A NEW SAVE RECORD HOLDER--Greg Holland worked a scoreless ninth inning last night to record his record setting 46th save of the year, eclipsing the previous team record originally set in 1983 by Dan Quisenberry and matched 10 years later by Jeff Montgomery...Greg has made good on 39 of his last 40 attempts dating back to May 30...since that date, Holly has six more saves than any other reliever in the Majors, with Craig Kimbrel next with 33...a first-time All-Star in 2013, Holland has allowed just 4 earned runs since May 30, spanning 50.0 innings for a 0.72 ERA, while recording 75 strikeouts, a 13.5 strikeouts per 9-inning ratio in that span, which is also the best in the Majors in that span, while limiting the opposition to a .141 average. HOLLAND ALSO CLOSING IN ON “K” MARK--Fresh off of setting the franchise save record, Greg Holland is now just two strikeouts away from the team mark for K’s in a season by a reliever...with a pair of strikeouts last night, Holly became the second reliever in team annals to break the 100-K mark in a season with 101 and he trails only Jim York, who fanned 103 in 1971. STAFF HOLDS DOWN #1 SPOT--With three games left on the 2013 docket, Kansas City has maintained its #1 status in the American League ERA race with a 3.46 mark, easily topping second-place Oakland at 3.57...should KC manage to keep the season mark at 3.46 or better, it would be the club’s best season ERA since a 3.44 in 1978. BEST PEN IN FRANCHISE HISTORY--The Kansas City bullpen enters the last three games possessing the American League low 2.56 ERA trailing only Atlanta in the Majors (2.45)...if the current ERA doesn’t take a dramatic hit, it would be the best relief mark in franchise history, with the strike-shortened 1981 pen posting a 2.80 mark... the previous best full-season relief ERA was 2.92 in 1976...if the current mark holds up, it would be the second lowest by an A.L. pen since 1982, with only Oakland’s 2.35 relief ERA in 1990 ranking better. 84 WINS MATCH 20-YEAR MARK--Last night’s victory was the 84th of the season, the most for the franchise since an 84-78 ledger in 1993...the next triumph would give Kansas City its best win total since 1989 when that squad was 92-70...the Royals are now 40-38 away from “The K,” the most road wins since recording 43 in 2003. STRIKEOUT MARK ECLIPSED--Kansas City pitchers have ramped up the strikeouts of late and Luke Hochevar’s fanning of Marcus Semien in last night’s eighth inning was the 1,178th strikeout this year to establish a club record, breaking the previous mark of 1,177 set last year...in the last six seasons the Royals have recorded the top six strikeout years in franchise history with the mark set in 2013, followed by 2012 (1,177), 2009 (1,153), 2008 (1,085), 2011 (1,080) and 2010 (1,035). Royals vs. White Sox The Royals evened up the season work at 8-8 with last night’s win, the fifth in a row for KC here in U.S. Cellular Field...Kansas City trails the all-time work by a 332-356 margin, including a 145-198 deficit in the Windy City, specifically 75- 106 in “The Cell.” Date Site Score WP LP Att. 4/1 @ Chi L, 0-1 Sale Shields 39,012 4/3 @ Chi L, 2-5 Peavy Santana 14,213 4/4 @ Chi W, 3-1 Guthrie Floyd 15,036 5/4 KC W, 2-0 Guthrie (C) Axelrod 19,957 5/5 KC W, 6-5 (10) Holland Omogrosso 16,462 5/6 KC L, 1-2 (11) Crain Herrera 15,576 6/21 KC L, 1-9 Santiago Guthrie 33,830 6/22 KC L, 2-3 Crain Crow 20,364 6/23 KC W, 7-6 Hochevar Crain 18,622 7/26 @ Chi W, 5-1 Shields Quintana 18,342 7/27 @ Chi W, 1-0 Davis Sale (C) 26,172 7/28 @ Chi W, 4-2 (12) Crow Veal 24,079 8/20 KC L, 0-2 Danks Santana 13,060 8/21 KC L, 2-5 Rienzo Guthrie 13,083 8/22 KC L, 4-3 Petricka Hochevar 13,363 9/26 @ Chi W, 3-2 Guthrie Rienzo 16,434 9/27 @ Chi 9/28 @ Chi 9/29 @ Chi JAMES SHIELDS has one final shot in 2013 to record career win number 100 as this is his 34th and final start, 251 career start and 252 career appearance...this is his 17th career start vs. the White Sox and sixth in 2013...he was acquired as the centerpiece of a 7-player deal with the Tampa Bay Rays on December 9, 2012. NO DECISION IN THRILLING HOME FINALE--James closed out the home schedule last Sunday vs. Texas, holding the Rangers scoreless on 6 hits and a walk