MotHer NatureBy virtue o the act that we use the term Mother Nature weare implying that good ole Mother Nature is like a sweet andkind old grandmother!! However, the reverse is the real truth! She can in act, be crankier than the missus aer getting o thescales!! A recent walk in the woods ollowing a heavy wet snowshowed ole Mother Nature in her true orm.Walking along, we saw a six inch diameter r broken completely

o about six eet rom the ground. Another r was down acrossthe trail also snapped right o. At regular intervals there werebirches, maples and evergreens bowed to the ground under theweight o heavy snow. Some will certainly recover but many arelikely doomed. I would bet that good ole Mother Nature wipedout more trees with one snowall than Mikie did in six monthswith a chainsaw.

O course, in this one walk, we only observed a small raction

o what went on in the whole 170 Acre Wood this is theNauwigewauk version o A A Milnes 100 Acre Wood whereWinnie-the-Pooh is played by the Missus, Christopher Robin isplayed by me, and Te Jet does a remarkable imitation o EeyoreDestructive though she may be (Mother Nature, not the Missus)

aer a resh snow all, the woods are incredibly beautiul. Temissus has been taking some pictures o our woods walks andgee they look really great. Te Jet loves his walks in the woodsand his normally sad expression perks right up when he gets theold nose going. One day recently, Te Jet set two world recordsor deep snow sning. Yup, in just one day he went rom thenormal up to the eyeballs sning to a record up to the earssni in deep snow. Shortly aerwards he broke this record withan almost up to the collar sni. Tats my Boy!!! For being

snoopy, the Jet has no competition ... except or the missus!!So thanks to good ole Mother Nature a walk in the woods has

become a short walk, ollowed by scraping and shaking somepoor tree to lighten the snow burden, short walk - shake tree... you probably get the picture!! Tank you Mother Nature inmaking a simple walk into a beautiul adventure!! 800

HaMPtoN-PIggS Peak NeWSBev Harrison has arrived in Swaziland and is spending mosto his time interviewing the students in Piggs Peak or whomwe will be paying school ees or the upcoming year. Hamptonis well known in Piggs Peak as their sister community that ispaying ees or students who would otherwise be unable toattend school. As a result, upon Bevs arrival, there was a line upo parents and students asking to be put on Hamptons list. Onesuch case is described by Karen Mandy:Her name is Nomphumelelo and she is in Form 4 at PCH. Last

year her ather passed away, leaving her with her step-mum who, shortly aerwards, also passed away. She then went to her aunt.Despite all this, she passed last year with a 1 st - getting an A inEng Lang and B in Lit (both o which impressed me!) Tis yearher aunt chased her rom the house without even her uniorm. What is awesome is that one o the teachers has taken her in ornow and theyve ound her a uniorm - just the school ees le.

Unortunately, not all our stories can have a happy ending. Asthings stand, we are unable to put Nomphumelelo on our list.Based on current students, the total cost o their ees will be inexcess o $40,000 and even that commitment is a leap o aith asthese unds are not currently available. You can appreciate Bevsmost dicult task is telling the many deserving candidates that

we are only able to support a limited number.Bev will soon be meeting with the mayor and council oPiggs Peak or the ocial signing o a ormal Memorandum oUnderstanding between the own o Hampton, own o PiggsPeak, and the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership Committee.Although our Partnership has been in place or a ew years, this agreement ocially lays out some broad principlesand guidelines or sustainable cooperation between ourcommunities. Te document was signed in Hampton at a smallceremony at the Mayors Levee on January 1 where Dr. JohnQuinn was also recognized or his many years o service to thepeople o Hampton. Tis is noteworthy because it was John whorst committed to pay or the education o a student in PiggsPeak throughout high school. You may recognize this as the

genesis o the Starsh Program by which the education o about50 students is now paid. John continues to be a Starsh sponsor, demonstrating that his service to community extends beyondthe boundaries o Hampton to our neighbours in Piggs Peak.

I you would like to make a donation or assist a student likeNomphumelelo by helping pay school ees, we have made itpossible through our Starsh Program. Please visit our websitewww.hamptonpiggspeak.ca (click the link to Starsh Program)or contact me, Mark Bettle, at 832-0003 or Carl MacKenzie at832-2704. 110

HaMPtoN MIDDLe SCHooL NeWSBy Owen PreeperSnow. Snow. Snow. It certainly seems to have been the themeor the last ew weeks! Hampton Middle School students haveenjoyed their h day at home since the Christmas holidays dueto the weather. All this snow has given us lots o opportunityor outdoor winter activities. However, were not so lucky withindoor sports a valve broke in the gym ceiling, ooding andwarping the oorboards. Tis has rendered the gym unusableor the time being. So gym activities have been put on hold: thegirls and boys basketball teams, lunch hour European handbalgames and, o course, Phys. Ed classes.

But do you think that will dampen the HMS Wild Cat spirit?O course not! Students have been well occupied because nowthere seem to be more awesome activities and clubs than everStudents have been having great times sliding on crazy carpetson the hill beside the school, and skiing and snowboarding atPoley Mountain with the ski club. Weve been busy paintingthe schools house colours in the lobby, singing at Mrs. Fosterskaraoke, helping out as peer helpers, going to chess club andspelling bees, and much more.

Also, a spectacular event put together by Mme. Page with helprom ellow teachers and students took place on Valentines Day

Inspired by Quebec restaurants, Mme. Page created an incredibleFrench ca, complete with music and ood, or post-intensiveFrench students. Invited guests were M. Pelletier, Mme. Austinand M. Page.

We at HMS have also been hard at work making our scienceprojects or the upcoming science air. Students and theirprojects will be chosen rom their classes to participate in theschools air, rom which they have a chance to go to the districtair then maybe even on to the provincial level.

With all the amazing work put into providing these greaactivities or students to enjoy every day, I think HamptonMiddle School is pretty great.

UsuallySmudge only interrupts her nap in a sunbeam or next to the reor periodic visits to her ood dish or the litter box.

I am hoping that once we have ended this 13 week walking

challenge that the habit o being more physically active will havebecome ingrained into a on-going liestyle change. Tere was atime (beore Ossekeag) that I routinely walked about 20 milesper week (a 5 mile route about our times per week). Tat gotpushed aside with becoming a business owner, when I was toobusy. It eels good to get moving again.

I had not intended this article to be devoted to our walkingchallenge. Te plan was to do a brie update on how ar we hadwalked and move on . . . no pun intended. I had a whole buncho ideas on what to share this week. Perhaps the story o a amilymember who got stuck in the driveway twice in one day. OrMikie ditching the tractor while pulling said amily memberout o the ditch the second time. No, maybe Mikes commentabout someone would have to be crazy to go up on that roo to

shovel it o . . . and then the next day there he was, up on thatroo shoveling it o. Or my utile search or a roo rake, whichresulted in Mikie being up on that roo with a shovel. But Imout o space . . . Lie is like riding a bicycle - in order to keep your balance, youmust keep moving. ~Albert Einstein. 801
