THE 2014 KANSAS CITY ROYALS POST-SEASON GUIDE IS AVAILABLE ON-LINE AT MLBPRESSBOX.COM LATE RUNS PROVIDE A KC FIRST--The Royals return to Kauffman Stadium with their first-ever 2-0 lead in an American League Championship Series, posting a 6-4 win in Baltimore on Saturday...KC plated a pair in the ninth to avoid extra innings for just the second time in the six postseason games played to date, with Alcides Escobar breaking the 4-4 tie with a double, followed by a Lorenzo Cain single...Cain finished Saturday with the third 4-hit game in Kansas City postseason history, with the other two belonging to none other than Hall of Famer George Brett...Wade Davis picked up his second-straight win, while Greg Holland notched his second save of the series and fourth of the postseason...the Royals won their sixth-straight game of this postseason (ninth overall), with five of those wins coming in KC’s last at-bat. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER--Since the eighth inning of the Wild Card Game here against Oakland two weeks ago tonight, the Royals have scored 15 runs from the eighth inning on, winning four games in extra innings and scoring a pair in the ninth on Saturday for the win in Baltimore...the only contest that KC hasn’t plated a run in the eighth or beyond was the 8-3 ALDS clincher here against the Angels...Kansas City is the first team in Major League Baseball to win four extra-inning games in one postseason. POSTSEASON WINNING STREAK--It’s been 29 years in the making, but the Royals now have a 9-game postseason winning streak, including a 6-0 mark this year...the last time Kansas City trailed at the end of an inning was after the eighth frame of the Wild Card game here vs. Oakland, when the A’s held a 7-6 advantage...since KC rallied to tie the game in the ninth and then ultimately win it in the 12th, the Royals have not trailed for 45 consecutive innings...Kansas City won its last three games of the 1985 World Series and then open its return to postseason play on September 30 this season with the win over the A’s in the Wild Card Game, and then took all three games of the ALDS over the Angels, two in extra innings, before winning twice in Baltimore...the 9-game streak is tied for sixth on the all-time list with the 2007-08 Red Sox...the Royals are the first club to win their first six games of a postseason since Colorado reeled off seven in a row to open the 2007 playoffs which propelled them to their only World Series appearance. GET COMFORTABLE--Apparently winning takes time, as the Royals have played 8 hours and 54 minutes of baseball in the first two games of this series against the Orioles, averaging 4:27 per contest...in the six postseason games to this point, Kansas City has averaged 4:12 per game, with the “fastest” affair a 3:38 minute win in the ALDS clincher against the Angels, the only contest that didn’t have a bottom of the ninth, while the 12-inning Wild Card win over Oakland took 4:45 to complete. FOUR RUNS STILL THE KEY--The Royals have put up some phenomenal numbers when the offense has been able to get at least four runs across the plate in a game over the last two seasons, and this postseason has been no different...Kansas City is 6-0 to this point and has scored at least four times in five of the six games, the only one without scoring four was the 3-2, 11-inning win in Anaheim in Game #1 of the ALDS...during the regular season, KC was 69-14 when scoring at least four runs and combined with last year (64-14), the Royals are 105 games over .500 during the regular season when scoring at least four runs (133-28). ROAD WARRIORS--The 4-0 road mark this postseason is consistent with the regular season as the Royals saved their best work for the road this year going 47-34 away from ‘The K’, five wins better than Kansas City totaled at home this year (42-39)...the road year turned around in Chicago, as KC entered play on July 22 in Chicago with a 26-25 record away from ‘The K’, but then reeled off a 21-9 record in road tilts, matching the Angels for the most road wins since that date...Kansas City was 8-1-1 in its last 10 road series played...the 47 road wins were the third most in franchise history and one win behind the ‘77 club for second highest success rate away from home. Royals vs. Orioles Kansas City returns to “The K” after a 2-0 stop in Baltimore, running the season mark to 4-1 in Camden Yards in 2014...the Royals and O’s split the 4-game series they played here in mid- May...the regular season and now postseason results: Date Site Score WP LP Att. 4/25 @ Bal W, 5-0 Ventura Jimenez 22,478 4/26 @ Bal L, 2-3 (10) Britton Duffy 34,941 4/27 @ Bal W, 9-3 Shields Gonzalez 38,368 5/15 KC L, 1-2 Chen Ventura 12,455 5/16 KC L, 0-4 Tillman Guthrie 25,985 5/17 KC W, 1-0 Duffy Norris 24,064 5/18 KC W, 8-6 Shields Jimenez 22,692 American League Championship Series 10/10 @ Bal W, 8-6 (10) Davis O’Day 47,124 10/11 @ Bal W, 6-4 Davis O’Day 46,912 10/14 KC 10/15 KC TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHERS (2014 Season): LHP Wei-Yin Chen (16-6, 3.54) vs. RHP Jeremy Guthrie (13-11, 4.13) 2014 2013 Career 2014 2013 Career Wei-Yin Chen vs. Royals 1-0 - 1-1 Major League Record 16-6 (3.54 ERA) 7-7 35-24 Jeremy Guthrie vs. Orioles 0-1 2-0 2-1 Major League Record 13-11 (4.13 ERA) 15-12 83-100 JEREMY GUTHRIE makes his postseason debut tonight, facing one of his former teams...once an Oriole, Jeremy has pitched against Baltimore four times in his career, including twice this season, going 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA...he’s in the second year of a 3-year deal after being acquired from Colorado for Jonathan Sanchez on July 20, 2012. A WINNER IN THE CLINCHER--Jeremy last worked on September 26, tossing 7.0 shutout innings in the Royals’ 3-1 triumph at U.S. Cellular Field, which wrapped up Kansas City’s playoff spot...the veteran righty allowed no runs on 4 hits with a walk and 6 strikeouts in the outing, firing 93 pitches...it was his longest scoreless outing of the season...before Guthrie had even thrown a pitch in Chicago, his offense staked him to a 3-0 lead, thanks to RBI hits from Nori Aoki, Lorenzo Cain and Billy Butler in the top of the first...the win was Jeremy’s 13th of the year and 33rd since joining the Royals mid-season in 2012...his 33 victories are the ninth-most in the American League in that span, one shy of teammate James Shields and Angels’ lefty C.J. Wilson (34), who are tied for seventh. AGE IS JUST A NUMBER--At 35 years, 189 days old, Jeremy will become the eldest Royal to start a postseason game, passing the late Paul Splittorff, who made his final postseason start on October 10, 1980 at Yankee Stadium (Game 3 - ALCS) at 34 years, 2 days...Guthrie is also the oldest starting pitcher to make his postseason debut since former Mets righty Steve Trachsel (35 years, 341 days) did it in Game 3 of the 2006 National League Division Series vs. the Dodgers (Oct. 7). DEALING DOWN THE STRETCH--Guthrie was 8-2 over his final 12 starts, with the win total tying him for second in the A.L. from July 26 on, trailing only L.A.’s Matt Shoemaker (9)...he was named the Royals Pitcher of the Month for September after going 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA over 5 outings, including a 0.89 ERA at home.

