own o Hampton recreationmaster plan. Tat study looked at such locations as the HamptonCourthouse, a standalone building on Main Street and as anaddition to Hampton High School.

For various reasons, the optimal choice was a stand-alonebuilding. However, at this time, own Council does not supportthe building and operation o a stand-alone public library. But,at the August 2011 library committee meeting, the Mayor andCouncil did say they would support the inclusion o a libraryas part o a multi-use acility in Hampton i the town movesorward on such a project.Did you know?

Te New Brunswick Public Library System provides access to aprovincial collection o more than 1.8 million items, including

books, music and movies.Te New Brunswick Public Library System oers a variety oprograms or adults and children such as story hour and publiclectures as well as services such as reerence, Inter-Library loanand public access workstations.

New Brunswick Public Library programs and services aredesigned to respond to the educational, inormational, culturaland recreational needs o residents o the province.Te library system supports economic and social development

and promotes sel-reliance by providing opportunities or NewBrunswickers to enhance their knowledge and their creativecapabilities.

What do you think? We want to know what you think abouthaving a public library in Hampton. Watch the next Hampton

HMS NEWSBy Hayley DoucetteDuring my time at Hampton Middle School,I have never been so proud to be a wildcat.Aer recent incidents in schools ar andwide, HMS has made extreme eorts tobring one topic in particular to the publicsattention: bullying.

HMS students and sta were stunned aer hearing about therecent increase in bullying, not just in our own school, but inothers as well. I will admit, when bullying takes place in a settingsuch as school, where a child is expected to be each and everyday throughout the week, it is shocking, and quite terriying.

So why am I proud to be a wildcat when all o this ishappening? Because o the tremendous eorts HMS is makingto bring the troublesome problem to the publics attention. InDecember, students made an independent statement by wearingpink on their own to stand up to bullies everywhere. Te statook this remarkable statement and turned it into somethingmore. Te next week, HMS held a bullying awareness day, where students wore blue, another anti-bullying colour, to showtheir support. Posters and large banners were put up aroundthe school to advertise the importance o putting a stop to the

never-ending problem. eachers spoke with students, personalexperiences were shared and sta worked hard to prevent theproblem rom happening.

But, was the action only temporary? Certainly not. Te levels obullying have gone down tremendously, and those great eortscontinue. Pink -shirts were sold or the February 29th pinkday, another day or bullying awareness. I eel students havenever been so willing to work together, or as closely, as they arenow. I thank the sta, especially Mrs. Dingee and Mrs. Ketchum-Boudreau (HMSs principal and vice-principal) or making ourschool a comortable, cheerul place to be, just as it always hasbeen, but more so. Make your mark and stand up!

Hayley Doucette is a Grade 8 student at HMS. 11

HAMPON-PIGGS PEAk NEWSSam Mncina, the principal o Peak Central, recently visitedRichard Matsenjwa, the new principal at Fundukuwela. JohnLovett was there and tells us one o the topics we discussedwas the personal and grass roots assistance o Hampton. Unlikemany causes, which solicit unds and where the unds disappearinto an anonymous vat, the Hampton Partnership benets thestudents directly and at a very personal level. We can see theresults - children who otherwise would be condemned to a lieo poverty or possibly worse, are provided with the opportunityto escape the cycle into which so many others are trapped. Teresults are tangible when we see them graduate and move onto higher education or to employment or which, without aneducation, they would not be qualied. We have a growing listo successes or which Hampton must take credit and be proud. One o the keys to our success is our thriving Starsh program

We currently have 65 individuals or organizations in Hamptonsupporting one or more students in Piggs Peak. On SundayFebruary 26th the Partnership had an Appreciation Night orStarsh Sponsors. Karen Mandy summarized the importance othe Starsh program in a letter to those attending.Having lived and worked in the community here in Piggs Peak

or the past 23 years, I have seen how, in recent years, the strain

o HIV and AIDS have impacted amilies at a grass-roots leveloday we see grandmothers and school-going children headingthe majority o households in this area; homes, where a wholegeneration is missing. Many households struggle to put oodon the table; and in a country where education is not ree anda school uniorm is compulsory, more and more children aresitting at home rustrated and doing everything (and I meaneverything) they can simply to survive.Without your support these children would not be able to aord

an education; but ar more than that, what the Starsh Programquite simply does is give these young people hope and a utureYou step in at a time in their lives when they are most vulnerableand you provide them with an alternative way orward - youopen a door or them that would have otherwise remained

rmly closed. As Westerners we see education as a right; to theseyoung people, it is a privilege, and to most o them, it is a meansto escape the lie in which, (through circumstances not o theirown creation) they have ound themselves trapped.

