The Highland Lakes Herald is the official news medium of the Highland Lakes Condominium Association, serving all residents, groups and organizations.
The Association and its Board of Directors control and are responsible for the contents of the Herald.
The staff of the Highland Lakes Herald serves on a voluntary basis. Editorials reflect the opinions of the staff and are not construed as representative of the general membership of the Association.
The Herald welcomes comments, suggestions and articles from its readers. All material submitted for publication in the Herald must be true, factual, and newsworthy. The editor reserves the right to withhold items from publication pending verification of facts. In some cases where items are of a critical or controversial nature, the editor reserves the right to solicit comments from those with opposing viewpoints.
Materials submitted for publication are to be given to the receptionist in Highland House. All materials submitted must be signed, but signatures will be withheld upon request. Communications to the Herald should be in writing. No material will be accepted for publication in the upcoming issue after the 20th of the month.

BOARD COMMENTSHappy new year! we hope that you had a good Holiday Season.
now it’s time to hit the ground running with an anticipated very busy 2012.
Ice MeltI am reminded on a regular basis that nothing at Highland Lakes is free, and I certainly agree with this
statement.
For example: Ice melt is provided for the residents at the clubhouse to use judiciously during the winter
months. The association spends approximately $18,000 annually on sidewalk salt - averaging $26 per
unit. It has been observed that residents occasionally take large Rubbermaid tubs of ice melt from the
clubhouse for their personal use. We ask that, for the consideration of other co-owners, that residents
PLEASE USE DISCRETION in their use of the sidewalk salt. Empty coffee cans are available at the
clubhouse for your use to transport the ice melt to your unit.
Bylaws VotingAs you know the Amended Bylaws are up for reconsideration until July 31, 2012. We are still about
70 votes short of passing. In Spring, the board will resume aggressively pursing the last outstanding
votes by going door to door. If these amendments fail, it should be on their merit; we would hate for
them to fail due to apathy or lack of participation.
Roofing ProjectRoofing bids have been sent out and will be reviewed by the board on January 10th. The hope is that
Phase Two of our roofing project will start as soon as the snow season is over.

Snow Removal Request FormHandicapped/Disabled List – If you are in need of special attention with snow and ice removal, as a courtesy, the Association maintains a list of those Co-Owners and residents that need this service, forms can be obtained at the Clubhouse office.
You must complete and return the Special Attention Form along with a copy of your handicap sticker that is displayed in your car. (We will make the copy for you.) Anyone with a permanent handicap plate will of course be on the list. However we will still need a completed form on file and we will need to know if this condition is a temporary or permanent condition.
We cannot guarantee that Maintenance will be able to provide this special attention for every snow event; however, we will make every effort to do so.

During the weekend, how much snowfall is required before maintenance will be called in?Answer: 4 inches or more measured in more than three areas on the property.
Why does my court seem to be last during the recent snowfall?Answer: To attempt to bring some semblance of fairness, the starting point of snow removal efforts change each time.
Why does it seem to take so long to clean my parking spaces?Answer: Maintenance depends on the cooperation of the Co-Owners to empty the courts of cars
before plows can safely plow the spaces. The plows cannot fit in between parked cars.
Why did Maintenance leave a small amount of snow on the sidewalk this time?Answer: Leaving a small amount of snow provides traction to more safely walk.
Why does the Association have an adopted snow policy?Answer: (A) To keep our Co-Owners informed of what to expect from the Association
(B) It is required as part of our Risk Management procedures.
How long should it take Maintenance to completely finish snow removal efforts?Answer: 48 hours or less depending on the weather and the amount of snow.
In what order, and when, is snow blowing and plowing handled?Answer: FIRST DAY SECOND DAY
1 – Streets 3 – Main Sidewalks 5 – Approach Walks 7 – Parking Spaces2 – Clubhouse 4 – Centers of Courts 6 – Porches (Only if courts are clear of cars)

