TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHERS: RHP Kris Medlen (1-3, 6.85) vs. RHP Masahiro Tanaka (1-0, 2.29) BOMBERS BACK IN BRONX--The struggles for the Royals continued with their fourth loss in the last five games, a series-opening 6-3 decision here last night...the long ball was the determining factor in a game that featured seven solo homers, five of which were hit by the homestanding Yankees in the first three innings...Chris Young tied a club record by surrendering the five roundtrippers in 2.2 innings to fall to 1-5 on the season...the Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first on Brian McCann’s home run, but the Royals knotted it quickly when Alex Gordon homered to dead-center in the second...from that point forward it was all Yankees with Carlos Beltran (2), Brett Gardner and Aaron Hicks taking turns with the home run ball...one bright spot was Dillon Gee’s relief performance, working 5.1 innings allowing just a run on three hits...the Royals are now 1-3 on this trip that began with a 1-2 stop in Cleveland, with three to play here. UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY--Kansas City’s current 3-10 slide has taken the club a game below .500 for the first time since July 22, 2014, when the Royals were 49-50...the 2014 club rectified that situation by reeling off five consecutive wins and 23 out of 29 to climb back into the race and eventually land a spot in the A.L. Wild Card game, and we all know how that turned out...the biggest issue has been KC’s play on the road, going 6-11 to this point, but just 2-10 in the last dozen away games...entering 2016, Kansas City was the best road team in the Majors from 2013-15, posting a 133-110 ledger, two more wins than the N.L. best Los Angeles Dodgers (131-112). HAPPY BIRTHDAY MVP--The Most Valuable Player of the 2015 World Series, Salvador Perez, is celebrating his 26th birthday today...he shares his date of birth with such luminaries as ESPN’s Chris Berman (61), U2 frontman Bono (56), SNL’s Kenan Thompson (38) and fellow baseball player and former Royal, George Kottaras (33). LONG BALL RECORD TIED--Chris Young’s abbreviated evening here on Monday was hastened by a club record tying five home runs allowed, matching the handful of roundtrippers surrendered by Sean O’Sullivan on May 28, 2011 at Texas...the last five-homer allowance in the Majors prior to last night was Philadelphia’s Dustin McGowan last June 16 in Baltimore...the third inning marked the first time a KC hurler allowed three homers in the same frame since Jeremy Guthrie last July 29 in the sixth inning at Cleveland...that was the second time it occurred to Guthrie last year, also giving up a three-pack of blasts in the first inning of his May 25 start here vs. the Yankees. WIZARD OF HOZ--Eric Hosmer continued his terrific start to the season with a towering home run to right in the eighth inning, his second roundtripper in as many games, fifth in his last 14 games and sixth of the year...the blast extended is current hitting streak to eight games, in which he’s hit .370 (10-for-27) with a double, three homers and eight RBI, slugging at a .741 clip while accruing an OPS of 1.192...he had a big league high 18-game streak halted on April 30 in Seattle and had it not been for a shifted Kyle Seager’s leaping grab of a looping line drive in the ninth inning, Hoz could be in the midst of a 26-game hitting streak...dating back to when the 18-gamer started on April 10, he has batted .353 (36-for-102) with 16 runs scored, six doubles, a triple, six home runs and 15 RBI, with an OPS of 1.002. HOMESTAND STARTS FRIDAY--The Royals will return to Kauffman Stadium on Friday night for a six-game stand featuring an Interleague visit from the Atlanta Braves followed by a three-game set against Boston that begins next Monday...since the start of 2014, Kansas City has compiled the best Interleague record in the Majors at 30-15, four wins better than runner-up Detroit in that span at 26-20...KC is 2-3 to this point vs. the N.L. in 2016, splitting a pair with the Mets to open the season and then going 1-2 last week against the Nationals. Royals vs. Yankees Last night was a continuation of the issues that confronted the Royals when they visited Yankee Stadium last year...KC has now lost its last four games here, while being outscored by a 29-7 margin, while getting outhomered 13-4...Kansas City is 191-281 all-time vs. the Yanks, 81-156 here in the Bronx, 9-15 in new Yankee Stadium. BUGGED BY NATS--Kris suffered a 13-2 loss to the Nationals last Wednesday, allowing a career-high nine runs (six earned) in 2.0-plus innings, matching the shortest start of his career…the first six batters of the game reached (all scored), before recording the first out on his 38th pitch, though the inning was exacerbated by three errors, two on ground balls by the first two hitters of the game…he had a 1-2-3 second inning, but allowed the first three batters to reach in the third (single, single, walk), before ceding the inning to Danny Duffy, who allowed all three inherited runners to score…it was his third straight defeat, including losses to Stephen Strasburg and Felix Hernandez in his last two starts…he has never lost four straight decisions. STILL AMONG THE BEST--Despite three straight losses, Medlen still ranks among the best in the game since the 2012 All-Star break, posting the 10th-best ERA (2.92) among pitchers that have worked at least 350.0 innings...his .646 winning percentage (31-17) in that span ranks 10th among pitchers with at least 40 decisions. This & ThatRoyals Notes - Kansas City Royals @ New York Yankees - Tuesday, May 10, 2016

