IS TQM A TOTAL SOLUTION
Introduction
Firstly I would like to define What TQM means.
As per Wikipedia definition "TQM is an integrative philosophy of management for
continuously improving the quality of products & processes"
Issues
The core concept in implementing TQM is Deming's 14 Points, a set of management
practices to help companies increase their profit & productivity.
Actual the term "Total Quality Management" has lost favor in the United States in
recent years: "Quality Management" is commonly substituted TQM, however, is still
used extensively in Europe.
The main blow to the TQM concept happened to be during 1990s.
The management got frustrated with TQM and faced new problems, resulting making
up their mind that TQM couldn't solve them.
The fact is that, it was not the failure of TQM rather it was the failure of the
companies to fully engage some points of TQM.

Companies were more interested in showing quarterly profits and the allure of quick
fixes and new approaches, and the fact that people's deeply ingrained attitudes are
hard to see and change all contributed to companies falling away from TQM.
One of the key issues here is that processes can only change if culture changes and
culture can only change if people are willing to change. For people to change-
especially senior executives-to change, there needs to be a good reason.
TQM companies did face challenges, but I believe they could have been resolved by
applying the core principles of TQM, even that meant breaking some other rules laid
down by Deming in an earlier era. For example, when Deming said that it takes five
years of total commitment to implement TQM, he was referring to large
manufacturing firms. Also he was talking about current best practices.
Companies in the 1990s did need faster methods of improvement. Rather than
turning away from TQM principles and using process re-engineering that include
cutting jobs (violating TQM point # 13), the companies could have used best
practices developed within TQM an improved while weathering the storm. Faster
solutions, instead of replacing TQM, could have worked within the TQM framework.
And some companies did just that.
Conclusion
For example, SONY USA still operates with TQM. Motorola and GE evolved from
TQM to Six Sigma without slipping off the quality bandwagon.
Total Quality Management was the first quality management method to transform
entire industry, rather than work at just one company at a time.
I think If companies implement it completely without violating any of the points, it is a
very effective approach of sustaining the Quality & Productivity of an organization.
