By Our Staff ReporterThe incidence of fireworks-

related injuries during Diwali isincreasing each year. Thehands (40%), eyes (20%), andthe head and face (20%) arethe body areas most often in-volved.

Of these, eye injuries are themost serious and difficult tocure and can often lead to com-plete loss of vision.

Lacerations, chemical inju-ries and embedding of foreignbodies are the most commoninjuries to the eye from fire-works, with approximately onethird of the injuries resulting inpermanent blindness.

Dr. Vasumathy Vedantham(Medical Director, RadhatriNethralaya, Hindi PracharSabha Street, T. Nagar, Ph:2433 2229, 2431 1550) advicesparents, community leadersand children to be educated onthe hazards of fireworks andprevention as well as the firstaid treatment of injuries, espe-cially those involving the eyes.

She has the following adviceto offer:

1. Wear eye protection suchas plain glass that covers theeyes up to the eyebrows whilebursting crackers or watchingfireworks.

2. Stock a first aid kit with arigid eye shield and antibioticeye drops. It is available inmedical shops.

3. Ensure that children areallowed to fire crackers onlyunder adult supervision.

How to protect your eyes while lightingcrackers

4. Check the area before ig-niting fireworks and removeany flammable and combus-tible materials.

5. Always have a bucket ofwater at hand to extinguishany incipient fire or for rinsingthe affected area of the body.

6. Follow all safety precau-tions mentioned in the packetof the firework.

7. Use a thick agarbathi (in-cense stick), specially madefor firing crackers to ignite fire-works. It burns without anopen flame, provides a saferdistance between your handsand the fireworks and alsomakes the wick to ignite slowlythereby giving you time tomove away before the fireworkbursts.

8. Do not treat even minoreye injury as harmless. Whenin doubt, consult an eye doctorimmediately.

Chemical burns to the eye:Following intrusion of chemi-

cals into the eyes especiallywhen rubbing eyes after touch-ing crackers or gun powder, symptoms such as pain, sen-sitivity to light, severe water-ing of eyes, reddened eyeballs, and swollen eyelids can occur.

It is advisable to wash handsproperly before handling thepatient’s eye.

Open the affected eyelidsgently with your fingers.

Check if the eyeballs are in-tact or if there is a perforatinginjury with collapse of eyeballs.

If the eyeball is intact, flush

the eye gently cool running coolwater to help clean and cool theeye and prevent further chemi-cal reaction. The best way todo it is to hold the eye under ashower, or pour water into theeye using a clean container.Keep the eye open and as widefor as long as possible whileflushing with water. Continueflushing for at least 15 min-utes.

Do not bandage the eye butapply a shield to it.

Take the patient to an eyedoctor immediately after thefirst aid treatment.

As a general rule, in cases ofsevere pain, reduced vision, ordiscoloration (black eye), fol-lowing a cracker injury, seekemergency medical care. Anyof these symptoms could meaninternal eye damage and mightneed emergency interventionfor preservation of vision loss.

NO HOLDS BARREDPHAILIN

If Japan had, in 1945, a device to detect the approachingAmerican planes loaded with the first two exploratorymega destroyers named ‘Little Boy’ and ‘Big Boy’, to betested on mere human beings on the philosophy trotted outby a great thinker that all is fair in love and war, the historyof the world would have been what it is not now. The poorJaps did not know what hit them, and a total of nearly fourhundred thousand people died in a jiffy to bring the SecondWorld War to its end.

The typhoon or cyclone Phailin was not so lucky becausewe had our all-knowing Meteorological wizards warning usin time that Odisha and Andhra Pradesh (Seemandhra orTelengana are, to them, mere names) would have windyand watery killers soon! This galvanised the unruly anddisparate into one huge army of protectors who threw intothe sea their rivalries and put up a dyke of humanity, ledby the handsome Chief Minister of Odisha, Navin Patnaik, the personification of calmness who had, with the firstwhiff, ordered the populace to evacuate and shift to theemergency shelters provided by the government. Theseshoreline shelters perhaps saved several thousand refu-gees from the invader Phailin which might have swallowedlakhs of people in its gluttony for non-vegetarian food. Theprotective force of the State rose like a man with thehandsome Patnaik who appeared on TV screens as onewho knew his onions and was calmness incarnate.

