THE 2014 KANSAS CITY ROYALS POST-SEASON GUIDE IS AVAILABLE ON-LINE AT MLBPRESSBOX.COM KC GETS 2-1 JUMP WITH ANOTHER NAILBITER--For the first time in three World Series, the Royals possess a 2-1 advantage by virtue of a 3-2 win over the Giants in front of a raucous house at AT&T Park on Friday night...Kansas City plated a first inning run thanks to Alcides Escobar’s game-opening double and then two huge runs in the sixth via RBI knocks from Alex Gordon and birthday boy Eric Hosmer, then held on with its lockdown bullpen...Jeremy Guthrie provided five shutout innings, but ran into a jam to open the sixth, but the quartet of Kelvin Herrera, Brandon Finnegan, Wade Davis and Greg Holland combined for four hitless innings of relief to hold San Francisco at bay...the win ran KC’s postseason record to 10-1 this year, with seven of those contests decided by two runs or less, including five one-run victories. STU-“PEN”-DOUS WORK BY RELIEVERS--The Kansas City bullpen tacked on another four shutout innings last night, capped with Greg Holland’s first save in the World Series and seventh of this postseason...Holland’s seven rescues have tied the Major League record for a single postseason joining fellow relievers John Wetteland (1996 Yankees), Robb Nen (2002 Giants), Troy Percival (2002 Angels), Brad Lidge (2008 Phillies) and Koji Uehara (2013 Red Sox)...the combined work of Brandon Finnegan, Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Holland have held Giants’ hitters to a collective 1-for-28 in this series with 10 strikeouts...Davis tossed a scoreless eighth last night to lower his postseason ERA to 0.79, allowing one run in 11.1 innings with 14 strikeouts...overall, the KC bullpen has gone 7-0 while compiling a 1.66 ERA, giving up nine earned runs in 48.2 frames. BEST TRIO EVER???--The Royals are displaying in the postseason what Kansas Citians came to appreciate this summer with one of the top bullpens in the game...the trifecta of Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland were the first trio in history to make at least 60 appearances each and record individual ERA’s of under 1.50... in this postseason the trio has combined to work 32.1 innings, allowing three earned runs for a 0.84 ERA while fanning 39...they’ve been even better in their last five postseason contests dating back to the ALCS vs. Baltimore, working a combined 16.2 consecutive scoreless innings, allowing just six hits while fanning 17. PERFECT ROAD PLAY--The Royals ran their record to 5-0 on the road this postseason with last night’s victory after going 2-0 in Anaheim in the ALDS and Baltimore in the ALCS...those figures are even better than KC’s solid regular season work, posting a 47-34 ledger away from ‘The K’, five wins better the home ledger during the season (42-39)...the road year turned around in Chicago, as KC entered play on July 22 in Chicago with a 26-25 road mark, but then reeled off a 21-9 record in road tilts, matching the Angels for the most road wins in that span...counting the postseason, KC is now 10-1-1 in its last 12 road series played. A WORLD SERIES FIRST--With his appearance last night, Royals reliever Brandon Finnegan became the first player ever to appear in the College World Series and the Fall Classic in the same year...the 21-year old southpaw, who recorded a flyout and strikeout with a man aboard in the seventh last night, was drafted by the Royals in the first round (17th overall) this past June at the same time he was helping Texas Christian University advance to the second round of this year’s College World Series. SOLID VS. SENIOR CIRCUIT--Though the stakes are much higher this week, playing against the National League in 2014 was not an issue for the Royals, especially on the road...Kansas City posted a big league best 15-5 mark against the Senior Circuit, with all but four of those games occurring against the National League West...KC also went 8-2 on the road vs. the N.L., losing their first meeting in San Diego before winning eight in a row and then losing the N.L. road finale in Denver. POSTSEASON RECAP--Kansas City has run its 2014 postseason record to 10-1 with consecutive wins over the Giants...KC was the first club in history to open a postseason 8-0, a streak that began the Royals coming back from a 7-3 deficit in the eighth inning of the Wild Card Game against Oakland’s Jon Lester to eventually post a 9-8 victory over the A’s in 12 innings...from there, the Royals swept three from the Angels, highlighted by back-to-back 11-inning wins in Anaheim and then kept the dream alive with a 4-game sweeping of Baltimore, taking the first two in Camden Yards and then finishing things off at home with consecutive 2-1 wins. TONIGHT’S STARTING PITCHERS (Postseason