Normal SNow EvENtS: • 2-3 inches - Clearing will begin during the snowfall and maintenance will work normal hours following the
established Snow Policy. • 4 inches or more – Maintenance will clear on weekends and at night following the Snow Policy.
largE SNow EvENtS: 6 inches or more - Maintenance will begin clearing main sidewalks and traffic lanes during the snow event. If necessary, they will continue the removal effort until 10:00 p.m. The next morning they will begin a second clearing effort and work until all walks and courts are cleared, or until 8:00 p.m.
SNow EmErgENciES/BlizzardS: More than 10 inches - Efforts will be focused on keeping main roads, traffic lanes and main sidewalks open to emergency traffic only. Once those elements are clear, work will begin on approach sidewalks and courts. Maintenance will work up to 14 hours per day, until the roads, courts and walks are clear. Contractors may be called in if necessary. The priority treatment of the handicapped list will be suspended during these events. Exceptions for emergencies will be handled on a case basis.
ParkiNg SPacES: After the primary snow removal efforts are completed, maintenance will begin clearing parking spaces if cars are out of the court. Management encourages Court Captains to facilitate the removal of cars and contact the Clubhouse to advise when their court is clear and management will then contact maintenance to begin plowing the parking spaces within that court. If maintenance is ready to plow a court, the Association may also contact the court captains to facilitate the movement of parked vehicles.
ovErall goal: The Association shall have the sidewalks, courts (not parking spots), and roads, clear within 48 hours of the cessation of a snow event.
HazardouS coNditioNS: During the winter, the weather conditions favor the potential for slippery sidewalks, porches and roads. Please use due care and caution during this time of the year and keep a supply of ice-melter, which is available at the Clubhouse, at your home for your use.

This was a song that came out near the end of World War II. It expressed the hope and relief that the hostilities were nearing
an end. It came to mind last week – early morning – as I turned onto Ross Fogg Drive. I was somewhat startled as my headlights swung around and revealed two people returning with their Starbucks’s Coffee along the side of the road.
I got to thinking about the importance of lights… all sorts of lights. Car headlights and brake lights and turn signals; Don’t get me started on turn signals – I go back to the days when we had to roll down the window (by cranking – not pushing a button) and stick my arm out – up for right turns and straight out for left – in all kinds of weather.
Now, when someone makes an unexpected and un-signaled turn in front of me, I call it the “duh” syndrome: “It’s obvious I’m turning left – I’m on my way on Seven Mile to Home Depot… Duh!”
And remember, especially on these foggy Michigan mornings, headlights are as much for you to be seen as they are for you to see. Let’s call them running lights - when the engine is running – the lights are on, night and day.
Other lights come to mind – traffic signals. Remember the game we played “Red light – Green light”? The magnificent moonlight we experienced early in December comes to mind.
Finally, those on the back of our units are very important lights – turn them on! This time of year we have more darkness than light. The cold may discourage some mischief making or criminal activities, but lights work even better. The Township police have told us that lights are an important deterrent to such activities. And lights are easy – just a flick of a switch – and they are not expensive. A 60 or 100 watt light costs just pennies a night – pretty cheap security.
Let the lights go on again – all over Highland Lakes!

PARTYThe Adult Christmas
party that was held on Saturday, December
3rd was a tremendous fun! The food and deserts were absolutely delicious, and the Christmas music was
enjoyable. Santa Claus (a.k.a. Joe Sattler) did another super job this year and made sure
everyone left with a present and /or money. We were very happy
to greet new guests this year and hope they enjoyed themselves and will attend more functions offered by
Highland Lakes in the future. Some of our regulars were unable to attend, but we
hope to see them next year. The committee would like to
thank everyone for attending the Adult Christmas
Party, and trust a good time was had by all.

“Being so close to Northville Downs, anyone interested in seeing “Reidio Star”, my three-year old � lly race horse, up against the other top Michigan � llies might enjoy an exciting evening. Northville Downs opens again in January.
“Star” was in a major race in September. Her chances were more than “i� y”. She was up against the top gal horses. As I watched the race unfold, “Star” blazed past me. My friend yelled, “She won!” I yelled “No, no she didn’t.” � e folks behind me in the stands yelled, “Yes! She Won!” I was in shock! Unbelievable!
I’ve been in horse racing since 1970. Be careful! Owning race horses can become an addiction!”

