I hope the holiday season was enjoyable and not too stressful for you all. I would like to express my gratitude for all your help and support this past year and for your continued support in 2016. Your board worked very hard last year to keep the lodge productive and interesting. I know the new board will be equally dedicated to keeping our meetings interesting and informative. If you have any suggestions for activities, programs for our meetings, please bring them to my attention. This lodge is for you and we want to insure your needs and interests are being addressed. I want to send out a great big “Tusen Takk” to all the members who contribut- ed to the Union Gospel Mission. The Mission was our charity of choice for last year. You donated in excess of 110 pairs of socks, numerous tooth brushes and personal hygiene and clothing items. But, the biggest gift of all was a cash donation of $2015.00. A special kudos must go to the generous member who matched the cash donations of our members. Wow, that is just overwhelming!! With the beginning of a new year, we will be experiencing new opportunities and challenges, the most predominate is our co-hosting the 2016 Sons of Norway International Convention in August. Your Lodge is well represented in the planning process and in Chairing several of the committees. There is an opportunity for all our members to help out. First and foremost, we will need hundreds of dozens of cookies to feed the hungry convention attendees during the coffee breaks. You know how good those home baked cookies taste along with a good cup of coffee. Once again we will co-sponsor Norway Day. This will be our10th Norway Day and it is scheduled for the third Saturday in April. Plans are already un- der way for the event with a full slate of vendors waiting in the wings. The rest of the year offers many opportunities for continued friendship and the making of new friends. I hope you will play an active role in the success of Hovedstad Lodge. Celebrate Founders' Day! Are you ready to show your Sons of Norway pride? January 16th marked Sons of Norway’s Founders Day, a day to celebrate the organizations beginning and acknowledge the contributions made by 18 Norwegian immigrants back in 1895. It’s an amazing thing to see how our organization, which was founded to create a social safety

net for Norwegian immi-grants, has grown into the largest Norwegian cultural organization in the world! While Founders Day is a great day to celebrate Sons of Norway’s past, it’s also an opportunity to celebrate where we’re

headed. With thousands of hours dedicated to our communities and reputation built on strong, dependable financial products, Founders Day is the perfect time to demonstrate your pride in being a part of Sons of Norway! So on January 16th, don’t forget to wear your Sons of Norway pins proudly! And when anyone asks about your mem-bership pin, explain with pride that you belong to Sons of Norway

Til Minne

In addition to the collection of socks and toiletries she recommended a monetary contribution. The discussion was deferred to the Budget discussion.

New Business:

Dan Konopatzke presented his recommendations for the 2016 budget. Dan stated that Norway Day is an income source with an expected profit. District 2 and the International Convention will be an added expense in 2016. Bob Dunn made a motion to ac-cept the budget. Linda Fialkowski seconded the motion. 2016 Recruitment Challenge Are you up for a challenge? For the next year, your lodge is pitted against other lodges from across Sons of Norway to find the ones that best combine their ability to attract new members and bring new ones in. Now in its third year, the 2016 Recruitment Challenge will put your lodge’s skills to the test and it’s up to you to help out. You may be wondering how just one person can make a difference in a year-long contest. It’s easy! Here are three simple ways you can help lead your lodge to glory ! First, it’s important to remember that keeping members is just as important as recruiting new members for your lodge. Keep that in mind if you notice someone has been absent for an extended period of time. Sometimes a friendly phone call or email is a great reminder that everyone is important in the lodge. The second tip is to always be recruiting! There’s a reason for everyone to join Sons of Norway. Do you know someone who loves cooking? The cooking Cultural Skills unit might be just the right incentive to encourage someone to join. Do you know someone who loves traveling? Sons of Norway’s partner-ships with car rental companies, hotels and Borton Overseas can more than offset the cost of member-ship. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with some of the benefits of membership on the Sons of Norway website. The third tip follows up from the second. Try and keep a new member form handy. You never know when you’ll come across someone who is interested in their genealogy or an upcoming lutefisk dinner. Let’s face it: people sometimes forget. Having a membership form on hand is a great way to help some-one join right away rather than hoping they’ll remember later on. What does your lodge get if it wins? $250! That’s right - the top scoring small and large lodges in each district will get $250 to spend on whatever they see fit! The top overall large and small lodges will also appear in an issue of Viking in 2017. Keep your eyes open for more 2016 Recruitment Challenge updates and tips throughout the year. In the meantime, you can find a copy of the complete rules online at www.sonsofnorway.com/challenge.