POSTSEASON WINNING STREAK--It’s been 29 years in the making, but the Royals now have a 9-game postseason winning streak, including a 6-0 mark this year...the last time Kansas City trailed at the end of an

Royals Notes - Baltimore Orioles @ Kansas City Royals - Tuesday, October 14, 2014

This & ThatBOMBS AWAY--Kansas City’s lack of power in the regular season has been well documented with a Major League least 95 home runs during the 162-game slate, but the Royals are more than making up for it since the postseason kicked off...after going homerless in the 9-8, 12-inning Wild Card win over Oakland, KC has powered eight home runs in its last five games...Mike Moustakas has homered four times already to tie the franchise record for most home runs in a single postseason, a mark that was set by Willie Aikens in 1980...in franchise history, only George Brett clubbed most postseason home runs in his career with 10...Moose is also just the second ninth-place hitter since 1903 to hammer four home runs in a postseason, tying Adam Kennedy from the 2002 Angels...Jason Varitek has four in his postseason career from the nine-hole...Moose has gone deep in four of the last five games, clubbing the game-winner in the opener of the ALDS in Anaheim with an 11th inning shot, while Eric Hosmer has hit a pair of home runs, one a game-winner in Anaheim in the 11th frame of Game #2 of the ALDS...Alcides Escobar and Alex Gordon joined the long ball party on Friday night with their first of the postseason, Gordon’s the game-winner in the 10th.