over 8.0 innings, but neither team could dent the scoreboard until Justin Maxwell hit a walk- off grand slam in the 10th for a 4-0 KC win...Shields’ performance was particularly impressive since he worked the final 5.2 innings of his stint after taking a David Murphy line drive off of his right elbow in the third...the extra-inning game was the sixth time that James started a contest that went overtime, which are half of his 12 no-decisions, with KC going 4-2 in those bonus baseball affairs. WINNING LATELY--James pitched well early, posting a 2.92 ERA in 16 starts through June 23, however, had but a 2-6 record to show for it...he’s since gone 10-3 over his last 17 starts, with the win total tied for first in the Majors since June 28. QUALITY AND QUANTITY--James has been a workhorse this season, leading the American League in innings pitched (221.2) and quality starts (26)...he’s also eighth in strikeouts (186) and ERA (3.21). STRONGER AS HE GOES--The old adage, better get to the great ones early or else has proven true with Shields this season...23 of his 79 earned runs have come in the first inning of games for a 6.27 ERA, while he has a 2.67 ERA from the second inning on. VS. CHICAGO--James has become familiar with the Sox in his first season as a Royal, with this is his sixth start out of the 19 between the clubs and third opposing Chris Sale...Shields is 1-1 this year, recording a 2.18 ERA over 33.0 innings (8 ER), with both decisions here at “The Cell”...the win was here on July 26, tossing 7.0 shutout innings while scattering 8 hits in a 5-1 triumph...the loss occurred here on Opening Day, when the Sox used a Tyler Flowers home run for the game’s lone tally...James is 4-4 with a 3.97 ERA over 16 career starts vs. the South Siders. ROAD WARRIOR--James has been outstanding on the road this year, going 9-3 with a Major League-leading 2.12 ERA over 17 starts (27 ER in 114.2 IP)...the win total ties him for second in the A.L...the first Royal to win 9 times on the road since Paul Byrd in 2002, James can become the first to 10 since Tim Belcher in 1998...he carries a career 48-45 road record with a 4.18 ERA. James’ Last Win: September 16 vs. Cleveland (6.0 IP, 7-1 over Scott Kazmir) James’ Last Loss: September 6 vs. Detroit (3.2 IP, 2-16 to Anibal Sanchez) James’ Strikeout High: 15, October 2, 2012 vs. Baltimore (9.0 IP, 1-0 loss to Miguel Gonzalez) James’ Last Complete Game: May 17, 2013 at Oakland (8.0 IP, 2-1 loss to Jarrod Parker) - 21st career James’ Last Shutout: September 9, 2012 vs. Texas (6-0 over Roy Oswalt) - 8th career Shields vs. White Sox Player AVG. SLEEP IS OVERRATED--Rest wasn’t much of an option for the Royals, who traveled to Chicago on Wednesday night/Thursday morning thanks to a night game in Seattle...despite being deprived a full night of shuteye, Kansas City was awake enough to record a 3-2 win here last night for the 84th triumph of the year, the most wins since an 84-win 1993 campaign...KC used both the long and short ball last night, with David Lough giving the Royals a 2-1 advantage with a 2-run homer in the fourth, but after Chicago tied the game with its second solo homer of the night, the Royals used a bunt hit and bad throw to push the tie-breaking run across in the seventh...that was enough for Jeremy Guthrie and the bullpen to record the win, with @TheRealJGuts (twitter handle) finishing his top career season with 15 victories and then Greg Holland set the all-time save mark with his 46th.A NEW SAVE RECORD HOLDER--Greg Holland worked a scoreless ninth inning last night to record his record setting 46th save of the year, eclipsing the previous team record originally set in 1983 by Dan Quisenberry and matched 10 years later by Jeff Montgomery...Greg has made good on 39 of his last 40 attempts dating back to May 30...since that date, Holly has six more saves than any other reliever in the Majors, with Craig Kimbrel next with 33...a first-time All-Star in 2013, Holland has allowed just 4 earned runs since May 30, spanning 50.0 innings for a 0.72 ERA, while recording 75 strikeouts, a 13.5 strikeouts per 9-inning ratio in that span, which is also the best in the Majors in that span, while limiting the opposition to a .141 average.