Familiar with this area from living in the Haggerty Road and Eight Mile area years ago, Perry moved into Highland Lakes from Dearborn in August 2011. Now he’s waiting for a full summer season in order to enjoy the pool. A so� ware engineer by trade, Perry plays bass and regular guitar for fun though his band performing days are over, he says.

Diane and her two children, Dane, a Meads Mill student, and Dena in second grade at Silver Springs Elementary, moved into Highland Lakes in October 2011. � is location made it possible for the children to remain in the same schools they attended before moving from a nearby Northville area. Busy with renovating and decorating since the move, Diane also continues to build her home cleaning business, Universal Shine Cleaning. Caring neighbors make Diane feel that her children have other adults looking out for their safety. She hopes that she can contribute to the community by investigating more recycling opportunities for Highland Lakes residents.
Rourk FamilyNorthville residents since 2000, Donna and Greg moved into Highland Lakes recently. � eir son Christian attends Michigan State University; daughter Elizabeth is a student at Northville High School. Donna teaches middle school in Westland while Greg gets the longer commute to Troy for his job. � ey heard good things about Highland Lakes prior to moving here and are sure they’re going to love it, especially in the summer, living across the street from the pool and a lake.

Keeler and her three children, Ethan, Keely, and Sophia love Northville, where they have lived for six years, and, especially, Highland Lakes,
where they have lived since October. Ethan, a sixth grader at Meads Mill, says friends are a short walk away, the view is beautiful, it’s safe in the neighborhood, and the clubhouse parties are awesome. Keely and Sophia, who attend Silver Springs Elementary, are also happy with friends close by. Keeler started her own business, Keeler’s Custom Cleaning, and hopes to spend as much time as possible working within the community as well as enjoying the healthy environment with her children. Four years ago Mark and Shelly moved further west from their home at Eight Mile and Beck to try a more country atmosphere. � ey discovered that attending church, visiting friends, and shopping required frequent trips back to Northville, so they moved back. Shelly describes the downsizing a “delightful experience.” � e friendliness of the court neighbors almost compensates for not having a garage while the renovations and tasteful redecorating inclines them to think this may be their permanent home. � eir happy Labrador, one of many dogs on the court, loves the walk around the lake.
Nowacki FamilyMegan, David, a Detroit � re� ghter, and Honey Child, their Yorkshire- Maltese mix, welcomed a newborn son on October 29, 2011. Baby Nowacki is the fourth generation to live in Highland Lakes. Megan’s parents conveniently live across the court parking lot in a unit previously owned by Megan’s grandfather, Howard Drewitz, an original Highland Lakes owner. � e Nowacki family is already familiar with the amenities of living in the community.

I received an e-mail from resident Joy Gaskin. It concerns a hi-jacking
scheme which has become prevalent as of late. It goes like this: You’re hurrying
out of work or the mall and hop into your car and prepare to take off. You start your vehicle and then check your
mirrors to make sure the path behind you is clear. It is then that you notice that there is a piece of paper attached to the back windshield. At this point, you get out to see what is on the window. Without thinking, you leave the keys in the ignition and the doors unlocked.
this is the moment the car-jackers are awaiting. They jump into your car and head for the hills. If you’ve left your purse or wallet on the seat, so much the better. They now have personal information and may proceed to rob your house, make a quick costly shopping trip on your credit cards, or even steal your identity. The proper thing to do if you are in your vehicle and notice a paper on the back windshield is to stay in the car and investigate the situation later.

The Snow Removal Policy includes free ice-melter which is available at the Clubhouse. Residents have the responsibility to obtain the ice-melter to use in their area when there is snow and/or ice buildup, until the Maintenance Staff reaches the area for snow removal. Please bring a small, sturdy container (paper
bags are not sturdy enough) to the Clubhouse to get your ice-melter. It is available in the bins sitting outside the Clubhouse front and back doors as well as in the tool storage room when the Clubhouse is open.
