NO HOLDS BARREDBy M.A. SADANAND

Handsome is as handsome does, said an idle poet whenhe had one too many at an arrack shop.

But, without the great elixir, long-retired Chief JusticeVerma of the Supreme Court joined me, another hand-some fellow, in telling the blood-thirsty inheritors ofMacaulay’s Penal Code pallbearers that death is not apunishment but the logical end to life, and none has theright to hasten it except the volunteer who wants it, andthat the State is not that a volunteer.

Even the suicidal chap who tries to escape from thisbeautiful world would be hauled up by Macaulay’s hench-men if the chap does not succeed. So, Miss Delhi has, whileher life was plucked out by byped beasts, coaxed thealmighty Government of India, founded on the tenets ofMahatma Gandhi, Chief Justice Verma and a good chapnamed Sadanand, to delete ‘death’ as a punishment from allstatutes in force in this country.

Justice Baghavathy came close to doing it by authoringthe ‘rarest of rare murders’ deserving the Indian rope trick, but not defining what the rare condiment is. The greathumanist and intellectual colossus Justice V. R. KrishnaIyer, during his innings in the Supreme Court, hadno opportunity to rule on the legality of murder by law, forI am sure that he was and is a big cut above the otherinhabitants of the billion-plus country and he would havedeleted ‘death’ from all the statutes extant, and prohibitedit until kingdom come. Killing is immoral whether throughrape or rope.