GEE SOLID BACK IN THE APPLE--A New York Met for the first six years of his big league career, Dillon Gee returned to the Big Apple last night and delivered a solid performance in a different borough...Gee bailed out the bullpen with 5.1 innings of three-hit, one-run work, the first time a relief pitcher gave up just a run in at least 5.1 frames in Yankee Stadium since Baltimore’s Mike Oquist on May 21, 1994...it was Gee’s third career appearance here in the Bronx, where he’s gone 1-1 with a 2.29 ERA, while limiting the Yankees to a .176 batting average.

LO AND ALEX HEATING UP--A pair of slow starters at the plate have begun to turn it up a notch with Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon each beginning to turn their year around...Cain, who was hitting .200 after play on April 25, has batted .340 (16-for-47) in his last 11 games, featuring six multi-hit games, upping his season average 56 points to .256 entering tonight...Gordon, who barrelled an Ivan Nova pitch over the fence in center last night, has a six-game hitting streak alive in which he has batted .350 and upped his season mark 28 points to .233.

STARTERS IN A RUT--Dating back to an 8-3 loss to Baltimore on April 23, Kansas City’s starting hurlers have hit a speed bump, posting a 6.84 ERA in a 15-game stretch, with the rotation going 3-11...in the 11 defeats, the starters have combined to allow 52 earned runs in 50.0 innings for a 9.36 ERA and the opposition hitting .318...conversely, in the three wins the starters have allowed just two earned runs in 19.0 innings for a 0.95 mark, with the victories going to Ian Kennedy (2) and Yordano Ventura (1).

HERRERA & DAVIS ZEROED IN--The back end of the bullpen duo of Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis continue to keep the opposition off the board, with Herrera adding another scoreless frame in Saturday’s shutout victory at Cleveland...Herrera has now worked 15 scoreless outings to open the campaign (14.1 innings), the fifth Royals’ pitcher to start the season with as many scoreless appearances in relief, joining Davis (22 straight to start ‘15), Louis Coleman (18 in ‘13), Joakim Soria (17 in ‘08) and Hipolito Pichardo (15 in ‘97)...Davis has made 11 scoreless appearances to open this year, totaling 10.2 innings with three hits allowed and 11 strikeouts...combined, the duo has worked 26 times totaling 25.0 scoreless innings allowing just 14 hits and seven walks with 30 strikeouts, holding the opposition to a .163 average (14-for-86).

SALVY CONTROLLING THE RUNNING GAME--Three-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner, Salvador Perez has nabbed a Major League best 10 potential base thieves, one more than Milwaukee’s Jonathan Lucroy, who is currently second...in the last two-plus seasons going back to 2014, Perez has the most runners caught stealing with 57...Salvy is also #1 among all receivers in pickoffs since coming to the Majors with 17.

