SIMPLEOther than the Missus, my lie is not generally caught up with alot o rustration. Oh there are many minor ones here and therebut they are small, short lived and easy to overlook. But, everynow and then what originally appears to be simple turns out tobe, well ... anything but simple!! Restoring an old woods trailerwas going to be simple, replace two rotting tires with good onesand I would be all set. How easy was that going to be?? Even orMikie ... a piece o cake!! Last all a helpul reader provided mewith three tires all mounted on rims ... the end is near!!Well the new rims wouldnt t my old trailer hey no big dea

... just as I expected!! So I spent many hours during the wintertrying to get the locking hubs o, as they were badly rusted tothe split-rims. Split-rims are older types where the tire slideson the rim and then a piece is set in against the tire, hopeullylocking the tire into the rim. Okay, nally now just pop these

tires o?? Hours and hours o beating o rust and those dangedtires wouldnt let go. Pressure rom a tire jack jammed into adoor rame and ... the door rame is moving but not those tiresHow about using the ront loader o my tractor?? Te tractorwent up but the tires didnt go down!!

So my next strategy was to remove the rims o the trailer andtake all the rims to a pro to break down the tires and then I wouldbe home ree?? My air gun couldnt budge the well rusted lugnuts!! Te attempt to remove them manually with a strong arm(a long bar ... not my biceps) didnt work as the trailer was toolight and the wheel would just rock back and orth. UndeterredI simply removed the whole wheel and brake hub assembly. Yes... now o to a pro and the nal easy steps. About 20 minutes owrestling with a pro and one old tire surrendered and came o

the rim. Yahoo!!!!A ew minutes examination and the pro suggested that the rim

was badly rusted, installing split rim tires is very hazardous andbeen responsible or more than one death.

Aer 10 months o o and on work, and I realized that thisproject was still ar rom over.Te amous Red Green would say, I the women dont nd you

handsome, they should at least nd you handy. Te unamousMikie would say, Persistence can even overcome stupidity.

Tis trailer will ride again, somehow, someday!! o becontinued!! 800

o MuLCH or no o MuLCH, Ha IS HEQuESIon?

Tere are many dierent types o mulch available to gardeners today

serving several purposes. Te increased popularity o these materialsstemmed mainly rom the attractive notion that many in thelandscaping and garden supply businesses put great store in; that orendering the whole aspect o gardening an easy, one stop method ohaving a garden without the need o maintaining it. Te theory beingthat once a our inch layer o mulch is placed around all plantings theweeds will never again surace and one can practically live in the lawnchair, stirring only or personal sustenance and touring admiringneighbours around an immaculate property. Suce to say nothing isor should be that easy!

Te major, and possibly only activity that any mulch engages inis that o decomposition, taking the nutrients o the soil away romthe surrounding plant lie in order to do so, thus jeopardizing theirgrowth. I the desire to use mulch as a weed deterrent is the choice you

make, then be sure to leave a six inch border o open soil around eachplanting and cover that ground with a rich layer o good compostmixed with well composted manure. Tat small area will need handweeding, a satisying job that also brings one into close contact withthe plants and gives the opportunity to deal with unwanted slugs etc.,beore they become a monster problem. Mulches generally oer snughomes to many undesirables and need to be regularly monitored.

Te chie advantage o mulch is that, when applied on wet groundit will keep that moisture in the soil, which when gardening on a welldrained area or during drought conditions, is a blessing. Te Cedarmulch is also great or pathways as it is much slower than other typesto decompose.Gardening without the use o mulch has several benets, with open

soil a surprising number o volunteer plants will arrive in the plotdropped by passing birds, small animals or the balmy breezes osummer; these gis really are a joy to the gardener who is willingto spend a good bit o time enjoying close contact with the soil andits bounty. A well weeded garden without mulch also provides thebest environment or clumps o perennials to expand, thus allowinguture divisions to share with riends or to donate to next yearsCommunities in Bloom plant sale.Aim not or perection, enjoy the journey.

No occupation is so delightul to me as the culture o the earth andno culture comparable to that o the garden..... Tomas Jeerson. 805

HaMPon PIggS PEaK nEWSHampton is an amazing community who would have thoughtback in 2005 that a small community in NB could provide somuch love, caring and support to little rural communities inSwaziland. What an amazing journey your community hastaken. I know the people in Piggs Peak and surrounding areaeel your love.

Debby Warren, Executive Director o AIDS Moncton, expressed this sentiment in response to the recent article aboutthe contribution the artistic community is making to the missiono the Hampton-Piggs Peak Partnership.

