TELEGRAM MURDEREDLong long ago when Suresh was a Std. 12 student in a

fourth rate school in Madras, he went through the motionsof writing the exams and returned home in Kannur await-ing the inevitable which came in good time without hisnumber in the newspapers.

To cheer him up, I, who had seen an English picture theprevious day titled ‘Come September’, sent Suresh atelegram repeating the name of the picture. Suresh toldme later that it was the best greetings he had earned in hislife until then. His laughter was so infectious that hisparents and my parents caught on to the side- splittinglaughter boom and the failure was forgotten!

The young chap squeezed through in September and, after most of that day’s laughers had done their stint, departed. This Septemberanian later took some stupiddegree, conquered the Gulf and retired with oodles of cashand several real estate properties all over South India.

Telegrams could spark the latent pearls of wisdom lyingin the dark unfathomed caves of the ocean floor. I am notquoting Grey’s ‘Elegy in a Country Church Yard’, but a factof life.

During the Second World War when Hitler, Churchill,Mussolini, Truman, Tojo and Stalin went roaring mad, mymother and my young brother were in Nairobi. As all shipswere assigned for war effort, they, especially my motherwho was the daughter of a prince with royal blood, took therisk of crossing the mighty Arabian Sea in a country craftwith my younger brother, and landed in Kathiavar State, which is now Modyland, on the 40th day. They managed tocrawl to Madras by train and sent a telegram from thereto Konnur that they would arrive by the Mangalore Mailthe next day.

Who cares for telegrams during a mere world war! Thenext day mother and brother, rather peeved at not findinga welcome arch and the local mayor at the station or us,engaged a jutka and hobbled to our home two miles fromthe station, wondering why the dear ones had ignored hertelegram. Nambiar, the non-agenarian telegram delivererat the local post office, saw mother and chugged up thesteep gradient of the road where our palace stood.

Nambiar, panting, welcomed the party at our gate witha smile and the telegram.

Mummy and Kanthu, my nine-year-old brother, werelike a vision and the whole night we cried and cried and criedthanks to the telegram that walked from Madras to ourhouse in Pallikunnu.

Telegrams, if they don’t reach the destination, are use-ful. People will be happier after July 16, 2013!
