YKHow I became a part of Mambalam Times

By B. R. ShivajiI had quit as News Editor of Indian Express,

Chennai on a sour note and had given myself amonth’s time to find another job. Though therewere various options none could match theatmosphere and camaraderie that were thehallmark of Indian Express.

Out of the blue I received a phone call from Mr.K. S. Ramakrishnan who was then heading theResearch Institute for Newspaper Develop-ment popularly known as RIND. He had earlierbeen my boss in Indian Express as Editor of theChennai and Madurai editions of the newspa-per. He had just visited Indian Express and, learning that I hadresigned, lost no time in asking me to meet him in his office.

He told me that he had registered Mambalam Times as aweekly neighbourhood newspaper to cover T. Nagar andMambalam areas and was waiting for a suitable person toman it. He had started Anna Nagar Times two years earlierand it soon became a roaring success (He was the pioneer forfree neighbourhood newspapers in the city). He also agreedwith me that I would not be at home in any newspaper afterworking in Indian Express which I had joined in 1968 andworked my way up to the position of News Editor.

He offered me the designation of Associate Editor and saidI could start work straightaway as he had already rented abuilding for the office and a Manager was in place. This wasin May, 1995. Needless to say I accepted the offer. For achange, the nerve-wracking daily deadline would not be thereand the silver lining was no night duty.

We could not launch the edition immediately as we had tostart from scratch and a lot of ground work had to be done. Ofcourse there were several teething problems which we over-came.

I thoroughly enjoyed the work. We were like one familyhaving lunch together and sharing whatever we had broughtfrom home. Even personal and family problems were dis-cussed over meals.

My colleagues’ concern when I was hospitalized twice was

indeed very touching.Frankly, the happy atmosphere that I en-

joyed in Mambalam Times greatly surpassedthat which I had experienced in Indian Express. To cap it all we had a very generous and largehearted boss whom anybody could approach.

To begin with, we had one reporter, a green-horn who also doubled as computer operator.Soon we had several more reporters, all studentswho were part-timers and thrilled to see theirbylines (names above reports) in print.

The only black and white computer in theoffice was a two-in-one affair (Apple) consisting

of a monitor and keyboard in a single, compact cabinet. Itsprice? All of Rs. 70000! Two marketing executives and anoffice boy were also appointed. It took some months to find ourfeet which we could not have done without the solid supportof Anna Nagar Times.

Readers may wonder why we called our paper MambalamTimes and not T. Nagar Times or T. Nagar-Mambalam Times. It was because a neighbourhood paper titled MambalamTimes was already being published though the issues werereleased at irregular intervals. This publication called itcurtains some months after we appeared on the scene.

We launched our publication on June 1, 1995 without anyfanfare usually associated with any start-up. The first issuewas dated June 1-7, June 1 being a Thursday. Subsequently, the issue day was shifted to Tuesday (from November 9-15,1995) and later to Saturday (from August 2-8, 1997) whichcontinues.

Our group is the first to go bi-lingual with columns/articlesin Tamil too.

We launched Ashok Nagar-K. K. Nagar edition in July2002.

Looking back over the years, I never regret joiningMambalam Times and will ever remain grateful to Mr.Ramakrishnan for changing the course of my life. It was witha heavy heart that I left Mambalam Times in November2012, the only reason being that I wanted to call it a day.

NO HOLDS BARRED

JUDICIAL ELECTORS SUPREMEFrom bring selective, Judges of the top judiciary will become

elective under the mooted procedure by which Judges merrilyappointing their own blue-eyed friends to the High Courts and theSupreme Court have done their last piece of injustice. Now Parlia-ment is seized of the instances of machinations of the laity andothers who have sent in bad fellows to the judiciary through thesmelly path of politics and trade.

August 15, the day our national flag fluttered on the masts andminds of the then nearly 40 crore Indians, should be emblemati-cally signify all that is pure which includes PURE JUSTICE byexalted minds in all walks of life with special reference to theadministration of justice by those whose reputation for truth is notdependent on forensic athleticism.

The process of selection of those who will be empowered as a HighCourt or Supreme Court Judges to decide finally on the fate of thefellow before them seeking justice must be a prophylactic one, forthere is no further step except the last one on the scaffold and therope that swings the condemned out of life.

For choosing the best mind moulded as such there is no selectiveyard stick but the reputation of the person. It is a gamble but anecessary gamble, for life itself is one. The scrapping of the extantsystem and substituting it with the proposed system stands toreason. Gopal Subramaniam will say, “You bet!”.

Sir, The Corporation garbage bin onKripashankari Street, West Mambalam, is ina broken condition for the past six months. Two of its wheels are damaged and the binoften falls over, strewing the area with gar-bage.

Cattle, stray dogs and vermin have a fieldday rummaging through the garbage. TheCorporation workers also find it difficult toclear the garbage and often leave it uncol-lected. The surrounding area stinks and is ahealth hazard to nearby residents.

