TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 18Another film of G. Ramanathanwhich attracted attentionwas

a social comedy ‘Kathanayaki’. It was one of the Indian moviegeniusesK. Ramnoth’s films made for the Salem-basedmoviemogul T.R. Sundaram of Modern Theatres. The romanticcomedy had Padmini and M.N. Rajam as the female leads withT. R. Ramachandran, the famed comedian star and characteractor,as Padmini’s heart-throb. The story had a dramacompany as the background for its theme. Padmini leaveshome and joins the troupe and the owner (TRR) falls for her.She faces many problems and how the couple solve theproblems formed the rest of the story while Rajam, as herfriend, also contributes to the interest.

This film had an impressive cast with ace comedianThangavelu, then making his way to the top. The risingcomediansA. Karunanidhi, S. Rama Rao and others were wellsupported by K.K. Soundar, M.R. Santhanam, T.K.Ramachandran and V.P.S.Mani as other Modern Theatres‘stock actors’.

Screenplay and dialogues were by T. K. Govindan who wasfairly active and prominent during those years but today he isnot remembered except by old timers.

Lyrics were by Thanjai Ramaiah Das, Suradha andKannadasan who got his first break for writing songs thanksto Ramnoth in ‘Kanniyin Kaathali’.

Music was by the melody maker G. Ramanathan and songswere rendered P. Leela, A.M. Raja, Swarnalatha, Rani, S.C.Krishnan, D.B. Ramachandran and V.T. Rajagopal.

Thanks to the drama troupe background-story, there werequite a few drama scenesand dances. One song ‘Namma idlysambaaar’ became popular. A duet ‘Karpanai ulaginiley’ filmedon Padmini and Ramachandran was a hit(Voices A.M. Rajaand P. Leela). The song about ‘Idly sambaaar’ was byS.C.Krishnan who was known for his comedy songs.

Dances were composed by A. K. Chopra and Gopalakrishnan. The film was only an average success but the songs becamepopular.

Another film which attracted much attention and box officesuccesswas ‘Kaveri’ (1955) for which music was contributedby both G. Ramanathanand Viswanathan-Ramamurthi. Thisfilm has an interesting back story, as they say, which is notknown to many, and is worthnarrating at some length.

SP. Letchumanan Chettiar, popularly known in old Madrasfilm and social circles as ‘Lena Chettiar’ or simply as ‘Lena’,contributed much to the growth of Tamil Cinema in the earlydays as a talent scout and producer. He began his life as abusinessperson in his native Chettinad dealing in used cars ofthe expensive variety and asa ‘drama contractor’. He createdhistory when he printed handbills in Tamil about used cars formany of his rich clients in Chettinad who could not read English. This novelty attracted much attention.

In those days, ‘drama contractors’ used to stage what wasknown as ‘special dramas’. There were plays organised invillages and small towns featuring popular stage actors suchas M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar. Actors who were notassociated with any ‘Boys Company’ were engaged by thesecontractors for a fee. Lena was one such contractor who wenton to become successful. (Of course, many black sheep in thetrade ran away with the sale proceeds).

MKT acted in Lena’s popular play ‘Pavalakodi’ along withstar actress S. D. Subbulakshmi. The play was a hit not onlyin the Tamil-speaking districts of South India but also in SriLanka, Malaysia and other places in the Far East. WhenBhagavathar had made enough money to launch his first film,Lena, a persuasive man, managed to bring him on board hiscompany and offered to produce the film himself. He convincedMKT of the dangers of turning producer when he knew littleabout the industry. Pavalakodi (1934), directed by the sadlyneglected Indian film pioneerK. Subramanyam turned out tobe a big hit. With this Lena settled down in Madras and startedhis own company Krishna Pictures. His office was located onThanikachalam Street in T. Nagarand was a well-knownlandmark in the city then.

When Bhagavathar returned from prison after being incar-cerated for nearly 30 months in the sensationalLakshmikantham Murder Case, he attempted to stage acomebackwhich did not prove successful. Lena wanted torelaunch MKT under his banner with a story called ‘Bhairavi’about a musician who had fallen on hard times. The story goesthat the musician, an expert in the raga Bhairavi, pledges theraga to a rich man for a sum of money under the condition thathe would not sing the raga until he repaid the money! The storywas written by the noted Tamil filmmaker A.S.A. Sami basedon a real musician, an expert in the raga Shankarabharanam. However, Lena had second thoughts after the failure ofBhagavathar in other films like ‘Raja Mukthi’. Therefore, hedropped the project and launched a new production‘Kaveri’written by Sami and directed by the noted Telugu and Tamilfilm director of the day D. Yoganand, who had trained undermaestro L.V. Prasad.

Sivaji Ganesan was by then an iconic figure of Tamil Cinemaand he played the hero with Padmini and Lalitha as the twowomen in love with him, one being a dancer and the other aprincess. (To be continued)

By V.S. JayaramanEven as family relationships

are coming under strain forvarious reasons, we unknow-ingly shower love and affectionon someone or something to-tally unknown or hitherto un-connected to us. Such love oraffection, however, shakes usup violently as and when theyhappen.