stats): LHP Jason Vargas (1-0, 2.38) vs. RHP Ryan Vogelsong (0-0, 5.19) Regular Season 2014 2013 Career 2014 2013 Career Jason Vargas vs. Giants 0-0 - 0-1 Major League Record 11-10 (3.71 ERA) 9-8 62-68 Ryan Vogelsong vs. Royals - - 0-0 Major League Record 8-13 (4.00 ERA) 4-6 49-57 JASON VARGAS takes the hill for his first World Series appearance and third start of the postseason...he posted an 11-10 record in his first season with KC, reaching double-digit wins for the third time in the last 4 seasons...he’s 0-1 in three regular season starts vs. the Giants in his career...the Apple Valley, Calif. native signed a 4-year free- agent deal with the Royals on November 22, 2013, after pitching for the Angels last year. CLAIMING THE CLINCHER--Jason last pitched in Game #4 of the American League Championship Series, earning a 2-1 victory as the Royals completed a 4-game sweep of Baltimore...the veteran lefty allowed just a run on 2 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts over 5.1 innings...Ryan Flaherty’s solo homer in the third was the only blemish on Vargy’s start, with J.J. Hardy’s two-out single in the second inning being the only other hit he gave up...Jason enduced a pair of double plays to erase leadoff walks in both the second and fourth innings, while he fanned 4 of the final 7 Orioles he faced...he departed with one out and one on in the sixth inning, leaving a 2-1 lead in the hands of the Royals bullpen, which recorded the final 11 outs...Vargas has allowed 3 runs over 11.1 innings in his first 2 postseason starts with all 3 coming on solo home runs. CAREER-BEST ERA--Despite a rough September, Jason recorded a career-best 3.71 ERA this season, besting his 3.78 mark with Seattle in 2010...his ERA was tops by a qualifying Royals lefty since Charlie Leibrandt posted a 3.19 earned run average in 1988...he enters his third postseason start with a 2.38 ERA, which is fourth- lowest in KC postseason history among hurlers that have thrown at least 10.0 innings. ATTACKING THE ZONE--Vargas also posted a career-best 1.97 walks per 9.0 innings (41 BB in 187.0 IP) during the regular season, which tied with fellow left- handed pitcher Jon Lester for 10th-lowest in the A.L....it was also tied for the third-lowest among qualifying American League southpaws. RUN SUPPORT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE--Vargy posted just 3 victories over his final 12 regular season outings partially due to a lack of run support...the Royals scored just 3.19 runs per 9.0 innings with the lefty on the hill after July 4, which was the eighth-lowest in the A.L. among hurlers with at least 60.0 innings in that span...by contrast, Jason was 8-3 over his first 18 starts, receiving 5.13 runs per 9.0 innings in that span...however, he needed just 2 Royals runs to earn the win in Game #4 of the ALCS. HE GOT GAME--Though he did not bat this year, Jason has some skill in the batter’s box, going 2-for-5 last season and has an impressive .262 lifetime average (16-for-61) with three doubles and four RBI. VS. THE GIANTS--Jason has faced San Francisco three times in his career, including once during the 2014 regular season, taking a no-decision on August 8, allowing 2 runs on 9 hits over 5.0 innings in a 4-2 KC triumph...he’s 0-1 with a 3.15 ERA (7 ER in 20.0 IP) with 3 walks and 13 strikeouts in his 3 outings...his lone decision – a 4-2 defeat – came at Safeco Field on June 15, 2012, when he surrendered 4 runs on 10 hits over 8.0 innings...he has never started a regular season game at AT&T Park. Jason’s Last Win: October 15 vs. Baltimore (5.1 IP, 2-1 over Miguel Gonzalez) Jason’s Last Loss: September 19 vs. Detroit (3.1 IP, 1-10 to Justin Verlander) Jason’s Strikeout High: 10, Twice, last on June 26, 2012 vs. Oakland (6.2 IP, no decision in a 3-2 win) Jason’s Last Complete Game: and Shutout August 13, 2014 vs. Oakland (9.0 IP, 3-0 over Scott Kazmir) - 11th career CG & 6th shutout Vargas vs. Giants Player AVG. GUTHRIE A WORLD SERIES FIRST--Last night’s starter, Jeremy Guthrie, became the first starting pitcher in World Series history to earn a victory without allowing a walk or striking out a batter during a Fall Classic outing...in addition, he was the fifth starter in World Series history to earn a win without a strikeout, and the first since Bob Turley of the Yankees in Game #2 of the 1960 World Series...the others to do so were Hugh McQuillan of the Giants (Game #3-1924), Washington’s Tom Zachary (Game #2-1924) and Boston’s Babe Ruth (Game #4-1918)...Guthrie was the fifth starting pitcher in World Series history and the first since Atlanta’s Greg Maddux in Game #2 of the 1996 Fall Classic against the Yankees to not record a walk or a strikeout through at least 5.0 innings pitched.

