    2011 REVIEW

Gee Whiz, time ies!! Here we are at the last issue o ourpublications or 2011, then it is HO, HO Merry Christmasollowed shortly aerward by Happy New Year and thats it another year gone by, never to come again.

Up until we hit November, I have generally been thinkingthat this was a pretty good year!! Te Jet has grown into his jobas head o security, and a mighty ne job he is doing ... totalbusiness losses due to the or embezzlement - a big at zero!!!!Te missus seems easier to get along with or maybe Im justgetting so in my old age. Te GRAND, grand-daughter hasbeen just grand all year and a pleasure to have nearby. As longas we continue to play hide and seek, have oot races, andimaginative play times together, I know that Im not getting anyolder.

Although, under-unded by millions o dollars, my woods roadreconstruction advanced quite signicantly during the yearBetween the lousy wet weather we had and work on the woodsroad, I didnt harvest as much wood as I had hoped to but nobig deal.

So lie has been not too bad in 2011, until November rolledaround. Ten I mashed three ngers while working on my woodchipper, which was ollowed quite quickly with a lung inectionbut that little rough patch seems to be coming to an end. Bothngers and lungs are recovering and I expect by the New Year tobe back in tip-top condition.

November did, however, bring one antastic blessing thebirth o our second Grand-grand daughter, Charlotte RoseCharlie is already getting regular instruction on how to say

Grumpy, although I am willing to accept Bumpy to start owith, i she ollows the same learning curve as her cousin.o all o the people who make up the Ossekeag Family, readers

advertisers and sta, I want to wish everyone the very besChristmas Season ever. Make sure that you take the time toenjoy amily and riends. Also remember, Feeling gratitude andnot expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it. -William Arthur Ward.See you when we return in 2012 or another challenging year as

we seek to Build Better Communities!! 801

SEASONAl SONg - HOlIDAy FAVORIETe song Winter Wonderland has become a staple o holidayradio. Much like Jingle Bells, Winter Wonderland was notintentionally written to become a Christmas carol, but evolvedinto one over time. Te song was published in 1934 by composerFelix Bernard and lyricist Richard B. Smith. Smith resided in thetown o Honesdale, Pennsylvania, and was inspired to write thelyrics o the song aer seeing Honesdale Central Park and hisown childhood home blanketed in snow. Smith actually wrotethe lyrics while being treated in the West Mountain Sanitariumin Scranton, Pennsylvania, or tuberculosis.

Many singers have perormed the song throughout the years,so much so that it is oen a standard song on artists holidaycompilations. Some o the better-known and earlier versionswere made by Te Andrews Sisters and Perry Como.

Winter Wonderland has evolved into one o those songsthat inspires visions o snowy splendor. Original lyrics eaturea portion o the song mentioning young lovers being marriedspontaneously by a travelling parson, a Protestant minister. Some thought those lyrics sent the wrong message to children, and another version was written with a circus clown, instead.Te song has been sung with either bridge in place and evenboth in lengthier versions o the tune. Some ideas for the HolidaysMake the most of the BIG day.

Rather than one big gi-grabbing-unwrapping frenzy, encourage each familymember to open one present at a timewith all eyes on the person opening theirgi. is helps build appreciation into theactivity and places a focus on giving as wellas receiving

Make it last the whole year long. All the presents duringthe holidays can be overwhelming especially for young children. Why not take half of your childs gi and tuck them away andreintroduce them during the other months of the year. is willallow your child to explore their gis gradually and spread thatholiday joy through out the year. A great idea to help perk up thoselong winter days in February and rainy days in the summer whenyour kids are looking for something to do.

Focus on Family. Place the focus on celebrating together

( making cookies, decorating the tree, visiting relatives, eatingtogether) over the holidays rather than the presents. Talk aboutthose family traditions that Mommy and Daddy had growing upand what are now the Family Traditions.

e Gi of Giving. Encourage your child to think of giideas for others. Bring them shopping or better yet encourage themto make a gi. (i.e. cookies, drawings, cards, etc...). Even thoughyou may need to give your child money to buy a gi, it encouragesyour child to think about others and what would make them happy.Children get great pleasure out of giving gis and havingyou express your appreciation to them.Nothing like a Mommys /Daddys hug!

FINDINg FIDO uNDER HE REEMost children ask or a pet at some point in their lives very oena puppy, and very oen at Christmas. Tey plead with Mom andDad or a puppy and promise theyll eed him and walk him andtake care o him. Te novelty usually wears o aer a ew weeksor sometimes months, and Mom and Dad become the ull-timeeeders and the walkers and the poop-scoopers or the next 10-15years.

Te chaos o the holidays is generally not a good time tointroduce a new dog, because he/she needs a lot o time, training

and a regular routine. But i everyone in the household supportsthe idea o getting a dog and is willing to contribute, parents canwrap a dog toy, bowl and a leash to put under the tree. Te amilycan then start researching what kind o dog would be suitable andwhere to nd him/her.A great place to start is ndingdo.ca, a new website launched by

the Canadian Federation o Humane Societies (CFHS). Tis unwebsite provides many tools and advice to help amilies make suretheyre ready or a dog, how to pick the right one and how to makesure its rom a caring, reputable source. Te website will help youdecide whether you should look or a puppy, an adult or maybe asenior, and how to nd the right Fido or your liestyle. Be sure toanswer Fidos 15 questions!

