“RECYCLE”As a well known junk (treasure) collector, I am trying to become a

little more disciplined in managing my inventory. About three yearsago, I bought a backhoe to do some major landscaping in preparationor building our new home and some additional work once we weremoved in. Aer two years o useulness, I sold (recycled) the backhoeand bought my newest old tractor. It, o course, has been extremelyuseul and my main man toy, but a number o old implements havegone unused or years and so I recently recycled those to new owners

So my new policy or managing inventory is ... prove that you areuseul within a one to two year period or you are gone!!!“For Sale or rade … One short little old lady!!! Other than writing

malicious stories (see current Musings, I have not ound other useupurposes in over two years!!”Another very good reason or getting rid o surplus equipment (and

people) is to make room or new to me equipment. By later today, I

am hoping to return to the backhoe business. Now this is a relativelysmall attachment or the back o my tractor and not the big monsterthat I had beore.Aer months o walking our woods roads, I have been perturbed by

the condition o signicant sections o the roads. Tere is one sectiono about 100 metres that is just a bog and largely impassable with thetractor. But, I believe that i I ditch it properly or better drainage thatit can be used again. Ten, just aer this area is another 100 metresthat is washed out so badly that 50% o the road is missing and thereare sections eroded down at least our eet. Other than Saint Johnresidents, no one would try to drive on this!!

Trow in about six other small areas o road that are troublesomeand about a hundred places that could use some improvementsand you can see that a small backhoe is just exactly what is neededFortunately, the missus is like me, we hate to see things deteriorateand become useless. It certainly doesn’t make economic sense, butsomehow, having those roads restored to working condition isimportant to my sense o how things should be.When we no longer have the time, energy or money to take care o

what we own or we just no longer want it or need it, then it is the timeto seriously think about giving up our ownership to someone thatwill value and take care o it. How oen do we see individuals holdonto things without providing any care right up to the point wherethey are totally useless and beyond recovery. Please recycle!! 800

HAvINg too muCH oF A gooD tHINg!Tere is no doubt that water is the most vital commodity on the aceo the earth and we are greatly blessed that there has been no shortageo it this year; however the abundance that I have celebrated has lemany olk decidedly disenchanted.

Te major problems appear to be the resulting mould and ungalgrowth and while it is not possible to totally remedy this situation, much can be done to allay the damage. Hanging baskets suer greatly, especially when planted in the sponge like product that retains water,a great invention or a dry summer, but a disaster waiting to happenthis year. When our worthy weather chaps predict more rain on theway it is worth while to park all baskets and potted arrangements inthe shelter o garage or shed, pop the hangers on an upturned bucketto avoid squashing the drapery and allow them to dry out. Cuttingout any aded leaves and dead heading will allow a better ow o air,

critical in dealing with rot and moulds, (this allows you to continuegardening through the wildest o weather).Clearing away detritus rom the plants that have nished blooming,

(though normally done later in the all), and cutting back Siberianand Japanese Iris a little early, will remove those moist conditions thatprovide ritz accommodation or breeding slugs and ear wigs. Tiswill not unduly harm the plants and has the added satisaction o yetanother ‘Fall Job’ done in advance.

Whilst touching on ‘cleaning up’ extreme caution needs to be

exercised in dealing with allen ruit, there are mega numbers owasps, hornets, their cousins & aunts and it seems they love nothingbetter than to burrow into allen ruit and, replete with the juicycontents, wait, ready to spring and sting any unwitting picker upperTese bods can be lethal and a small investment at a medical supplyshop is the perect way to thwart their plans. Extendable ‘claws’, suchas are helpul or patients to grab out o reach items, are actually quite

a bit cheaper than those created or cleaning litter o parking lots etcI keep mine on my tractor and pick up sticks as I mow; it saves a loto stopping and starting.Back to the water and how to deal with the sureit ... just thank God

that we seem to have too much and recall, i you will, the droughtsituation here in Canada some years ago when animals died in theirthousands and crops were reduced to dust. Te thought o carryinga water jug on my head or miles through the Arican jungle rendersme positively joyul to dwell in this verdant and beautiul land. 805

WAtERWoRkSIndoor plumbing is a wonderul thing that we generally neverthink about . . . until it doesn’t work. I vividly remember as achild using the outhouse at my grandparents’ armhouse. It was anovelty and an adventure in the summer, less desirable in winter. And o course there was the summer the hornets claimed it ortheir own! Something one is unlikely to encounter with indoorplumbing.

We (well, mostly Michael) were recently assisting one o ourdaughters who is in the midst o a kitchen renovation. Te naltask or the day was to remove the lower cabinetry in preparationor the arrival o the new ones. Although the cupboardsweren’t much to look at, it turned out they were VERY sturdily constructed. Aer Michael had pooh-poohed the suggestion itmight be necessary to just whack them apart with the hammer

(I think the comment was something like “How crude”), thesolution eventually came down to “lets just whack them apartwith the hammer”, and he embraced it with great enthusiasm. Telast piece to go was the section where the sink had been housed.Te water valve below the sink had been shut o course, but inthe gleeul dismantling o the cupboards an old joint was brokenand water began to spew. Our daughter was quick to head tothe basement and shut o the water or the entire building untilrepairs could be made. Which unortunately took another twohours with trips to three hardware stores to assemble everythingrequired. Done.

Te next day we were at my mother’s or a amily supper and itwas noted that her pump was struggling; diagnosis, waterlogged. So aer supper, gallant as always, Michael heads to the basement

to drain it down. Now this is not a new experience, it issomething he has done multiple times, but never with as muchpizzazz as this time. Tere seemed to be some diculty whenit came time to restart the pump and Michael requested a littlewater be dipped rom the toilet tank so he could prime the pumpas the pressure was not coming up. As I set out to get the water,Michael commenced to unscrew the top o the pump to add thewater. And immediately had a geyser to rival “Old Faithul”! Henot only had water gushing up at him rom the pump (obviously the pump pressure was just ne), but the water hit the ceilingand was also cascading back down on him rom the top, as he

valiantly tried to locate the rightcircuit breaker to shut o thepower while totally blinded by gushing water. And the rest o us were absolutely no help as wewere laughing ar too hard to beable to unction.Mike did o course successully

complete restarting the pump,my mother had her waterback and the basement dideventually dry out. MeanwhileI am earul o Michael’s nextplumbing adventure, since they seem to be escalating. Do I heara drip? 801