AND THE SHORT GAME PAYING OFF TOO--The Royals, who finished the year second in the American League in infield hits with 158, have already accumulated a dozen infield knocks in this postseason, nine more than any other playoff competitor...the Orioles and Giants are a distant second with three apiece...Kansas City featured four in the Top 14 individually in infield knocks with Lorenzo Cain tied for third (28), Nori Aoki tied for sixth (27), Alcides Escobar tied for 12th (24) and Jarrod Dyson tied for 14th (22).

HOME GROWN ROYALS--It was never a secret that for the Royals to contend, they’d have to do it with the combination of home grown talent and then enhance the roster via the trade and free agent route...of the 25 players on the ALCS active roster, 13 were drafted or signed originally by the Royals...the group includes (draft round-year): Terrance Gore (20th-2011), Jarrod Dyson (50th-2006), Alex Gordon (1st-2005), Mike Moustakas (1st-2007), Salvador Perez (non-drafted free agent-2006), Billy Butler (1st-2004), Christian Colon (1st-2010), Brandon Finnegan (1st-2014), Yordano Ventura (non-drafted free agent-2008), Eric Hosmer (1st-2008), Kelvin Herrera (non-drafted free agent-2006), Danny Duffy (3rd-2007) and Greg Holland (10th-2007).

AND THE REST OF THE SQUAD--The remaining dozen of the 2014 squad arrived via trades and free agency...that group includes (how acquired): Alcides Escobar and Lorenzo Cain (trade with Milwaukee-Dec., 2010), Josh Willingham (trade with Minnesota-2014), Jeremy Guthrie (trade with Colorado-July, 2012), Omar Infante (free agent-Dec., 2013), Wade Davis and James Shields (trade with Tampa Bay-Dec., 2012), Erik Kratz (trade with Toronto-July, 2014), Nori Aoki (trade with Milwaukee-Dec., 2013), Jason Vargas (free agent-Nov., 2013), Jason Frasor (trade with Texas-July, 2014) and Tim Collins (trade with Atlanta-July, 2010).

PEN CONTINUES TO ROLL--The Royals are showing the nation what Kansas Citians came to appreciate this summer with one of the top bullpens in the game...KC’s relief corps worked 3.1 scoreless innings on Saturday, to go with 5.0 frames of 1-run relief in Friday’s extra-inning victory...the pen enters tonight with 8.1 consecutive scoreless innings after allowing a run in the sixth frame of Friday’s game...all told, in the last five postseason games, the KC pen has allowed three runs in 21.0 innings for a 1.29 ERA...youthful southpaws Danny Duffy and rookie Brandon Finnegan each earned wins in the ALDS, while Wade Davis has worked 3.0 scoreless innings in this series to gain both wins and Greg Holland has recorded four saves, two in this series, giving him 50 on the year, which includes his 47 regular season rescues...Davis is the first pitcher to win the first two games of a postseason series since Atlanta’s Alejandro Pena in 1995.

RUNNIN’ ROYALS--The Royals swiped their 13th base of this postseason when Lorenzo Cain pilfered second base on Saturday...KC has used eight different thieves to attain the 13 steals...KC opened the playoffs by tying an MLB postseason record with seven thefts in the win over Oakland, with seven different Royals recording steals...for the second straight year, the Royals led the Majors in stolen bases with 153 both this year and last season...Jarrod Dyson, despite being a part-time player, has swiped 30, 34 and now 36 in his last three seasons, totaling 100 bags in that span which is seventh among all big league thieves, most of whom play every day...KC was the only big league club with three players with at least 25 thefts, as Dyson is joined by Alcides Escobar (31) and Cain (28), marking the first time for the franchise since U.L. Washington, Willie Wilson and John Wathan each swiped at least 25 bags in 1983.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING--This 2014 version of the Kansas City Royals entered the September 30 Wild Card Game with only five players who had previous postseason experience with Wade Davis, Omar Infante, Jayson Nix, James Shields and Raul Ibanez...with Ibanez and Nix inactive for the ALDS and now the ALCS, KC is down to three who have experience in October baseball.

