TAYLOR Despite a second WayneCounty Circuit Court judges order toaccept an $8.1 million federal grant,Mayor Jeffrey Lamarand is ready toface a contempt charge.

On Monday, Judge KathleenMacDonald ordered the mayorto accept an $8.1 million Staffingfor Adequate Fire andEmergency Response grantto bring 32 firefighters backto work and gave him a 24-hour deadline.

    A contempt hearing was

scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday.Notification of Lamarandsacceptance of the FederalEmergency ManagementAgency grant by Tuesdaywould have canceled thecourt date.

Instead, Lamarand saidhe is prepared to go to jailto make a stand against theCity Council, whose resolu-tion directing him to acceptthe grant has been sup-ported in court twice.

Obviously that is thepossibility that lies in frontof this, he said yesterdayafternoon. I cannot fullycomply with the order to accept unconditionally the $8.1million grant. This isnt about putting firefighters back towork. This is about members of the City Council attempt-ing to ramrod this city with five votes.

If I dont take a stand now and fight this as much as Ican, they will attempt to keep doing this on the next thing, and the next thing.

Lamarand said the two Wayne County Circuit Courtjudges did not base their rulings on separation of powersand the procedure of overriding a mayoral veto in a strongform of government.

If this is the case, councils could pass illegal orders allday long until they are challenged, he said.

In a letter to FEMA yesterday, Lamarand wrote that thecity lacks funds to pay the non-federal share of projectcosts for the grant, which is required for applicants of thegrant. The two-year grant would pay to bring back 32 laid-off fire fighters dedicated to fire suppression.
