LETTERS TO THE EDITORMTC buses circumvent approved routes

Sir, - Though the approved route for the buses leaving T.Nagar Bus Stand and going via Venkatnarayana Road /Panagal Park is via Burkit Road, some of the drivers of busroutes 13-A, 11-A, 27-C, to mention a few, circumvent this andinstead go via Dhandapani Street to reach VenkatanarayaRoad.

So the commuters waiting at bus stops on Burkit Road areoften left in the lurch.

Further, Dhandapani Street is not wide enough to take theload of bus traffic.

It also has a couple of residential complexes and a school, thereby putting the life of students at risk.

I appeal to the MTC officials to instruct its drivers to ply onlyon approved routes. - V. S. Jayaraman, 31 Motilal Street, T.Nagar

No speed breakers on busy Dr. Nair RoadSir, Dr. Nair Road, which connects Thyagaraya Road and

Vani Mahal, is a busy road throughout the day as both light andheavy vehicles ply on this road.

In spite of this there is not even a single speed breaker orzebra crossing to curb speeding motorists or regulate traffic.

Pedestrians, especially the elderly, find it difficult to use thepavements since they are not only narrow, but are blocked ata number of spots by either sign boards which are in the middleor by ramps of houses and commercial establishments.

Students of Holy Angel School located on this road find it verydifficult to cross the road and their life is always at risk as themotorists are least concerned to stop and give way to them.

I request the concerned authorities to install speed breakersat sensitive spots to regulate traffic and rid the pavements ofencroachments for the benefit of pedestrians. - R. S.Vaidyanathan, 50, Raman Street, T. Nagar.

Portion of Dhandapani Street in bad conditionSir, Pedestrians and motorists are put to great inconve-

nience and risk due to the bad condition of a long stretch ofDhandapani Street near its junction with Mahalakshmi Streetand Motilal Street.

Chennai Corporation workers have not re-laid the excavatedroad properly after completing the storm water drain work lastyear. I request the concerned authorities to take immediatesteps to relay the damaged portion of the road.- K. Sundar, 5,Dhandapani Street, T. Nagar.

NO HOLDS BARREDBy M.A. SADANAND

MURDER MOST FOULIn the February 1989 Issue of ‘The Madras Weekly Notes (Crimi-

nal)’ I had bashed the statufication of Manu Neethi Chozen at theentrance court yard of our High Court thus:

Bovine F.I.R ”M. N. Chozhan, King, Judge, Prosecutor and Executioner too, Dispensed justice, human and bovine, on a mere moo By a cow which pleaded in lingo feral for stuffing its calf a-la the

Chennai cattle,Which, translated wrongly, became a murder F.I.R.Away he rode in the killer chariot, his mind afire to run over and

crush to death his son, a minor,Without trial or rigmarole like audi alteram partem, to avenge the

calf, in a savage retributive Barter, or to display his divine power of death, I wonder!”While Macaulay calls such a homicide ‘Murder’, Maneka’s due

process in Article 21 orders Manu to Madame Tussaud’s chamber ofhorrors, while the High Court in feigned awe pillored Manu for birdsto foul upon in its silver plus centenary.

If killing is murder, all wars are festivals of murder, but ourhistorical heroes in tales of valour and the Hitlerian and Trumanianlore of World War II, and even the Fonseca treatment of a 12 -yearold orphan, deserve statues, at least within the precincts of Zoos.

Let the deadly duo of the Home Minister and the President look upthe meaning of Mercy which, according to friend Shakespeare, blesseth the one who shows it and the one who receives it. Neethi isnot anger, but love. If former Justice V. R. Krishna Iyer had greenflaggedme to the Supreme Court to sit with him, our neethi would have savedthe lives of many.

That is why I named my daughter Neethi, the best achievementin my life. To expiate the sin of the original Manu, she named her sonManu to show the world how good a chap can be!

I appeal to all those who have been pitchforked to positions that cansave people, to be Merciful. Let the killers languish in prisons untiltheir natural exit.
