ECORSE Police have little information on those whofired shots into a crowd Sunday morning, leaving a youngwoman dead and at least one other person wounded outsidean after-hours club in a building owned by a city council-woman.

Chanel Weddington, a 22-year-old city resident, was shotin the upper body at about3:35 a.m. outside the build-ing at 3740 12th St. She wasrushed to Wyandotte HenryFord Hospital in a policesquad car, where she diedshortly after.

A 38-year-old Southfieldman who was shot wastaken to Oakwood Hospital& Medical Center inDearborn and admitted forsurgery. His condition wasunknown yesterday.

Also, another man, 30,might have been shot in theleg but police have not con-firmed that, Public SafetyDirector Gerald Champagnesaid Monday.

A fourth person believedto be injured in the meleewas not involved in theshooting, police said.

Champagne said thewoman was taken in a police car to a hospital that doesnttypically receive shooting victims because of a sense ofurgency.

Fire Sgt. Scott Douglas said his department was not noti-fied of the incident. While emergency medical serviceshave been outsourced to HealthLink, the Fire Departmentis supposed to be told of all medical runs, Douglas said.

He said he was brought up to speed on the situationwhen he reported for his shift at 8 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters in Ecorse often respond to high-prioritycalls such as shootings because there is sometimes a delayin HealthLinks response time, Douglas said.

The woman should have been taken in an ambulance toOakwood Hospital & Medical Center in Dearborn, he said.

We couldve tried to control the bleeding, but I dontknow where the victim was hit, he said. ... Its one ofthose things. (I) dont want to be an armchair quarterback. It depends on the circumstances.

Councilwoman Stacy Wheeler owns the building thathouses The Place, reportedly being used as an after-hourssocial club. Champagne said officers spoke with her at thescene and she has been cooperating. He added that therewas no evidence of any illegal activity at the club or thatanything related to the shooting happened inside.