HOLLY ROLLS ON--Greg Holland finished the regular season with 46 saves and has gone 6-for-6 in this postseason, including a big league record tying 4-for-4 in the ALCS, joining Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley as the only pitchers to accomplish that feat since the ALCS went to a best-of-seven format...while postseason stats are not included in the regular season total, with six saves to this point Holly has now made good on 53 of his 55 save tries this year, including 46 of the last 47 and 27 in a row after last night’s rescue...over a longer haul in regular season play, Holland has converted 86 of his last 89 attempts (96.6%) since May 30 of last season, the highest percentage among closers with at least 40 opportunities in that span...since that date, Greg has five more saves than any other pitcher in baseball (Craig Kimbrel - 81) and Holland allowed just 14 earned runs in 113.1 innings for a 1.11 ERA...he recorded his 100th career save on August 8 and since posting his first career save on August 3, 2011 vs. Baltimore, Holland has gone 113-for-123, the best save pct. at 91.9 among closers with at least 100 save opportunities.

WILD CARD SERIES--This 2014 World Series marks the second time that a pair of Wild Card qualifiers are squaring off for the World Championship, the other occurring in 2002 when these San Francisco Giants battled the Angels, losing the series in seven games to the Halos...the Royals rolled through Oakland (Wild Card Game), the Los Angeles Angels (3-0 in ALDS) and Baltimore (4-0 in ALCS) to get to this final stop of 2014.

FOUR NOT NECESSARY IN GAME #3--Kansas City didn’t need to reach their “magic number” last night, clinging to a 3-2 victory in the third game of this 2014 World Series...the Royals hold a 6-0 ledger when plating at least four runs, which is consistent with the club’s success over the last two seasons...KC has put up some phenomenal numbers when the offense has been able to get at least four runs across the plate in a game over the last two seasons...during the regular season, KC was 69-14 when scoring at least four runs and combined with last year (64-14), the Royals are 105 games over .500 during the regular season when scoring at least four runs (133-28).

SHARPENING THE SHORT GAME--The Royals, who finished the year second in the American League in infield hits with 158, have already accumulated 16 infield knocks in this postseason, easily the most of any of the playoff participants this October...the closest competition in infield hits this October are the Giants with four...Kansas City featured four in the Top 14 individually in infield knocks with Lorenzo Cain tied for third (28), Nori Aoki tied for sixth (27), Alcides Escobar tied for 12th (24) and Jarrod Dyson tied for 14th (22).

BOMBS AWAY--Kansas City clubbed its 10th home run of this postseason with Wednesday’s blast by Omar Infante...it was the 12th World Series homer in franchise history, joining the likes of Willie Aikens (4), Amos Otis (3), Salvador Perez George Brett, Frank White and Darryl Motley...Mike Moustakas has homered four times in this postseason to tie the franchise record for most home runs in a single postseason, a mark that was set by Aikens in 1980...in franchise history, only George Brett clubbed most postseason home runs in his career with 10...Moose is also just the second ninth-place hitter since 1903 to hammer four home runs in a postseason, tying Adam Kennedy from the 2002 Angels...Jason Varitek has four in his postseason career from the nine-hole.

