FINE ARTS

ADULT FINE ART AND WATERCOLORAges 18+Students explore a variety of drawing and painting techniques with an emphasis on applying certain techniques to various subject matter. Individual help is given along with demonstrations and special watercolor tricks.

DRAWING AND FINE ARTSAges 9 - 12This class combines drawing and painting lessons to teach students valuable art techniques such as perspective and basic color theory. Students also learn about a different artist and style from art history.

TEEN PHOTOSHOPAges 13 - 18Students learn the basics of Photoshop, a professional tool for photo editing and graphic design, and digital photography. $60 / Members $80 / Guests

ADULT PHOTOSHOPAges 19+Students learn the basics of Photoshop incorporating digital photography, photo editing, and scrapbooking tools.$60 / Members $80 / Guests

PUPPETEER PREPAges 9 - 12Learn the beginning steps to becoming a puppeteer! Create your own custom full-size hand puppet, develop your puppet’s personality and write a script for your own puppet show. Students will also learn basic techniques of becoming a ventriloquist!

MY SHAPES MAKE ART Ages 5 - 8Learn the basic essentials of art by using well-known shapes to create each piece with painting, drawing, and mixed media techniques. Each session has a different theme.

TODDLER ART TALES Ages 3 - 5Bring little ones to our cozy library and enjoy stories, rhymes, and puppetry followed by a fun art project related to the day’s theme!$30 / Members $40 / Guests

LITERACY AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE FOR KIDS AND ADULTSLearn vocabulary words, finger spelling, common everyday words, and conversational skills. Discover the importance of facial/body language and be exposed to aspects of deaf culture.

PICTURE ME READING!A six-week program for beginning and struggling readers that teaches the critical sight words necessary for reading success. Dr. Marlys Isaacson’s unique “Picture Me Reading!” method rapidly increases word recognition, fluency and self-confidence. Permission to enroll based on reading assessment. Please call (619)269-1540 to make an appointment. ONGOING KID ANGEL LEARNING LAB30 hour afterschool program, offered twice a week. Five students are needed for class to begin. Compass Learning Odyssey software offers students individually–designed student assessments, learning plans, goal-setting and accountability, as well as engaging interactive activities with a credentialed teacher. UNEMPLOYMENT SUPPORTCome meet weekly with others that not only share your situation but care about turning things around. Meet with individuals and share resources, experiences, and overall knowledge about job searching, interviewing, and staying positive! This is an ongoing, weekly group.

WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENTThe Family Resource Center is offering a weekly empowerment group for women who reside within the Kroc Center’s surrounding community. Involves group participation, networking, emotional support, and group participation in activities on campus. This is an ongoing, weekly group.

NUTRITION EDUCATIONThis class is designed to promote healthy eating and food preparation for parents and guardians with children 5 and under. Free child care is provided for participants and incentives are provided for course completion. This course is offered as five, weekly one-hour sessions.

LIFE OPTIONS AGES 55+ Life Options provides an opportunity for individuals age 55 and over to remain positively engaged in their communities while exploring educational, social and volunteer experiences. ARTS & CRAFTS CLASS Enjoy sewing, crafting, jewelry making, knitting, crocheting, scrap booking and more. Bring your own projects to work on or purchase materials to make the projects demonstrated in class. Learn how and why crafting can help to keep your brain fit and your mind sharp.

INTERGENERATIONAL PROJECTS Seniors participate with youth from kindergarten through high school ages. Share life experiences, participate in storytelling, art classes and help in our organic garden. Call 619.269.1424 or email [email protected] for information.

LIFE OPTIONS MEETINGS Seniors share life experiences and ideas, as well as learn about opportunities for volunteer service and personal development. Community resources are also available. Meeting topics may include book discussion, local trips, guest speakers or entertainment. Refreshments served.

ONGOING KINSHIP SUPPORT GROUP For those raising grandchildren, nieces, nephews or other relatives, this group offers specialized training classes, resources and referrals. Classes are in English every Thursday. Call Rose House at 619.447.5004 for service and meeting information.

REDISCOVER SAN DIEGO Weekly field trips to explore cultural, historical, and recreational opportunities in San Diego County. Introduction meetings are on September 6, 2011 and January 3, 2012.

SCENE STUDY CLASS A senior theater class taught by a professional through San Diego Community College Continuing Education. Students are given scripts, pair up, and do rehearsal homework. For beginning and intermediate level actors.

WRITING YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY Create an autobiography with “YOU! History in the Making.” Rita Ryan Micklish, San Diego author and SDSU instructor offers a six-session small group experience. Pre-registration is necessary: call 619.269.1422 or e-mail [email protected].