Tere are thousands o wonderul dogs, cats and other animals

at humane societies, SPCAs and rescue groups just waiting to beadopted into their orever homes. Youll nd puppies, adolescents, mature dogs and purebreds too. Te expert sta at a shelter willbe able to tell you a bit about a dogs temperament such as i thedog is good with children, gets along with cats, is ull o energyor preers to relax all day. All o this inormation is invaluable inhelping you make the right decision.

I you really want to buy rom a breeder, you must do yourhomework to make sure you dont unknowingly support a puppymill or backyard breeder. A puppy mill is a breeding operationwhere dogs are mistreated and kept in horrendous conditions.Such places thrive on people making impulse and uninormeddecisions. FindingFido.ca provides the specic advice youneed and the questions you should ask to be able to distinguishcaring, ethical breeders rom disreputable and downright crueloperations. Te bottom line is you must always visit a breederbeore agreeing to buy a puppy, and dont rely solely on websites.

When people make a smart, inormed decision to get a dog, their new riend will enrich their lie in so many ways. But whenpeople make uninormed or impulse decisions, the result isoen heartache, expense and guilt or the people, and sueringor abandonment or the dog. FindingFido.ca will help you do itright. So think careully, choose wisely and love deeply.By Shelagh MacDonald, Program Director, Canadian Federation o

Each o the our perormers wereseasoned proessionals and gave each student a piece o not only

the history o dance, but pieces o the French language to grasp, aer hearing many intriguing stories.

One o the many highlights o the perormance was towardsthe end. Four teachers were randomly selected rom theaudience by the perormers. wo were rom our very own HMSTe lucky teachers were Mr. Power, and Mme. Saunders. Eachteacher was taken backstage, dressed up in an outt chosen bythe perormers and given a scenario. Tey then made their wayback to the stage in ull view o the audience.Mr. Power put on a great show, dressed in a red robe and equippedwith boxing gloves. He rose to the challenge and ollowed hisscenario, dancing around the stage like an experienced boxerBut, even aer an excellent job, it was Mme. Saunders, dressedas Harry Potter, complete with a sorcerers hat, cloak, overlylarge glasses, and a wand, who made it into the top two. Each moment throughout the perormance was wonderul, and

the experience was great. HMS sends many thanks to District 6or the spectacular show!

WHEN IT COMES TO LUMBER WE DELIVER!WHEN IT COMES TO LUMBER WE DELIVER!

DRIVINg ON WINER IRES SAVES lIVESA 2011 study, which compared Quebec road accident statisticsbeore and aer winter tire use became required, shows that inthe past two winters there has been a ve per cent reduction inroad-accident injuries that can be directly attributed to wintertire use. Te research concludes that winter tires prevent about575 road-accident injuries per winter in Quebec. Te study alsoound that vehicle accidents resulting in death or serious injurydeclined by three per cent.

What motorists may not know is that todays high-tech wintertires oer ar more than better traction on snow, ice or slushcovered roadways. Te rubber compounds used in todayssophisticated winter tires deliver better grip in all cold weatherdriving conditions including dry pavement. Te result is adramatic improvement in driver control and traction in allwinter driving conditions, particularly when cornering orbraking.

Drivers who choose to roll on winter tires will notice thedierence in traction when the temperature alls below sevendegrees Celsius, or as soon as they can see their breath.

raditionally, many drivers, particularly those who live incities or towns where the streets are cleared regularly, haveopted or all-season tires to avoid the bi-annual tire changeover.

All-season tires can provide sae all-weather perormance, butwinter tires deliver up to 50 per cent more winter traction. When buying winter tires, motorists should look or the

mountain snowake symbol on the sidewall. ires with thissymbol meet or exceed tire industry snow traction requirements.

Proper tire maintenance and ination are also importantcontributors to sae winter driving.

Motorists should remember that excessive tread wear candiminish traction and, as a result, tread depth should always bechecked at the start o the winter driving season. Drivers whoare unsure i their tires are overly worn should consult their tireretailer to determine i they should be replaced.

Proper tire ination is another winter driving essential. iresthat are under-or-over inated have a smaller ootprint on the

road surace, which lessens their grip. Te result is reducedstopping and handling capabilities and wasted uel.

ire ination pressure can drop quickly during cold snaps.Every ve degrees Celsius change results in about one psi changein pressure, so a temperature drop o 15 degrees Celsius wouldresult in 10 per cent or three psi under-ination. During winter, tire makers recommend measuring tire ination requentlyusing a reliable tire gauge to ensure tires are properly inated tothe vehicle manuacturers recommendation.Learn more about winter tires by visiting betiresmart.ca