HOME GROWN ROYALS--It was never a secret that for the Royals to contend, they’d have to do it with the combination of home grown talent and then enhance the roster via the trade and free agent route...of the 25 players on the World Series active roster, 12 were drafted or signed originally by the Royals...the group includes (draft round-year): Terrance Gore (20th-2011), Jarrod Dyson (50th-2006), Alex Gordon (1st-2005), Mike Moustakas (1st-2007), Salvador Perez (non-drafted free agent-2006), Billy Butler (1st-2004), Brandon Finnegan (1st-2014), Yordano Ventura (non-drafted free agent-2008), Eric Hosmer (1st-2008), Kelvin Herrera (non-drafted free agent-2006), Danny Duffy (3rd-2007) and Greg Holland (10th-2007).

RUNNIN’ ROYALS--The Royals have swiped 13 bases in this postseason, using eight different thieves to accomplish the total...KC opened the playoffs by tying an MLB postseason record with seven thefts in the win over Oakland, with seven different Royals recording steals...for the second straight year, the Royals led the Majors in stolen bases with 153 both this year and last season...Jarrod Dyson, despite being a part-time player, has swiped 30, 34 and now 36 in his last three seasons, totaling 100 bags in that span which was seventh among all big league thieves, most of whom play every day...KC was the only big league club with three players with at least 25 thefts, as Dyson is joined by Alcides Escobar (31) and Cain (28), marking the first time for the franchise since U.L. Washington, Willie Wilson and John Wathan each swiped at least 25 bags in 1983.

ON-THE-JOB TRAINING--This 2014 version of the Kansas City Royals entered the September 30 Wild Card Game with only five players who had previous postseason experience with Wade Davis, Omar Infante, Jayson Nix, James Shields and Raul Ibanez...with Ibanez inactive for the World Series, KC is down to four who have previous experience in October baseball.

A LOOK BACK AT ‘14--Kansas City snapped its postseason dry spell with an 89-73 season, capped a week ago today with a 6-4 win over the White Sox in Chicago to finish one game behind the Detroit Tigers in the American League Central...the rollercoaster ride that was the 2014 season saw the Royals trail by as many as 6 1/2 games after play on June 1, only to reel off a 13-2 stretch to take a 1 1/2-game advantage in the Central on June 18...KC then fell into a 9-18 skid from June 19-July 21 to fall to eight games behind the Tigers, but a win in Chicago on July 22 jumpstarted a season-ending stretch in which the Royals were 41-23 and popped champagne corks for the first time in 29 years on September 26 with a win over the White Sox in U.S. Cellular Field...the two combatants in the ALCS were the two winningest teams in the American League from July 22 on, with the Royals posting 41 victories and the Orioles 42...the 89-victory season marked the most by the Kansas City franchise since winning 92 games in 1989...KC has coupled its last two seasons for a 175-149 mark for a .540 winning pct.

KEEPING IT IN THE YARD--The bullpen duo of Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera combined for 140.0 homerless innings during the 2014 regular season...Davis tossed 72.0 frames and allowed only five extra-base hits (four doubles and a triple), while Herrera fired 68.0 innings and gave up 12 extra-base knocks (all doubles)...Davis, Herrera and the Dodgers’ Brandon League were the only three pitchers in the Majors who worked at least 60.0 innings with no home runs surrendered in 2014.

DAVIS SETS RELIEF STRIKEOUT MARK--The breakout bullpen year of Wade Davis ended with 109 strikeouts, breaking the team record for a reliever held by fellow bullpen-mate Greg Holland, set last year, and Jim York, a reliever for KC in 1971 (103)...Davis attained his 109 K’s in 72.0 innings for a 13.6 strikeout to 9-inning ratio, the third best mark in the A.L. (minimum 60.0 innings).
