TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK
TAMIL CINEMA AND MUSIC - 29Dhandapani Desikar had a tough time during the recording
of his songs for the Gemini ‘Nandanar’. Vasan made him singmany songs repeatedly in the recording theater before he feltsatisfied and okayed them, much to the discomfort, disgust, dejection and even anger of the famed singer! Indeed Desikarstopped talking to Vasan for a long time thereafter!
Desikar’s most admirable asset was his excellent and melo-dious voice. According to Mr. Fielden, the first Director-Generalof All India Radio, Desikar’s voice was the only one among theClassical Carnatic musicians of that day acceptable, accord-ing to the ‘voice culture’ standards of Classical Western Music. He described the others as ‘mere crooners!”.
Vasan created sensation when he announced a “Ten Thou-sand Rupees - Song Contest” for ‘Nandanar’. It was the firsttime such contest was launched in Indian Film History! Manycould not believe it. Ten thousand rupees was a mega buckfortune in 1943! The rules were simple. One had to get a coupongiven along with a ticket at any cinema where the movie wasbeing screened. The coupon-holder had to select ‘The ThreeBest Songs’ in the movie and enter them in the coupon in theorder of his preference. The coupon then had to be deposited ina box kept at the movie theater. That was all! If more than onecorrect solution was submitted, the prize money would bedivided among the winners. Vasan had deposited the list con-taining the correct solution in a sealed envelope with the IndianBank, First Line Beach, Madras, on the day before “Nandanar”was released.
The contest generated enormous public interest and enthu-siasm. In addition, it sold tickets contributing to the box-officesuccess of “Nandanar”!
“Nandanar” was a major success of 1943 when Madras wascaught in the web of the Japanese bomb scare during theSecond World War (1939-1945). Indeed the city was evacuatedfor a short time in 1942, which came to be known as “ theEvacuation Period”. Real estate values crashed and manyhouses sported “TO LET” boards with no takers.
Indeed a weekly came up with a famous cartoon depictingtwo villagers walking around the city and noticing the boards. One says. “I wonder who this Mr. Tolet Dorai is, owning so manyhouses in the city! Must be a rich ‘Dorai’!”
Ra. Krishnamurti (Kalki), who by now had promoted his ownsuccessful weekly ‘Kalki’ after splitting with Vasan, reviewedthe film. He took exception to a comedy scene which he calledas vulgar and even obscene. In that scene a rat enters a man’sdhoti and he jumps around while the rat is active inside hisnether garment!
Fortunately, VHS prints of ‘Nandanar’ are available in thevideo market. Some twenty years ago, a LP-Record of the filmsongs was released but sadly, no audio cassette tape wasbrought out. It’s still not too late...
——————————The Origins of Playback Singing
The voice-lending off-screen ‘playback’ singing system ispart and parcel of the Indian motion picture. Indeed suchsingers who sing behind the screen are themselves as muchstars as their on-screen colleagues. Lata Mangeshkar, AshaBhonsle, Shamshad Begum, Geetha (Roy) Dutt, MohamedRafi, Mukhesh, Kishore Kumar, S. P. Balasubramaniam, P. B.Sreenivos, A. M. Raja, T. M. Soundararajan, K. J. Jesudas, P.Susheela, Jikki (P.G. Krishnaveni), Chitra, S. Janaki, andmany others enjoy as much fame and name as the stars andactors.
Balu, as S. P. Balasubramaniam is affectionately known, isa household name not only in India but also abroad like Americaand wherever South Indians live. Indeed in New York there isa SPB Fans Association!
Interestingly, there was a period when such playback sing-ers were anonymous and received no credit either in the film oron the labels of gramophone records. Slowly the tide turned

TAILORING
By M. A. SADANANDNO HOLDS BARRED Jyotsna, the Naroda trial judge, has created
judicial history by binning for life 32 for thepost-Godhra carnage, when she could haveboosted the rope industry by going thebarbarian noose happy way. I think PratibhaPatil’s love of life that had earlier saved 34 onthe death row has percolated into the minds ofthe trial courts and Jyotsna is the first ofPratibha’s converts. Good.
Foolish Kasab should have needled his amicuscuriae lawyer to jump the queue to get hisappeal posted and evaded the rope-trick beforeher retirement. When you want to take a chapslife trough the rigmarole of law, the Stateshould not be guilty of going on a Rip VanWinkle snooze that kills the killer in slowmotion.
I hope that the new President who had cometo the city last week to meet me and perhaps afew thousand lawyers to celebrate the 150-year existence of the Madras High court, will berecharged with love of life, kindness andrecognition of ordinary human foibles and takean oath that his 5 years on the throne of RaisnaHill will not be marred by the spillage ofhuman blood, even if the mercy petitioner bea combination of Ghengiz Khan, Attila the Hun,Hitler, Truman,Tojo et al.