As most readers know, our main initiative is to provide schoolees or the youth in Piggs Peak. Te success o this program isdue in large part to the support that has been provided by alllevels o schools in Hampton, primary through high school. Tisspring, a Hampton High School Starsh undraiser collectedover $2600, allowing the school to sponsor eight students.More recently, HHS teacher Laura Myers inormed us thatthe graduates chose to donate the $464.75 oering rom theirBaccalaureate service to the Partnership.

Like our artists, the students and teachers in Hampton havebecome tightly woven into the abric o our Partnership. But oureorts have oen involved those in our extended community as

well. A couple weeks ago I was delighted to receive the ollowingletter rom Mrs. Andrea Lewis, a teacher at Belleisle RegionalHigh School.

In early May, Mr. Bev Harrison came to Belleisle RegionalHigh School to speak to the students and sta about the StarshProject and Hamptons role in assisting young people in PiggsPeak, Swaziland in their eorts to attend school. Many o Mr.Harrisons listeners were immediately touched by the plight oyoung people in that country.

Tat same day, students began discussing what they could doto help. Many suggestions arose, with some larger projects beingtabled or consideration in September. Te students decidedto create the Belleisle Buskers, a group o talented youngmusicians who would perorm at lunchtime in the caeteriaand lobby areas. Asmusic was played andsingers were singing, the empty music caseat their eet quicklylled with change andthe occasional ve-dollar bill. Tis projectwas called Changeor Piggs Peak, andstudents and sta wereencouraged to donatethe change rom theirlunch money andperhaps orsake buyinga cookie or a bag o chips that day.

Over the course o ve lunch hours, as the sound o guitarpiano, violin, and voices lled the halls o the school, over $380

was raised or the Hampton/Piggs Peak partnership. Studentstaking part were: Geena Sipkema, Levi Sipkema, ChelseaGoguen, eagan Anderson, Lynn Reicker, Cecilia AsbridgeHaley McMillan, and Daniel Ganong.

Belleisle Regional High is looking orward to more unundraising activities like this in the new school year. And we look orward to having BRHS as an integral part o our

Partnership! For more inormation, contact me, Mark Bettle, at832-0003 or visit our website www.hamptonpiggspeak.ca. 110

a LILE KnoWLEDgE . . .I am sure you have heard the saying A little knowledge is a dangerousthing. Well, let me tell you . . .I am on the Board o Directors o a local early childhood/parenting

organization here in Hampton, the Hampton Alliance or LielongLearning. As part o that, I recently undertook to review and updatethe website. Aer tracking down the login inormation I reviewed thecontent to determine what needed to be updated and did the changesin the soware tool. Te next step is to publish, which will actuallyupdate the website. Hmmm . . . it did a preview o the site, but thereis an error message and I am unable to get the site to update. Grrr.Te next day I am at the oce and think I may have the answer, so

I log in to try it. Except . . . the I Manager (that would be Mikie)has the security settings such that I cannot access it at all. Seems hedoesnt want people (especially me!) playing around on Ossekeag

equipment. So I have to wait until I am home.Tat evening, back to the site I go, but my brainwave turns out to bea dud and I still cannot get the new inormation uploaded to the site.Sigh . . . later in the evening, Mike was on the desktop computer so Ired up the laptop to give it another try. Wow! Suddenly I am acedwith a whole selection o buttons and options and bells and whistles oall kinds I never saw when logged in through the desktop computer!Tis is too cool. Wonder what this does. Ooh, and I can do this. Tesegraphics are amazing. I start playing around in there, having a greattime. Redesign the header, add some graphics, upload the logo . . .wonder how this would look? Lets see. Hit Publish, just like I didpreviously when on the desktop computer. Hooray, it looks like it isgoing to work. Except . . . why am I not getting a preview like I didpreviously? Oh, no! Cancel! Cancel! Cancel! oo late. It published.

A lovely newly designed header . . . no content. None. Nada. Not aword. Tis is denitely not good.

Quickly go back into the tool and put a Under constructionmessage on the site and go or my evening walk (need to dosomething to lower the blood pressure aer that bit o drama). WhenI return I successully track down all o the previous content, updatethe inormation, publish to the site and by the next day everythingis back in operation - but with the new header and graphics. Whew!

What did I learn. Not a darn thing. Computers and sowareprograms just beg to be explored, and i dont we will never getany better. Oh, and the origin o the quote? A little knowledge is adangerous thing. So is a lot. Albert Einstein. 801