STAFF HOLDS DOWN #1 SPOT--With three games left on the 2013 docket, Kansas City has maintained its #1 status in the American League ERA race with a 3.46 mark, easily topping second-place Oakland at 3.57...should KC manage to keep the season mark at 3.46 or better, it would be the club’s best season ERA since a 3.44 in 1978.BEST PEN IN FRANCHISE HISTORY--The Kansas City bullpen enters the last three games possessing the American League low 2.56 ERA trailing only Atlanta in the Majors (2.45)...if the current ERA doesn’t take a dramatic hit, it would be the best relief mark in franchise history, with the strike-shortened 1981 pen posting a 2.80 mark...the previous best full-season relief ERA was 2.92 in 1976...if the current mark holds up, it would be the second lowest by an A.L. pen since 1982, with only Oakland’s 2.35 relief ERA in 1990 ranking better.84 WINS MATCH 20-YEAR MARK--Last night’s victory was the 84th of the season, the most for the franchise since an 84-78 ledger in 1993...the next triumph would give Kansas City its best win total since 1989 when that squad was 92-70...the Royals are now 40-38 away from “The K,” the most road wins since recording 43 in 2003.STRIKEOUT MARK ECLIPSED--Kansas City pitchers have ramped up the strikeouts of late and Luke Hochevar’s fanning of Marcus Semien in last night’s eighth inning was the 1,178th strikeout this year to establish a club record, breaking the previous mark of 1,177 set last year...in the last six seasons the Royals have recorded the top six strikeout years in franchise history with the mark set in 2013, followed by 2012 (1,177), 2009 (1,153), 2008 (1,085), 2011 (1,080) and 2010 (1,035).

Royals vs. White Sox The Royals evened up the season work at 8-8 with last night’s win, the fifth in a row for KC here in U.S. Cellular Field...Kansas City trails the all-time work by a 332-356 margin, including a 145-198 deficit in the Windy City, specifically 75-106 in “The Cell.”Date Site Score WP LP Att.4/1 @ Chi L, 0-1 Sale Shields 39,0124/3 @ Chi L, 2-5 Peavy Santana 14,2134/4 @ Chi W, 3-1 Guthrie Floyd 15,0365/4 KC W, 2-0 Guthrie (C) Axelrod 19,9575/5 KC W, 6-5 (10) Holland Omogrosso 16,4625/6 KC L, 1-2 (11) Crain Herrera 15,5766/21 KC L, 1-9 Santiago Guthrie 33,8306/22 KC L, 2-3 Crain Crow 20,3646/23 KC W, 7-6 Hochevar Crain 18,6227/26 @ Chi W, 5-1 Shields Quintana 18,342 7/27 @ Chi W, 1-0 Davis Sale (C) 26,1727/28 @ Chi W, 4-2 (12) Crow Veal 24,0798/20 KC L, 0-2 Danks Santana 13,0608/21 KC L, 2-5 Rienzo Guthrie 13,0838/22 KC L, 4-3 Petricka Hochevar 13,3639/26 @ Chi W, 3-2 Guthrie Rienzo 16,4349/27 @ Chi9/28 @ Chi9/29 @ Chi