I appeal to the Corporation officials to re-place the damaged garbage bin. – Narayanan,Kripashankari Street, West Mambalam

Rain waterflooding issues in

Model HouseRoad

Sir, I am resident ofModel House Road,Nandanam, whichabuts BuckinghamCanal. During theminimal recent rains, the storm water drain-age system failed andrainwater flooded thehouses abutting thecanal. There was nofacility to drain thewater as the canal it-self was full and wa-ter remained stagnantfor more than 3-days. Multiple attempts toget the Corporation tolook into the matterhave been futile. I ap-peal to the civic au-thorities to de-silt andclean the canal andthe storm water drain, else the residents willface insurmountableproblems with the ad-vent of monsoon.—Sashi, Nandanam

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Appeal to resume re-laying of Nayakkamar StreetSir, The surface of Nayakkamar Street (West Mambalam) was

milled just before the recently held Lok Sabha elections to re-layit. Citing code of conduct of election rules, the work was stoppedabruptly. More than three months have since passed and the workhas still not been resumed. It is a busy street connecting WestMambalam with Ashok Nagar. Every time a vehicle passes by, a lotof dust is thrown into the air, causing pollution. The road is strewnwith loose gravel and surface is bumpy, posing a risk to 2-wheelerriders. I appeal to Corporation officials to resume the work immedi-ately and re-lay the road. – R. Govindarajan, Flat F2, Sindura, 4,Nayakkamar Street, West Mambalam

TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

G. RAMANATHAN - 12

With the 1950s blossoming forth on the far blue horizon, G.Ramanathan’s stars were shining brightly on the sky, elevat-ing him to higher-levels of success, fame and fortune .

After the success of ‘Manthirikumari’ in 1950 he was well -entrenched with the family of Modern Theatres, with T. R.Sundaram having a good impression about his music compos-ing talents, orchestrating skills and also acting.

In 1951 came another T. R. Sundaram backedproject‘Devaki’, produced under the banner Ganapathi Pic-tures, a sister concern of Modern Theatres.

The film had an impressive cast with V. N. Janaki, MadhuriDevi, M. N. Nambiar, N. N. Kannappa, S. Balachandar, D.Balasubramaniam, T. N. Sivathanu and A. Karunanidhi.

‘Devaki’ was written by Mu. Karunanidhi and directed by apopular filmmaker of his day, R. S. Mani. Mani, who hailed froma place near Salem began his career as a film editor and workedwith the American Tamil filmmaker and maestro EllisR.Dungan. From editing to direction was the easy next step andMani became a filmmaker with a good track record.

The film had an interesting storyline. An impoverished man(Balasubramaniam) with two daughters (Janaki and MadhuriDevi) is helped by a generous hearted person. He gets his son(Kannappa) married to the elder daughter (Janaki) when bothwere kids. Fortune favours the poor man. He amasses wealth, moves to Madras and refuses to send his daughter to herhusband’s place as their family status does not match up to his!He sends the younger daughter (Madhuri) to London for higherstudies.

Against her father’s wishes, Janaki leaves home to join herhusband, but is shocked to find him crippled with leprosy. Shelives with him and undergoes several trials and tribulations dueto poverty and harassment from an evil-minded person(Nambiar). In search of peace, the couple goes to the Himalayas(Sanjeevini Hills!). Suddenly an avalanche occursenvelopingthe husband and he gets miraculously cured! They begin lifeanew and move up the ladder. But fortune brings problems withthe husband going astray. However, all’s well that ends well, with the sister returning from London finding a solution to theproblems.

Janaki and Madhuri made an excellent impact on thefilmgoers’ minds, Janaki with her subdued performance andMadhuri with her characteristic flamboyance. Nambiar playedthe villain in characteristic style. Balasubramaniam as thenew rich, haughty father performed well. A. Karunanidhi andV. M. Ezhumalai provided comic relief. Handsome Balachandarproved a fitting onscreen companion for Madhuri Devi.

The film had a dance sequence by Lalitha-Padmini-Ragini (Itwas different with the sisters running a stall selling hot tea, buttermilk, ice cream and all. This song had lines in Telugu,English, Hindi and Tamil!). There was also a dance by KumariKamala. The song sequence featured characters such as anEnglishman, a Chinese, an African, and, of course, a Tamil.

T. M. Soundararajan made a brief appearance as a beggarsinging a song but received no credit in the titles. In‘Manthirikumari’ too he had played the role of a beggar and sangthe popular song ‘Annamitta veettiley…’, again receiving nocredit. What a beginning for such a career which bestowed onhim not only great success and fortune but also made him alegend for all time . Well, that is the way the ball bounces, in life,as they say.

The film was a reasonable success. It had good music andlyrics (Marudhakasi - Ka. Mu. Sheriff - Kannadasan) with onesong ‘Hullo… my dear…Hullo...’, a duet, (voices, Loganathanand another) picturised on Kannappa and the vamp (R.Bharathi) becoming popular. There was another duet,‘Perinbamey vaazhviley…’ (Loganathan and P. Leela) and thissong was picturised on Kannappa and Janaki.

The highlight of the film was the avalanche. Shots staged inthe Modern Theaters Studio at Salem were inter-cut with‘duplicated’ shots from the Frank Capra classic Lost Horizon(1937). (The creative filmmaker Capra shot the mind-bogglingavalanche sequences, creating snow in a warehouse in LosAngelesusing tonnes of ice and other material. The atmo-sphere was so cold that in many shots the camera froze andstopped functioning!)

Karunanidhi’s dialogue was full of characteristic punch, satire and humour. Sample line “Periyamma, kutthu vilakku;chinnamma, electric vilakku…!”

Ramanathan’s success curve was the beginning lead up-wards and he became a Tamil movie music charmer indeed!
