Fee Assistance and Scholarships The Salvation Army believes that everyone should have the opportunity to participate in Kroc Center programming. Cancellation and Refund Policy

A full refund will be issued when The Salvation Army cancels a class due to low enrollment. Refunds will not otherwise be issued.

Girls in middle and high school are given the opportunity to join Girl Guards, a four-fold emphasis addressing their spiritual, physical, mental and social needs. Skill-development, personal growth and community service opportunities expand as girls learn to work together and independently in various environments.

We offer The Salvation Army Adventure Corps program for boys age six-14. Adventure Corps participants are encouraged to get out, explore the world around them and discover ways of serving God and others.

Spiritual Development Programs Girlfriends Unlimited Ladies, take a break! Join us for a time to have some girl fun! Girlfriends Unlimited is a spiritually-based program that develops our relationships with God and with each other. Opportunities to pursue specific interests are provided, including activities such as scrapbooking, quilting, salsa dancing, or just some good-old self-pampering!

Crazy Love Bible Study Join us as we read and discuss “Crazy Love” by Francis Chan. A brief intro follows: Have you ever wondered if we are missing it? It's crazy if you think about it. The God of the universe-- the creator of nitrogen and pine needles, galaxies and E-minor-- loves us with a radical, unconditional self-sacrificing love. And what is our typical response? We go to church, sing songs, and try not to cuss. Whether you've verbalized it yet or not, we all know something's wrong. Because when you are wildly in love with someone, it changes everything.

Faith Café Find community and authenticity, service and spiritual formation at Faith Café...

Every Saturday night we convert our

chapel into a full-service coffee house! We create a laid-back environment where we will explore what the Bible says about the issues we face every day. Faith Café features comfortable seating, musical guests, wonderful fellowship, and delightful coffee brews. While Faith Café is only for those 18 and up, on-site childcare is available.

Community Needs Program Areas

Preview Programs The Salvation Army is currently developing a comprehensive community center, known as the Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center (Kroc Center), at 2500 South Division Avenue in Grand Rapids, MI. This 96,000 square foot facility will incorporate amenities such as a performing arts center, a gymnasium, an aquatic center, a fitness center, a worship center, and much more. More importantly, the Kroc Center will provide a place for area residents to come

together and discover their potential.

While the future center will provide incredible benefits to the community in the near future, its grand opening is still over a year away. In the interim, The Salvation Army will utilize several community facilities to offer transitional programs until the Kroc Center is opened.

We still need your help to unlock the doors of the Grand Rapids Kroc Center! An additional $2.5 million must still be raised to ensure that our

community can reap the full benefits of this facility! Please contact us to find out how you can help us to “Unlock the Kroc” and open the doors of opportunity for thousands of community members!

The Salvation Army recently conducted a Needs Assessment Study in the Grand Rapids community. Through this process, community leaders, educators, and parents identified six specific categories of community concerns and needs:

• Childhood Obesity

• Lack of Organized Positive Activities for Children and Youth • Social Skills Development

• Low Academic Achievement

• Poor Physical and Mental Health

• Inability to Communicate Due to Language Barriers

Transitional Kroc Center programming will be designed to meet the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs of children and adults, from newborns to seniors.

All programs will fall under one or more of the following areas:

• Education

• Fine Arts

• Health and Wellness

• Recreation

• Spiritual Development

Prizes! Games!

The Salvation Army of Western Michigan and Northern Indiana has received a $1 million challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan. The challenge grant will support the campaign to build and fund The Salvation Army’s new Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, a 20-acre, multi-use, recreation and spiritual center located at 2500 South Division Avenue on Grand Rapids’ south side.

To meet the Kresge challenge, The Salvation Army of Grand Rapids has launched “Unlock the Kroc”, a community fundraising campaign with a goal of raising its final $2.5 million by March 31, 2010. The Kresge grant and the “Unlock the Kroc” campaign is the final step that will help The Salvation Army reach its $15 million campaign goal. The achievement of this goal is one of the leading criteria for securing the original grant from Joan Kroc, widow of McDon-ald’s co-founder Ray Kroc, which will go directly to construction and endowment.

