DANNY DUFFY returns to the mound for his 24th start and 30th overall appearance of the year, his 61st career outing (55th start)...it’s his fourth start of 2014 against Cleveland (fifth appearance) and seventh career appearance (sixth start) vs. the Tribe...Danny was selected in the third round of the 2007 June Free Agent Draft. BACK IN THE SADDLE--Duff makes his first start since September 6, when he made just one pitch at Yankee Stadium before experiencing tightness in his left shoulder... he missed a pair of starts, with righty Liam Hendriks filling in at home vs. Boston and Chicago...Danny has made 12 starts in his career with 6 or more days since his previous outing, going 7-2 with a 2.14 ERA (16 ER in 67.0 IP) in those outings. BREAKOUT SEASON--Danny’s won-loss record of 8-11 is as deceiving as they come, since he’s been one of the top pitchers in the A.L. this season, just 2 years removed from “Tommy John” surgery...his 2.47 ERA ranks fourth among A.L. pitchers with at least 140.0 innings, trailing only Chris Sale, Felix Hernandez and Jon Lester...Duff’s mark is tops all-time among KC lefties that pitched 100.0 or more frames in a season, ahead of Paul Splittorff’s 2.68 ERA in 1971 (43 ER in 144.1 IP)...Duff also ranks second-best in hits per 9.0 innings in the American League (6.50), behind “King Felix’s” 6.49 mark. LIMITED SUPPORT--After scoring 23 runs in Duffy’s first 3 August starts, the Royals have been held to 6 runs over his last 3 full outings, including only 3 runs while he’s in the game...the offense is averaging 3.38 runs per 9.0 innings for him, lowest among A.L. pitchers...Danny is the only A.L. pitcher with at least 20 starts, a sub-3.00 ERA and a losing record. TOUGH TO HIT--Danny enters tonight tied for the second-lowest opponents’ batting average (.201) among A.L. hurlers who have thrown at least 140.0 innings...it’s the lowest mark by a Royals lefty and second-best overall to Roger Nelson’s .196 mark in 1972...he has held left-handed hitters to a .129 mark (15-for-116), lowest in the Majors this year and third-best by a starter since 1974...righties haven’t fared much better, batting .223 (87-for-391) against Duff, third among A.L. southpaws and fifth in MLB. VS. CLEVELAND--Danny last faced the Tribe on August 31 in KC, the Sunday Night Baseball game that was suspended until this evening, with the Indians leading 4-2 in the 10th...he pitched 6.2 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits with 3 walks and 6 K’s...Cleveland scored on Michael Brantley’s 2-out double in the third and Mike Aviles’ sacrifice fly in the fourth, following Danny’s errant pickoff attempt...Duffy is 0-1 with a 2.08 ERA over 21.2 innings this year against the Tribe (5 ER), including 7.0 shutout innings on July 24 at home...he’s 1-1 over 6 career outings (5 starts), recording a 3.09 ERA, with the win here on July 31, 2011. ROAD SHOW--Duffy has been terrific on the road this year, ranking fifth among A.L. pitchers with 10 or more

road starts in both ERA (2.19) and opponents average (.215)...despite the success, he has a 6-7 road record...he’s 12-9 in his career on the road, compiling a 3.26 ERA.
