MARSHALL An Allen Park couple and their adult sondied in a single-car crash in Calhoun County shortly after 3p.m. Monday.

The couple William Gatesy Jr., 55, and Dawn Gatesy,53 were in a 2013 Ford Explorer with their son, WilliamGatesy III, 28, and two other passengers.

The two passengers who survived, Eva Petterle, 81, alsoof Allen Park, and Shaun Crawford, 27, of Detroit, weretaken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo fortreatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Calhoun County policesaid the Explorer was in thepassing lane on eastboundI-94 near 13 Mile Road whenthe vehicle went out ofcontrol, crossed the right

lane of traffic and careeneddown an embankmentbefore striking a tree vio-lently.

I really cant speculateas to what the cause was,Marshall Township FireChief Steve Riggs said yes-terday. The car went offthe road and hit that treereally hard. Its especiallytragic when there are mul-tiple fatalities.

Capt. Steve Eddy of theCalhoun County Sheriff sDepartment said a medicalissue could have been inplay, but authorities wontknow for about a month.Reconstructing the accident scene will also take quite

some time, he said. This is the third fatal down the list, he said. We down-

loaded the information from the computer, but we wont getto it soon.

The SUV reportedly hit the tree so hard that the engineseparated from the rest of the vehicle, which came to reston a country road that runs next to the highway.

Funeral arrangements for the family are still being dis-cussed and will be handled by Martenson Funeral Home.

Gatesy Jr. had retired from the city of Allen Park, wherehe had worked in the water department from 1977 until2005. He also was a well-known Michigan Amatuer HockeyAssociation and high school hockey official. Dawn Gatesyhad worked as a paraprofessional for Wyandotte PublicSchools for the past 16 years.
