MOOSE DELIVERS CAREER FIRST--It took a comeback of season-high proportions, the first blown save by one of the most reliable closers in the Majors this year and a walk-off home run by a player who’d never hit one in his professional career, but when it was all over, the Royals came away with a 7-6 win in 13 innings over the Mariners on Thursday to take 3 of 4 in the series...Mike Moustakas, who had hit a 360+ foot foul ball earlier in the at bat, nailed a 368-foot shot into the Seattle bullpen to pull the curtain on the win and cap a day that started with the Mariners holding a 5-0 lead after four innings...it marked the third time this year that the Royals have trailed by as many as five runs and still rallied for a victory and Moose’s shot secured KC’s 38th come-from-behind win of the year, the second most in the A.L. and the sixth walk-off...the extra innings became necessary when Greg Holland, who had made good on 95% of his save situations (38-for-40), including 31 in a row, allowed a home run to pinch hitter Raul Ibanez with two out in the ninth to knot the score a 6-6, his first blown save since May 6...the KC offense supplied a season-high tying 19 hits, with Billy Butler leading the way with his third career 5-hit affair and Emilio Bonifacio chipping in with his third career 4-hit effort...the win cut Kansas City’s deficit in the Wild Card race to just 4 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay.

BILLY ADDS TO 5-KNOCK MARK--Kansas City designated hitter Billy Butler delivered five singles on Thursday, his third career 5-hit effort, second this year (May 13 at Anaheim)...only two other players in franchise history have had more than one 5-hit game in a season, Al Cowens (1977) and Joe Randa (1999)...Hall of Famer George Brett had four 5-hit games, but never more than one in the same year...as for Butler, he has now reached base safely in 28 consecutive home games, hitting safely in 25 of those affairs at a .396 clip (42-for-106) with 6 doubles, 4 home runs, 18 runs scored and 15 driven in...coupled with 14 walks in this stretch at Kauffman Stadium, Billy has a .467 on-base pct., .566 slugging pct. and 1.033 OPS...the streak started with a 2-for-4 affair on July 19 against these Detroit Tigers.

STAFF MAINTAINS TOP ERA--Kansas City’s staff has allowed six runs in each of the last two games, but still possess a sizeable lead in the American League ERA race with a 3.46 mark, well ahead of Oakland’s 3.61 staff ERA...in the last 12 games in which the Royals have gone 9-3, the staff has compiled a 2.21 ERA, allowing 27 earned runs in 110.0 innings...the bullpen has been particularly strong over the last dozen contests, posting a 1.16 mark (5 earned runs in 38.2 innings).

PEN GETS A WIN--The bullpen wound up with yesterday’s victory, but it didn’t come until Greg Holland absorbed his first blown save in 121 days and 31 attempts, allowing a game-tying home run with two out in the ninth inning...it was the only run the pen surrendered in 7.0 innings of work on Thursday as the Royals still own the best overall bullpen ERA in the American League at 2.50, trailing only Atlanta’s big league leading 2.32 mark...if the current 2.50 mark holds up over this final month, it would be the second best A.L. pen since 1982, with only Oakland’s 2.35 relief ERA in 1990 ranking better...the work of the revamped starting rotation this year has also taken a huge load off of the relief corps, as the Royals have worked the third fewest bullpen innings in the American League with 400.0...a year ago, Kansas City had the most used pen in the league and second most used pen in baseball with 561.1 innings, trailing only Colorado (657.0).

“THE STRETCH” WINDING DOWN--The Royals have only six more games in the stretch in which they will have played 44 games in 44 days, a span that began in Minneapolis on July 30, with Kansas City going 22-16 to this point...KC’s next scheduled off day is within sight, next Thursday, when the Royals are between series in Cleveland and Detroit...after having 5 games postponed because of a combination of the weather/police situations in April.