HOLLY HAS ANOTHER SOLID YEAR--Greg Holland finished the regular season with 46 saves, good for second in the A.L. in saves and is the first Royal to record back-to-back 40-save seasons for Kansas City since Dan Quisenberry did it in 1983 (45) and ‘84 (44)...while postseason stats are not included in the regular season total, Holly has now made good on 50 of his 52 save tries this year, including 43 of the last 44 and 24 in a row after last night’s rescue...over a longer haul in regular season play, Holland has converted 86 of his last 89 attempts (96.6%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has five more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 81) and Holland has allowed just 14 earned runs in 113.1 innings for a 1.11 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 113-for-123, the best save pct. at 91.9 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities.

GORE A BLUR ON THE BASES--Terrance Gore, a 23-year old outfielder from Macon, GA, has had a meteoric rise this season, culminating with a little over a month in the Majors thanks to the wheels he possesses...KC’s 20th round selection in 2011, Gore’s year began in Wilmington, KC’s Class A club in the Carolina League, where he pilfered 36 bags in 40 tries...to prepare him for a potential September big league audition, Gore was moved to Omaha (AAA), where he swiped 11 bases in 14 tries...he was then added as part of the September roster expansion and went 5-for-5 as a big league base thief...Gore has proven to be such a threat on the bases that he has been on each postseason roster to this point and swiped three bags in his first three games in the playoffs.

A LOOK BACK AT ‘14--Kansas City snapped its postseason dry spell with an 89-73 season, capped a week ago today with a 6-4 win over the White Sox in Chicago to finish one game behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central...the rollercoaster ride that was the 2014 season saw the Royals trail by as many as 6 1/2 games after play on June 1, only to reel off a 13-2 stretch to take a 1 1/2-game advantage in the Central on June 18...KC then fell into a 9-18 skid from June 19-July 21 to fall to eight games behind the Tigers, but a win in Chicago on July 22 jumpstarted a season-ending stretch in which the Royals were 41-23 and popped champagne corks for the first time in 29 years on September 26 with a win over the White Sox in U.S. Cellular Field...the two combatants in the ALCS were the two winningest teams in the American League from July 22 on, with the Royals posting 41 victories and the O’s 42...the 89-victory season marked the most by the Kansas City franchise since winning 92 games in 1989...KC has coupled its last two seasons for a 175-149 mark for a .540 winning pct.

89-WIN YEAR--The Royals recorded 89 victories, the most for the franchise since going 92-70 in 1989...with 86 wins last year and 89 this season, Kansas City has eclipsed the 86-win mark in consecutive years for the first time since 1977 (102) and 1978 (92)...the last two full seasons KC had a winning mark was 1988-89, when the Royals went 84-77 and 92-70, respectively.

KEEPING IT IN THE YARD--The bullpen duo of Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera combined for 140.0 homerless innings during the 2014 regular season...Davis tossed 72.0 frames and allowed only five extra-base hits (four doubles and a triple), while Herrera fired 68.0 innings and gave up 12 extra-base knocks (all doubles)...Davis, Herrera and the Dodgers’ Brandon League were the only three pitchers in the Majors who have worked at least 60.0 innings with no home runs surrendered.

DAVIS SETS RELIEF STRIKEOUT MARK--The breakout bullpen year of Wade Davis ended with 109 strikeouts, breaking the team record for a reliever held by fellow bullpen-mate Greg Holland, set last year, and Jim York, a reliever for KC in 1971 (103)...Davis attained his 109 K’s in 72.0 innings for a 13.6 strikeout to 9-inning ratio, the third best mark in the A.L. (minimum 60.0 innings).

NED LONGEST TENURED KC SKIPPER--Ned Yost has been at the helm for 775 regular season games as the Kansas City manager, surpassing Royals’ Hall of Famer skipper Dick Howser (770) for the most games managed in franchise history, and becoming the first manager since Howser to lead the Royals to the postseason...Yost has a 373-402 ledger as KC’s manager, including a 175-149 (.540) mark in the last two seasons...coupled with 457 wins in Milwaukee, Yost is tied for 73rd on the all-time managerial win list with 830 over his 11-year career, matching Fred Hutchinson’s total in a 12-year career as a skipper of the Tigers, Cardinals and Reds.
