Parthasarathy of the DMDK was elected to the Assembly from the newly formed constituency of DMDK candidate triumphs in Virugambakkam AIADMK candidate V. P. Kalairajan was re-elected to the Assembly from T. Nagar constituency defeating his main rival Dr. A. Chellakumar of the Congress by more than 32,000 votes. The constituency includes Ashok Nagar and parts of K. K. Nagar. While Kalairajan polled 75,883 votes, Chellakumar got 43,421 votes, according to the result announced by the Elec- tion Commission on May 13 evening. While K. Ravichandran (BJP) got 4,575 votes, ‘Traffic’ K. R. Ramaswamy, who con- tested as an independent, got 1,305 votes. All the other can- didates got less than 1000 votes each, the lowest figure being 62. There were 19 candi- Kalairajan re-elected from T. Nagar Virugambakkam defeating his nearest DMK rival K. AIADMK candidate V. P.Kalairajan was re-elected tothe Assembly from T. Nagarconstituency defeating hismain rival Dr. A. Chellakumarof the Congress by more than32,000 votes. The constituencyincludes Ashok Nagar andparts of K. K. Nagar.

While Kalairajan polled75,883 votes, Chellakumar got43,421 votes, according to theresult announced by the Elec-tion Commission on May 13evening.

While K. Ravichandran(BJP) got 4,575 votes, ‘Traffic’K. R. Ramaswamy, who con-tested as an independent, got1,305 votes. All the other can-didates got less than 1000votes each, the lowest figurebeing 62. There were 19 candi-

Elderly sisters found murdered

her sister Kamakshi (72)(residents of 39, K. R. KoilStreet, West Mambala-m) were found strangledin their rented house onMay 11.

The bodies were discov-ered by their domestic helpKannia-mmal. The almirahand cupboards were found ran-sacked. The jewels the womenhad been wearing were alsomissing.

The sisters used to live onDhanapal Street and movedto the rented flat on K. R. KoilStreet two years ago.

The women did not respondto the calls of the person deliv-ering milk who left without leav-ing the milk.

According to police, Kannia-mmal came to work aroundnoon and found the front doorbolted from outside. She en-tered and found Jayalakshmilying on the floor in the hall.

When she went to the kitchenshe found Kamakshi lying in apool of blood on the floor. Shealerted the neighbours whocalled the police. The maid hadbeen engaged a month ago.

Kamakshi, who had obtainedan M. Sc. degree from CalcuttaUniversity, had worked as achemist in King’s Institute ofPreventive Medicine, Guindyand sought voluntary retire-ment in 1994. She had earlierobtained a science degree fromQueen Mary’s College, Chen-nai.

Jayalakshmi had been mar-ried to Venkataraman but theyhad divorced.

According to police, neigh-

bours claimed to have seen thewomen wearing a lot of jewel-lery on a few occasions. Thejewellery was missing. 5 spe-cial teams have been formed toinvestigate the case. Finger-prints were lifted from thehouse. A sniffer dog ran somedistance and gave up the scent.

Police are examining the reco-rds of phone calls made/re-ceived by the victims throughthe landline.

They did not appear to havemobile phones. Police collecteda number of mobile and landlinenumbers from a personal di-ary. Police suspect that themurders might have takenplace between 5 p.m and 8 p.mon May 10 as they found doughkneaded to make chapathis inthe kitchen. According to po-lice, the women were known toopen the door only after mak-ing sure who the visitor was.They suspect that someoneknown to the women mighthave murdered them.