BRAIN FITNESS The Brain Fitness Program Is a workout for the brain featuring six computer- based exercises. The exercises target roots of cognitive function that improve processing speed, working and narrative memory and sound discrimination, precision and sequencing. COMPUTER BASICS Learn the basics of computer hardware and software. A basic class to acquaint you with skills that are used in most computer programs. Class begins September 12, 2011.

EDUCATION

Arts and literacy come together for a fun and engaging series of evenings. Each night features a themed presentation by one of San Diego’s premiere cultural institutions and an interactive art project from Young Audiences. Each family takes home a new book related to the evening’s theme! Takes place in the Education Center Multipurpose Room unless otherwise noted.

DANCE

Students will be invited to participate in our winter dance recital to be held in our beautiful Joan B. Kroc Worship Theatre.

BALLETBallet shoes and leotards are required for Ballet II and above. For recital purposes, please purchase pink ballet shoes for girls and black ballet shoes for boys.

BALLET I Students explore basic ballet steps while also learning rhythm and coordination.

BALLET II Continue learning basic ballet steps and terminology while improving poise, rhythm, stretching andcoordination through more advanced ballet combinations. *Previous experience or instructor approval required.

BALLET III A more advanced version of Ballet II, studentscontinue learning ballet combinations, rhythm, stretching and coordination. *Previous experience or instructor approval required.

BALLET IV Royal Academy of dance methods applied at the Intermediate Foundation level. Dancers will learn French terminology, minimal ballet history, and should begin to have an awareness of space and direction. Students will practice ballet positions with artistry as well as the pattern of barre work, center work, slow work and fast work. *Previous experience or instructor approval required.

TEEN BALLETLearn the fundamentals of ballet practice and develop skills in barre, center and traveling movements while learning basic vocabulary and body awareness.

ADULT BALLETFor students of all experience levels, adult ballet will build on basic ballet fundamentals and work to develop skills within individual capability.

BROADWAY BABIESAges 4 - 8 Have fun learning techniques to improve natural acting ability. This is a great introduction into the world of singing, dancing and acting for stage; and a wonderful place to learn self-expression!

ADULT CONTEMPORARY/MODERN DANCE Ages 18+A rich, diverse, and unique movement form that supports individual expression while developing a solid technical base.

DANCE MOVEMENT Ages 3 - 6 Children explore motor and coordination skills while learning basic dance technique.

HIP HOP Ages 8 - 13 Students will be taken on a wonderful journey with all the latest Hip Hop moves.

TEEN HIP HOPAges 13-18Learn the basics of freestyle and other choreography while incorporating stretching and conditioning into a constantly upbeat and energetic hip hop style.

JAZZ IAges 6 - 10Dancers will learn jazz terminology as well as rhythmic accents, turns, jumps, and choreography. Practice the pattern of center warm up, core strengthening, center stretching, across the floor turns, and jumps.

All Home School Dance Classes are scheduled in the morning and afternoon to accommodate home school schedules. Age range flexible upon instructor approval.

HS BROADWAY DANCEAges 6 - 10And a 5, 6, 7, 8! Join a professionally trained dancer in the art of Broadway Dance. Mix time-steps, acrobatics, ballet fundamentals and plenty of jazz hands in new creative works to classical and modern Broadway tunes.

Wacky, irreverent and as entertaining as it’s predecessor from 1879, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE JR. spins a hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim-witted young lovers, dewy-eyed daughters and an eccentric Major-General, all morally bound to the often-ridiculous dictates of honor and duty.

EXPLORING PERCUSSIONAges 7 - 12This class includes multiple aspects of percussion, drum set and hand drumming. Basic to advanced rhythms will be covered, including rudiments, reading, and percussion essentials.

TEEN VOICE TECHNIQUEAges 13 - 19Singing in groups and solos, the class will focus on techniques to see teens through the transition years and changing voice ranges. Safely support and free natural voices for enjoyment as the adult voice grows and matures.

ADULT VOICE TECHNIQUEAges 20 and overWhether you sing in church choir, Karaoke or just in the shower, this class is for everyone! Providing proper vocal technique in a fun, relaxed group, you will learn to free your natural, most beautiful voiceand sing the songs you’ve always wanted to sing!

All classes are eight weeks in length, unless otherwise noted. No classes will be held on holidays; fees will be prorated accordingly. Classes are subject to cancellation or change due to low enrollment. Art supplies are Included in the cost of each class. Classes are limited to 20 students, unless otherwise noted. All music students enrolled in a class will have priority in registering for the next session, until two weeks before the new session begins.