I honestly cannot express in words how valuable and preciousis the gi that you give to each one o our Starsh students.

I you would like to become a Starsh sponsor please visit ourwebsite www.hamptonpiggspeak.ca or call me, Mark Bettle, a832-0003. 110

MOORE fROM OAWAHon. Rob Moore, P.C, M.P.Since it is now tax time, I want to remind youo some o the ways you may be able to save onyour 2011 taxes. Since 2006, our governmenthas helped Canadians by reducing taxes inover 120 ways. Tese include: cuts to the GS,reductions in income taxes, the introduction

o the landmark ax-Free Savings Account and targeted tax cutsor amilies, seniors and job creators. We have helped a typicalCanadian amily save nearly $3,100 on average, per year.

Tis year, I want you to get the most out o your 2011 taxreturn. In this article, you will nd a list o some o the valuabletax credits that are available.

Our government has introduced Pension Income Splitting, which allows any Canadian resident who receives qualiyingpension income to allocate to their spouse up to one hal o theirincome. We have also doubled the Pension Income Credit rom$1000 to $2000.

We have increased the Age Amount to help seniors keep moremoney to meet their retirement needs. Also, we are providingCanadians with the Caregiver Amount or Canadians that arecaring or a loved one. Tis responsibility is both emotionally

and nancially dicult and under our government, a caregivermay be eligible to claim up to $4,282.Our government is providing many other tax credits including

the Canada Child ax Credit that allows Canadian amilies toclaim a tax credit o over $2000 per child, the Childrens Fitnessax Credit, which allows parents to claim a tax credit on up to$500 and the Child Arts ax Credit which allows parents to claimup to $500 as well. You may also be eligible to take advantage othe Volunteer Fireghters ax Credit which amounts to $3,000or the Hiring Credit or Small Business that provides up to$1,000.

We believe that Canadian amilies know how to best saveinvest or spend their money; not government, which is why wewill continue to promote an environment where Canadians keepmore o their hard earned money. We will continue to supportCanadian seniors, Canadian amilies and Canadian employers511

BIRHDAY PlANSOur birthday is ast approaching. As I mentioned last issue, onApril 6th the Hampton Herald will be thirty years old. Comingup in October the Valley Viewer reaches another milestone, turning twenty. While thirty is only one year more than twenty-nine, or some reason the round numbers always seem tohold more authority! And are generally deemed more worthyo celebration. So we here at Ossekeag have been contemplatinghow to best celebrate these anniversaries.I this were a thirtieth wedding anniversary it would traditionally

be celebrated with pearls. Well, I have no pearls to hand out, noteven pearls o wisdom. What I do have is a request. o mark thesespecial dates we propose to publish our top tips or buildingbetter communities. Tat is aer all what Ossekeag Publishingis all about. We solicit your editorial on all o the great things

happening in the communities we serve and at no charge to youto submit, or to you to receive, we share that inormation witheveryone in the community. For our anniversary we want totake this one step urther. It is our hope to publish tips on simplethings we can do to help build better communities, whether it isdonating to the ood bank, picking up litter when we are walkingor reading to kindergarten students at the local school. Weencourage you to send in your ideas and tips or us to compileand share. And more . . . look around your community and takenote o those people who are role models or building bettercommunities and tell us about them. Te person who continuesto coach minor hockey long aer their own kids have grownand moved on. Te person who is always rst to step orwardto help a amily in need. Te student who organizes ood drives.

April is also Volunteer Month, so what agreat time to acknowledge the people inour communities who do so much to makeour place in the world so amazing.

    o inspire each o us: Wherever a manturns he can fnd someone who needs him.~Albert Schweitzer . . . and . . . I you think

you are too small to be eective, you havenever been in bed with a mosquito. ~BettyReese. 801