DAVIS AMONG CLOSER ELITE--Closer Wade Davis has had only one save situation in Kansas City’s last 15 games, securing a Kansas City win in Seattle on May 1...it was his eighth in as many tries this year, which despite the recent stretch of rescue inactivity still ranks just two saves behind the American League leaders...Davis, who became the full-time closer after Greg Holland went down with an elbow injury in the second half of 2015, has made good on 25 of his last 26 regular season save situations for a 96.2% success which tops the Majors in that span, just ahead of the Dodgers’ Kenley Jansen (95.8%)... Davis was also 4-for-4 in last October’s run to the title, tossing 10.2 scoreless innings over the three series.

STRETCH VS. THE EAST--Last night kicked off a 10-game stretch against a combination of Eastern Division teams, with this series running through Thursday, before hosting the N.L. East’s Braves this weekend and then returning to work against the A.L. East when Boston hits town next week...KC is now 2-2 vs. the East with last night’s loss combined to a 2-1 series at home vs. Balltimore in its only other work to this point against the East this year...the Royals were 18-16 vs. the East last year...after the series with the Red Sox concludes on May 18, Kansas City will play 14 of 17 games within the Central Division from May 19-June 5.

HOME FIELD ADVANTAGE--The Royals are 9-5 in Kauffman Stadium in 2016...dating back to last October, Kansas City has won 16 of its last 21 games contested in “The K”...the Royals are coming off a 51-30 home mark last season, the third best home win total in the American League...last year’s total matched the 1975 Royals for fifth most at home in team history...dating back to the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City is tied with Cleveland and the Angels for the third most home wins in the American League with 146, trailing only the Orioles (156) and Blue Jays (148).

RECORD SETTING SKIPPER--The winningest manager in franchise history, Ned Yost is in his sixth full season with the club, taking the reins on May 13, 2010...he is currently two games below .500 for the Kansas City portion of his managerial career at 483-485, easily outdistancing Whitey Herzog’s previous team mark of 410 wins (1975-79)...his postseason managerial mark of 22-9 is good for a .710 winning pct., which ranks eighth all-time and is atop the list of managers with at least 20 postseason tilts under their belt...Yost is the 16th full-time manager in franchise history and is sixth among active managers is games (1,927) and sixth in wins (940)...his 1,927 games skippered rank 61st all-time, surpassing Bill Virdon...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002).

THE DEFENDING CHAMPS--Kansas City opened 2016 as the two-time defending American League Champions, a franchise first, defeating the Mets to win the World Series crown last year after going to a Game #7 in the 2014 Fall Classic before succumbing to the San Francisco Giants...Kansas City’s A.L. title in 2015 was the fourth in franchise history, joining the 1980, ‘85 and 2014...the Royals are coming off a 95-67 regular season and their first American League Central championship, winning the division by 12 games...the last division title won by Kansas City was the 1985 A.L. West, when the club parlayed that triumph into its first World Series title...the 95 wins last year were the most by a KC squad since the 1980 Royals went 97-65...dating back to the start of the 2013 season, Kansas City has a 285-231 record for a .554 winning pct., the best mark in the American League, fourth best in the Majors (behind St. Louis, Pittsburgh and L.A.)...KC has seven more total wins in that span than the second best A.L. club Baltimore (280).

THE COMEBACK KIDS--In winning 11 games during the 2015 postseason, the Royals had to come from behind in eight of those victories, including an unprecedented seven comebacks from a multiple-run deficit...KC rallied from a one-run deficit in Game #2 of the World Series against the Mets, while coming back from two runs behind on three other occasions during the Fall Classic, capped by the two-run rally in the top of the ninth inning of the deciding Game #5, sending the game to extra innings with the Royals plating five runs in the 12th to seal the title...Kansas City also rallied from a two-run deficit in the deciding game of the ALDS vs. the Astros to advance to the League Championship Series vs. Toronto...the Royals came from three runs back in Game #2 of both the ALDS vs. Houston and the ALCS vs. the Blue Jays...the biggest comeback of the fall matched the same scenario of the 2014 Wild Card game vs. the A’s, as KC was down by four runs to Houston with six outs to go in game #4 at Minute Maid Park, but plated five in the top of the eighth and two more in the ninth to get to a deciding Game #5 in Kauffman Stadium.