Such is a story of three kit-tens which were born in ourresidential compound aboutfive months back. They used toplay together and grew up drink-ing their mother’s milk. Sincewe stay in the ground floor, these kittens used to frequentour backyard. We used to offer

A divine connection!

them milk twice a day. Themoment they heard the soundof our back door opening, theywould come running and waiteagerly for us to satiate theirpalate. This was going on forsometime.

Suddenly, one day, two of thekittens and the mother catwent missing.

The third kitten continuedto remain in our complex andbuilt a special bond with mywife and used to follow herwhenever she made her pres-ence felt at the backyard forcarrying out some householdchore.

One morning, as usual, it hadits morning fill of milk and went

off. Later in the day when mywife went to the back yard anumber of times, it never ap-peared or could be spotted. Itdid not come in the eveningeither to drink milk.

When the same thing hap-pened the next morning, we gotworried and went looking for itaround our apartment. Notfinding it in its usual places, wegot depressed thinking it hadprobably found a new home orprobably lost its way after go-ing out. My wife was quite up-set as she had developed a deepbond with it.

We were shattered when welater came to know through aneighbour that the kitten wasno more. It had got run overaccidentally when her son tookout his car from the parking lotwithout realizing it was restingunder it. We wept that nightand it took us a long time to getover the grief as its memorieskept haunting us. We wonderedwhy this tragic end to the kit-ten? Had we not known aboutits death, we would have atleast had the consolation ofbelieving it was living well else-where. As a mark of respect tothe untold friendship and bond-age with the kitten, we havekept safe the plate in which weused to serve it milk.Jayaraman is a resident of B2,Anand Flats, 31, Motilal Street,T. Sanitation issues aplentyon Pinjala Subramaniam Street

Sir, Both the ends of Pinjala SubramanianStreet (T. Nagar) has been converted into anopen urinal by hundreds of passersby, nearbyvendors and visitors to Panagal Park.

The residents of the street face a hugehealth hazard due to the unhygienic condi-tion of the road.

Because of the stink which persists 24x7,even Corporation garbage collectors do notvisit it often to clear garbage, which adds tothe sanitation issues.

Building a public urinal or keeping mobiletoilets near Panagal Park could diffuse theproblem and dissuade members of public fromsuch uncivil acts.

To deter the public from misusing the roadand maintain sanitation, I request the au-thorities to build a fenced roadside garden. Ialso appeal to the EB officials to build a fencearound the transformer at the end of thestreet to prevent public from urinating at thespot. – S. Ganesan, Pinjala SubramaniamStreet, T. Nagar

Petty thefts on Moorthy Streeton the rise

Sir, In recent days, there has been a num-ber of petty thefts like stealing of clothes, vessels, bicycles and others such small itemsin the residences on Moorthy Street, (WestMambalam).

I appeal to the police officials to increasepatrolling on Moorthy Street to discouragethe thieves. – C. Subramaniam, MoorthyStreet, West Mambalam

NO HOLDS BARRED

V. R. Krishna Iyer, Jewel of IndiaThe Peacock Throne and the Kohinoor diamond had been vandal-

ized by Nadhir Shah and the British respectively while looting thewealth of India, but these robbers could not impoverish the thenrichest country in the world since the mental worth of India remaineduninfluenced by temporal things like power or pelf.

It was in this background that great thinkers like Chandra Gupta,Buddha, Ashoka, Swamy Vivekanandaand super intellectuals likeRabindranath Tagore and Mahatma Gandhi sprouted in the holyland of India to make it holier through their innate mental attributesattuned to the love of their brethren linking minds to each othercementing a solid relationship that ensures peace in their lives andin the community.

India woke up to its domestic brand of freedom to govern itself in1947 by which time a 37-year old jurist by name V.R.Krishna Iyer, through sheer original brilliance and innate equipment for ferretingtruth from

fiction in aid of justice pure and simple had made the oldies of theBar take notice of the young lawyer. It was also endorsed by the awe-struck judiciary who had not come across such learning and theequipment in so young a lawyer. Judges at the district level courtswould await his arrival to suit his convenience all over Malabar towhich his car used to speed for daily hearing. The waiting judges musthave felt that the day was a special one when he could appear andregale them with his take on the matter in hand which they knewwould be wholly true and acceptable. A true lawyer would be a truejudge and enable a true judge to decide truthfully.

Later Justice Iyer rose higher than most coevals because he wasfuelled by honesty attuned to justice. There should be no retirementage for such godly judges, who, were they in the American SupremeCourt, can continue until their bodies become decrepit. Honesty, integrity and humanity should have no out pass in the highest templeof justice. I hope the President of India will appoint the centenarianV.R.Krishna Iyer as the Chief Justice of India forthwith. Jai Hind!
