Kansas City By the Days Monday 4-8 Tuesday 8-6 Wednesday 7-6 Thursday 4-1 Friday 4-11 Saturday 6-9 Sunday 5-10

ROSTER MOVE--Prior to tonight’s game, the Royals recalled lefthanded reliever Francisley Bueno from Omaha (AAA) and optioned last night’s starter, Ryan Verdugo, to the Storm Chasers...Bueno (#67), 31, allowed a run on 3 hits in 2.0 innings over 2 appearances for KC in June.

CAIN ABLE IN A PINCH--All Lorenzo Cain has done since he returned from the disabled list last Friday is hit the ball hard and he continued that trend last night when he was called upon to pinch hit in the seventh inning...he delivered his first home run as a Kansas City Royal, second blast of his career, a 2-run shot to leftfield to get KC within three runs of the Mariners...it was the second pinch blast of the year for the Royals, with Billy Butler providing the most dramatic with a 2-out, 2-strike game-tying shot on June 17 in St. Louis off Jason Motte to send the game to overtime with KC eventually prevailing, 5-3 in 15 innings...last night’s by Cain was the 72nd in franchise history...for trivia sake, Bob “Hawk” Taylor hit the first pinch shot in franchise history, a 3-run blast off of Detroit’s Dick Radatz on May 6, 1969 in Tiger Stadium...that ninth inning shot by Taylor turned a 6-4 deficit into a 7-6 win, capping a 5-run final frame for Kansas City.

WALKS SCARCE--Last night was Kansas City’s 10th game this year in which they did not receive a free pass and the second in the last three...the Royals are third in the Majors and lead the A.L. in fewest walks received with 227...conversely, KC leads the Majors in fewest strikeouts with 549.

BRINGING UP THE REAR IN STYLE--Kansas City’s nine-hole hitters to this point have the most run production and best batting average among all big league clubs...Lorenzo Cain’s 2-run pinch homer from that spot last night put the Royals ahead of Toronto in RBI from the ninth slot, with KC now recording 45 RBI at the very bottom of the order, which is one more than the Jays, while the Royals have hit at a .286 clip from the ninth spot with 26 doubles, also tops among big league clubs.

EXTENDED STAND AT MID POINT--Last night’s loss to the Mariners dropped the Royals to 1-4 through five games of this 10-game stand...Seattle is here through tomorrow, as the 4-game set concludes with a 1:10 matinee...Minnesota pays its second visit of the year beginning Friday for a weekend series before KC hits the road for seven in Anaheim (3) and Seattle (4)...the Royals are in the midst of 17 games in 17 days, with the next off day occurring on July 30 after the completion of the next road trip...KC is just 15-27 in Kauffman Stadium in 2012.

PEREZ STAYS HOT--Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez has been a welcome addition to the lineup since returning from left knee surgery that cost him nearly three months of the season...since joining the big league club for the first time in 2012 on June 22, the 22-year old receiver has hit safely in 16 of 18 games at a .364 clip (24-for-66) with 10 extra-base hits, including his first 11 games after returning from the disabled list...his average in that span is second among all Major League catchers with at least 60 at bats...Perez has also neurtralized the running game with the opposition stealing only one bag in his last 11 starts.

TWINS TO CLOSEOUT EXTENDED STAY--This 10-game stand will wrap up with Minnesota hitting town for a weekend visit starting Friday night...the Royals, who enter tonight leading the Twins by a 1/2 game for fourth in the A.L. Central, have gone just 3-6 vs. Minnesota to this point, including a 1-2 mark here...Kansas City trails the all-time series by a 311-356 margin, while the 44-year series is split in Kansas City at 167-167, including a slim 148-150 deficit in Kauffman Stadium.

ON CUSP OF ONE MILLION--The Royals drew 15,769 last night to up the season total to 986,599 for 42 dates, and should eclipse the 1,000,000 mark with tonight’s gathering...Kansas City has averaged 23,490 per contest this year, which is an increase of 4,792 per game over a year ago when the club had drawn 785,328 for the first 42 dates, an average of 18,698...tonight’s gathering will go up against 14,265 from the 43rd date a year ago which raised the 2011 total to 799,593.

NED AT THE HELM--The 16th full-time manager in franchise history, Ned Yost, was named to his post on May 13, 2010 and has recorded a 164-213 ledger since taking the reins...he recorded career win #600 on May 21 in Yankee Stadium...this is his second stint as a big league manager after nearly six full campaigns at the helm for the Milwaukee Brewers (2003-2008)...he compiled a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost, a catcher during his playing days, began his coaching career in the Atlanta organization, including 12 straight seasons on Bobby Cox’s big league staff (1991-2002).