Tumbling/Floor Gymnastics This fun and exciting program is designed to enhance self-confidence and improve coordination, physical fitness, and flexibility. Kroc Family Fun Nights Come join us on the third Friday of every month to celebrate the joy of family! Kroc Family Nights are free of charge and include games, movies, arts and crafts projects, praise and worship, food and refreshments, and various other activities depending upon the theme of each individual family night. Family Nights are held at the Dickinson Park Community Center and are open to anyone who would like to attend! So load up the whole family and come on down to The Salvation Army for wholesome family fun from the good old days! ***Please contact us early in the month of each family night to find out what the specific themes and activities will be for that month***

Swing Dance Class Whether you have two left feet and no dance experience, or if Lindy Hop (swing dancing) is something you would like to add to your repertoire, this is the class for you! As the original swing dance, Lindy Hop has it all, from exciting and flashy to smooth and cool. Come join us for this fun and versatile dance and we’ll get you dancing the basic steps before you know it! You don’t need any experience or a dance partner to attend this class. Health/Wellness Programs Family Fitness Class Come get fit as a family! This class, taught by an AAFA-certified instructor, features fun and engaging aerobic activities that help raise the heart rates of you and your loved ones so that you can all be happy and healthy! If you are a household of 2 or 10, we want to encourage you to come out and get in shape together! This class is appropriate for individuals of all fitness levels and abilities. Did You Know?

◊ The Salvation Army began in 1865 when William Booth, a London minister, gave up the comfort of his pulpit and decided to take his message into the streets where it would reach the poor, the homeless, the hungry and the destitute.

◊ In May of 1878, Booth summoned his son, Bramwell, and his good friend George Railton to read a proof of the Christian Mission's annual report. At the top it read:

THE CHRISTIAN MISSION is A VOLUNTEER ARMY. Bramwell strongly objected to this wording. He was not a volunteer: he was compelled to do God's work. So, in a flash of inspiration, Booth crossed out "Volunteer" and wrote "Salvation". The Salvation Army was born.

◊ In 1879, 17 year old Lieutenant Eliza Shirley, migrated from England to join her parents in Philadelphia. She began evangelistic meetings, and wrote to General Booth begging to start the work in America.

◊ In 1880 Commissioner George Railton and 7 lassies

landed in Battery Park, New York and marched off of the ship with a flag and drum and claimed the United States for God and The Salvation Army.

◊ The Salvation Army is a Church with a quasi-military structure. Members of the Corps (church) are called soldiers and the ministers are called officers. The officers are assigned a rank just like the military.

◊ In 1899 in Australia, the son of the founder of The Salvation Army, Herbert Booth used film to propagate the faith and

minister to people through storytelling. The Salvation Army may well be the earliest on record to use film for religious purposes.

◊ There are 14,918 Salvation Army Centers worldwide.

◊ The Salvation Army started in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1883.

◊ The first official Salvation Army brass band in the United States was formed in Grand Rapids, MI.

Youth Self Defense and Safety Awareness This fun course is designed for self-defense purposes emphasizing child safety awareness. Self-discipline rather than aggressiveness is promoted. Children are taught how to avoid dangerous situations. Students are placed into classes according to age and ability. Participants will earn certificates, ribbons, and medals! This program is designed specifically for children ages 5 - 15, and is taught by a black belt instructor. Instructor: Latravis Q. Hart, AIM USA

Fine Arts Programs Toot Your Own Horn - Level 1 Do you have a desire to learn to play a brass instrument but have never had the opportunity or time? Now is your chance to turn those dreams into a reality! This is a class for beginners, adults or kids. Group instruction will be provided in a small-class setting where the basics of music theory and technique are taught. Students will start off with recorders and progress to brass instruments in Level 2. Instructor: Denise Robinson

Kroc Leadership Academy An after-school program designed for elementary and junior-high school students, the Kroc Leadership Academy offers a safe and supportive environment for students attending several local area schools to participate in a variety of educational and recreational activities that promote leadership and achievement. The Kroc Leadership Academy combines a focus on the entire family with high expectations to help participants to meet measurable outcome-based goals and objectives focused on student achievement. These goals are aligned to measure student and family development in the areas of academic success, positive social skills, positive self-esteem, health awareness, family teamwork, and volunteerism. Currently this program is operating at a limited number of schools. Please contact us to see if your child is eligible to participate or to let us know that you would like to see this program brought in to your child’s school.