Except trees killing some, compared to the godly deathsof pilgrims in temples where, short of banning “darshans”,there is no way death can be prevented if people arearrayed in riotness instead of righteousness. Man is thechampion defiler and, when he pollutes the so-called holyrivers by bathing in them, he pollutes the water making ittoxic for others. So he sometimes gets his desserts. Alongwith such fellows the innocents too sometimes get pun-ished by nature alias God. Let us ban organized picnics toplaces like Uttaranchal because God has vacated them.Who wouldn’t?

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Sir, We are residentsof Jeevanan-damStreet, West K.K.Nagar. This Street isan important link con-necting Vembuli-amman Koil Streetwith East and WestVannier Street. VaniVidyala and Meenak-shi College are locatedon Vembuliamman

Sewage water stagnation in Jeevanandam Streethinders residents and road users

Koil Street and this road is the main approach for both theschool and the college students. Thousands of vehicles passthrough this road as this is the main connection from ArcotRoad to K.K. Nagar and Ashok Pillar. For more than twomonths drainage water has been oozing out from a leak in thepipeline and flooding the street.

The stagnation is also causing an awful stench throughoutthe day and posing a safety and health hazard to nearbyresidents and road users. This has also caused sudden spurtin proliferation of mosquitoes and a number of children andelderly residents of the area have been afflicted with fever, diarrhea and other such symptoms. A number of our Resi-dents’ Association members and also individual residentshave lodged several complaints with the concerned officialsin our ward office of Metrowater and Chennai Corporation butno remedial action has been taken so far. We are also sendingsome photographs of the present condition of JeevanandamStreet for publication. We hope that after the publishing ofthis letter in Mambalam Times, the authorities will wake upand take remedial measures to plug the leakage and rid theresidents of the hardship. – Residents, Jeevanan-damStreet, West K.K. Nagar

Sir, I am a regular reader of Mambalam Times and Ifollow your articles of public interest very closely.

One such aspect is your reporting of encroachmentsin public places. I would like to point out that a hugegenerator belonging to a private enterprise is blockingthe pavement outside Vasantham Marriage Hall, AryaGowda Road, close to its intersection with SrinivasaPillai Street. The generator is kept on the pavement atthe busy intersection depriving the road users of theirrightful space. To add to that, there is an obstructive wallprotecting the generator which effectively prevents thepedestrian from using the pavement and forcing themto walk on the busy road and risk their lives. I have oftenwitnessed senior citizens struggling to cross the roadhere. I appeal to the concerned authorities to takeimmediate action in getting the generator removed fromthe pavement. – S Rajagopalan, 16 Umapathy StreetExtension, West Mambalam.

NOTA can increase percentage of pollingand bring down bogus votes

Sir, - This refers to the ‘No Holds Barred’ column byM. A. Sadanand titled ‘None of the above—NOTA’published last week in Mambalam Times. NOTA is a‘notable’ development to have happened in the elec-toral process of the democratic India. While the NOTAoption will force the netas of political parties to thinkmany times before they come up with their choice of‘NOTABLE’ candidates, for those voters who used toshun the elections (not vote) on the basis of the ‘creden-tials’ of the candidates, the NOTA will make themrethink, for, they can now express their dissent bypushing the NOTA button. NOTA in effect will alsominimize bogus voting. NOTA will effectively precludeNOT ABLE candidates from the contest. Thus, theNOTA option is NOTABLE on many counts.— V.S.Jayaraman, 31, Motilal Street, T. Nagar