HOLLAND STREAK HALTED ON 3-2 PITCH--Greg Holland had the second longest consecutive save streak in franchise history halted yesterday when Raul Ibanez hit a ninth inning 2-out, 3-2 pitch into the Seattle bullpen to knot the score at 6-6, a contest the Royals would eventually win, 7-6 in 13...it was the first blown save for Holland since May 6 vs. Chicago as he remains tied for third in the league with 38...Holly came up five saves shy of Joakim Soria’s club record of 36 in a row without one getting away in 2010...despite allowing the run yesterday, just the third roundtripper he’s surrendered this year, the first-time All-Star in 2013 has now allowed just 4 earned runs since May 30, spanning 40.0 innings for a 0.90 ERA, while recording 61 strikeouts, a 13.7 strikeouts per 9-inning ratio in that span...yesterday was the first time Holland was scored upon since July 27, working 17 times, totaling 17.0 innings between runs allowed...Greg’s 38 overall saves sit alone in seventh on the all-time club single-season rescue list, just one behind the sixth best save year which was set by Jeff Montgomery with 39 in 1992...the club record is 45 by both Monty (1993) and Dan Quisenberry (1983)...Holland is just the fourth Royals relief pitcher to record 30+ saves in a season, joining Quisenberry (5 times), Montgomery (5 times) and Soria (3 times).

RUNNIN’ ROYALS--The Royals managed one stolen base in yesterday’s 13-inning marathon, upping their Major League leading total to 130, 13 more than National League leading Milwaukee and 20 more than A.L. runner-ups Boston and Texas...the Royals are also second in the Major Leagues in stolen base success rate at 84.0 while the Boston Red Sox are just ahead at 85.0, though Kansas City has attempted a 26 more thefts than Boston...Alcides Escobar is 18-for-18 in thefts, which has established a single-season consecutive theft record for the Royals, breaking the 16 in a row set in 1989 by Gary Thurman...the club record for consecutive steals over multiple seasons is held by Carlos Beltran with 33.

4-1 START TO FINAL MONTH--The Royals are off to their first 4-1 start to September since the 2008 season, but then the club lost 3 in a row...for the first time in a non-strike season since 1989, KC recorded four winnings months out of the first five of a year, finishing August at 16-15...Kansas City had a 14-10 mark in April, then scuffled to an 8-20 ledger in May, but rebounded for a 16-11 June and 15-10 July to preface this month...the ‘89 campaign featured a 16-8 April, 14-13 May, 14-12 June, 13-14 July and 21-8 August, before a 14-15 final month...the ‘94 strike-shortened year saw Kansas City post winning marks in May, June and July and was 6-4 in August when play was stopped.

GORDO BIDDING FOR GOLD AGAIN--Alex Gordon grabbed his big league best 13th and 14th assists on Saturday, his fifth career multi-assist game since becoming an outfielder...since making a position switch from third base to leftfield on a full-time basis in 2011, two-time Rawlings Gold Glove winner Gordon has led all outfielders in the game in assists with 51, 14 more than any active outfielder and 20 more than any other leftfielder...Gordon led the A.L. with 20 in 2011 and finished second to then-teammate Jeff Francoeur’s 19 last year with 17 of his own...the Kansas City outfield as a unit has compiled 137 outfield assists since the start of the 2011 season, 37 more than any other Major League club in that span.

DIVISIONAL WORK--Kansas City returns to A.L. Central play for the next dozen games, playing the Tigers (6) and Indians (6) exclusively...the Royals are 34-26 within the Central...Thursday’s win over the Mariners upped KC to 11-15 vs. the A.L. West with six still remaining (Seattle-3 and Texas-3)...Sunday in Toronto wrapped up play against the A.L. East with the Royals finishing 19-15 vs. that division...KC finished interleague work with a 9-11 record.

STARTERS SHOULDER THE LOAD--Despite allowing 5 runs on Thursday, Jeremy Guthrie managed to battle through 6.0 innings, the 103rd time this revamped starting rotation has contributed at least 6.0 innings in a start, 21 more than the entire total of 6.0-inning starts recorded by the 2012 staff with September still to play out...as a team, Royals starters have gone 7.0+ innings 50 times, which are 13 more than the 2012 staff had the entire season...this year, KC’s starters have logged 94.0 more innings (852.1) than the 2012 rotation did (758.1) through 140 games.
